The Noble Feat of Nike
Globalization is the worldwide integration, development and expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. As people, ideas, knowledge, goods move more easily around the globe, and the experiences of people around the world become more similar. “The Noble Feat of Nike" by Johan Norberg shows us about how over the years, due to globalization around the globe, prominent, progressive and helpful foreign companies like the Nike shoe factory has made it possible for its employees in Vietnam to better their lives. If it was possible for all other third world countries, much growth and modernization would be a constant and overflowing part of everyday life. The author traveled to Vietnam to see the working conditions and the state of mind of the workers in the factories. He comes to the conclusion that these factories in fact have helped the economy over there quite a lot.
Since 1990 after Vietnamese government removal of control over the economy, it has doubled and it has cut poverty in half and helped make Vietnam into a more modernized and progressive country. He also looks into why Nike Company works better overseas, and that is due to worker satisfaction. He comes to a conclusion that the effect of globalization is not necessary a bad thing it helps third country’s quite a lot in the development process in trying to modernize and later maybe possible to compete with the first world country’s for later generations in my thought. As the author puts in “The Noble Feat of Nike” the job comes with a regular wage, which is three times the minimum wage for a state owned enterprise that also comes with free or subsidized meals, free medical services and training and education. In Conclusion I think the third world would benefit a lot more steadily with globalization because it would bring more people out of poverty and help them better their lives with a better salary. If you look at most people in third world country’s they have to rely on family member’s to go to another foreign country with better job prospects to help them out.
The term globalization varies from person to person. A consumer typically associates globalization with a store producing more goods, stocking inventory, and updating their styles, however; an anthropological definition of globalization is, “the worldwide intensification of interactions and increased movement of money, people, goods, and ideas within and across national borders,” (Guest, 19). Globalization of the clothing industry is about the “search of cheap, reliable labor to meet the industry’s tight margins,” (Timmerman 7). Timmerman suggests that globalization change our lives and can be for the good or for the bad (8). Globalization is often viewed as a mutual and beneficial process for those involved, because it is perceived as helping those out who are in poverty get a job and make money for their families.
Our global world is being more connected as we become integrated politically, socially and even economically. Due to the Bretton woods agreement, different countries have been economically dependent on each other in fear for war to erupt. From then on different organizations and policies tied more countries into being economic globalized. This economic globalization had then given us many opportunities in trades and more access to natural resources in other countries. Unfortunately, there are some negative effects that are brought to less developed country. Overall, many people believe that economic globalization does a great work on accumulating our economy and our quality of life.
Globalization is a series of social, economical, technological, cultural, and political changes that promote interdependence and growth. Globalization raises the standard of living in developing countries, spreads technological knowledge, and increases political liberation. (Harris 5-23) The main cause of globalization is influence from other, more developed, countries. Globalization is a historical process that results from human innovation and technological progress. The social effects of globalization are clearly illustrated in Peru. Once a third-world country filled with poverty and oppression, Peru is now transitioning into a developed nation. In Peru, globalization has raised the human development index, empowered women, and created a stronger country. (Leon 90-91)
With globalization moving labor to developing countries became usual practice for big corporations in the 20th century. They use it to cut on the cost of production and workers in the developing country are happy to be able to work and provide for their families. The companies are often vilified for exploiting the workers and providing poor working conditions. In the article “The Noble Feat of Nike,” Johan Norberg shares her research on factory workers in Vietnam and offers their point of view on outsourcing. A young Nike worker, Norberg interviews, explains that the conditions in the factories are far better than in the sunny humid fields. She is satisfied with the wages, and is grateful for the lifestyle she can now afford. Her new income allowed her to buy a car and fix her house, and her son doesn’t have to work instead of going to school, like every middle class family in America.
Globalization helps many people achieve greatness. But for the majority it brings hardships and struggle. People will be plagued by the effects of globalization and will have a tough time over coming it. We are far from reaching a point where we can say we have sustainable prosperity throughout our world. But before we focus in on sustaining prosperity, we must first reach prosperity and bring it to all corners or the earth.
Another area of concern is the discrepancy of differences in East Asian worker regulations and wages compared to the North American standards. Much speculation has gone toward attacking Nike for their blatant disregard of American labour ethics, but Nike is having difficulty explaining their justification of meeting offshore requirements. For example, the legal age in Indonesia was 14, an age at which compulsory Schooling has ended. Nike was criticized for apparently having girls at this age working in their factories (which wasn’t true), and was shunned for inhuman labour practices according to American standards.
The creators of Nike Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman began in 1964, they used be name Blue Ribbon Sports. Little be known an athlete and track coach at University of Oregon would be on their way to create one of the most well known athletic brands today. At first, they began as an athletic Japanese shoe supplier and then eventually became what we know now as Nike. To this day they are the main supplier of athletic clothing, shoes, accessories today! Nike is one of the top sponsors for athletes, to name a few Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant are all phenomenal basketball players. It is interesting and very pleasant to see how people from across the world work together to come up with ideas that make their company the best in what they do. This interconnection among people and places throughout the world which is with increasing level is called globalization. Nike should hold the standards regarding safety and working conditions that are prevailing in that country. Now we live in a world that is constantly evolving, demanding people to use resources in locations that are very difficult to obtain certain resources. This could make it completely impossible to operate in these specific parts of the world. However, globalization allows people across the world to acquire much needed resources.
