In this essay I am going to analyse the movie poster for the film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl’ . This film was released in 2003 directed by Gore Verbinski and it was a huge Box-Office hit and had great reviews . It also made Johnny Depp the superstar he is now and it stars other actors such as Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley . The genre of the film is an action adventure film with lots of other elements in it .
As we can see the main colors used in the poster are Gold and Red which fits with the theme of the movie which is about different pirates . The gold color can refer to golds and jewels that pirates in the movie are after it and the red color can connote to plundering ships and destroying lands which is what this movie is all about .
Starting at the top we can see the name of the main actors starring in the film . Under the name of each actors we can see the picture of them in their characters costumes .This shows that they are the main actors of the movie and they play a huge role in the story . Showing the main actors of the movie in the poster is a great way to attract people to watch the movie as female audience would definetly watch the movie with attractive people like Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom starring in it and it also hint that there would be some romance between Keira Knightley and someone else . The other important thing we can see is that the guy staying in the middle who is played by Johnny Depp is holding a sword and a gun and is wearing a bandana . A true representation of history in film is almost impossible to achieve, this is due to the limitations of source materials the filmmakers who create the films have. In the modern day, photographs and video footage of historical events are available but these resources don’t depict everything which has happened. Emotion and what happens in historical events are two of the main things that these resources do not depict, what happens in event and human emotion can only be experienced by either people who are involved in the historical event or by the person who is being portrayed. Even then the event experienced can be falsely accounted for due to time in terms of memory or quite simply human error. Another main problem with historical depiction in film is that many films, especially Hollywood films, have one main goal, to create profits. This is achieved by the entertainment value of a film, if a film is entertaining an audience will follow, which leads to the film creating revenue. One of the main arguments raised about historical films is that they distort the past. Many Hollywood films have to use certain techniques and convention to ensure that it makes revenue, these conventions lead to filmmakers adding more to history via film such as love interests, more appealing action sequences and changing the look of the events to make them more aesthetically pleasing. Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, not much was known about how to treat mental illnesses. At the time, many doctors felt that an appropriate way to handle such a thing was something known as the “resting cure,” which called for doing little more than “resting” by oneself. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s epistolary short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the main speaker writes of her reclusive treatment for her own mental illness. Throughout the passage, Gilman criticizes the practice of the resting cure by showing the harmful effects of isolation and the reduction of a person to an infantile state.
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman has a tone of a mentally ill women who worsens while under the thumb of her husband who is her doctor first and husband second. She numerously attempts to reveal her true, current state of mind to her husband but he shows that he thinks he knows best. The internal conflict of being better but not being heard leads to her ultimate breakdown and shock to her husband, John. Everyone has experience this type conflict, whether concealed or disclosed to another, of trying to convey your true feelings but not getting the results you need to progress properly. This story is very much peculiar as it is true and trying for those who struggle under various mental stresses.

Women's roles within society have changed drastically throughout history. Today, women assume relative equality in society with men; women have the right to vote, own property, get divorced, and hold the same jobs, among other things. Prior to 1919, however, women were dominated by the largely misogynistic society that existed in the United States; women did not have the right to vote and were not regarded as equal to men in marriage or otherwise (“woman suffrage”). The late nineteenth century in the United States was also a time when society viewed individuals with mental illnesses as “a threat to public safety” (Holtzman). Therefore, “people with mental illness were cared for by family members, who quietly attended to their needs in rural areas” (Holtzman). These are the conditions the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” was living within.
On my first reading of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", I found the short story extremely well done and the author, successful at getting her idea across. Gilman's use of imagery and symbolism only adds to the reality of the nameless main character's sheltered life and slow progression into insanity or some might say, out of insanity.

At the bottom of the page the movie’s title, The Expendables 2, is written in bold red letters and the audience is alerted that the film will premier in theatres on August 17. The other dominant text appears at the top of the poster in white lettering, listing the names of the actors who appear in the movie. The phrase, “Back for War,” is to the left of the main character, letting viewers know this movie is a continuation to the battle introduced by the first movie. Most movie posters include a symbol of some kind. Although there is no specific symbol depicted on the poster, the graphic is full of symbolism. This movie poster is eye-catching, complex, and direct, making it very effective at grabbing the viewer’s attention and drawing them in. Overall, this movie poster includes tons of action, giving the viewer many graphics to focus on; however, if you look close enough, you can see that it has a deeper
“The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman explores the oppression of women in the nineteenth century and the constant limitation of their freedom, which many times led to their confinement. The short story illustrates male superiority and the restriction of a woman’s choice regarding her own life. The author’s diction created a horrific and creepy tone to illustrate the supernatural elements that serve as metaphors to disguise the true meaning of the story. Through the use of imagery, the reader can see that the narrator is living within a social class, so even though the author is trying to create a universal voice for all women that have been similar situations, it is not possible. The symbolism ranges into various depths. Still, the yellow wallpaper itself is the greatest of them all due to the impact it has on the narrator whom is sick because of her obsession with the paper or because the old smell and color and feel of the paper was not something she should be around in the first place. After tearing it all down though, she has freed herself , finally.

Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
Both show a man who is holding a very large gun and looking very intensely at something in the distance. These both could imply that the men on the posters are at war with someone/something that is threatening their lives. In a way, these posters could be glorifying the Vietnam War by having these men portray America surviving the worst. I believe it’s more present with First Blood because of the setting around the main actor. He is in what appears to be a jungle/heavily wooded area. Vietnam was known for its very distinct land and how wooded it was. First Blood and Predator are fairly similar when being grouped by the characteristics I chose, i.e. they both feature a man with a large gun looking intensely into the distance. My third example, RoboCop, was more so affected by the war on drugs and the economic depression in the Rust Belt. RoboCop is set in Detroit, this can be determined by the police badge on the car that has the city’s name on it. This small detail helps the poster’s audience know what the context is and what the movie is about. Detroit was greatly affected by the recession in the 1980’s and it essentially became a
