What is a poem? According to dictionary.com a poem is, “a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure.” There are guidelines for poets when writing poetry. Above, some of the terms were already mentioned. To outline theme poems can uses rhyme, language, rhythm, form, imagery and meter to create tone and meaning in words. However while meeting these guidelines it still must evoke strong emotions in its readers, even if it is complete confusion. We will take a look at one piece of poetry, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden that utilizes some of these tools to give it meaning and tone.

In the poem, “Those Winter Sundays,” Imagery is a tool used. It is created by visually descriptive of figurative language. This poem is constructed into three stanzas consisting of five lines, then four, and five again. In the first stanza we are made to think of winter.     "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden is a poem about a how the author is recalling how his father would wake up early on Sundays, a day which is usually a reserved as a day of rest by many, to fix a fire for his family. The mood of this poem is a bit sad. It portrays a father, who deeply cares for his family but doesn't seem to show it by emotions, words, or touching. It also describes a home that isn't very warm in feelings as well as the title" Those Winter Sundays" The author describes the father as being a hard worker, in the line "…with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday…", but still even on Sundays--the day of rest, the father works at home to make sure the house is warm for his family. In its simplistic yet conversational tone, the author uses meter to depict the result that nature has forced upon these humans, who are but a small sample size that actually is representative of society that that time. Due to nature, the characters can talk, represented by the conversational meter, and thus, they can bond within the family. A larger representation of this more specific example can be applied to a more general perspective of human’s relationship with the natural world. Although “Snowbound” captures what humans do as a result of nature, it can also represent a larger picture, where nature appears at the most opportune times to enhance relationships from human to human. In “snowbound,” this is symbolized by the fire, “Our warm hearth seemed blazing free” (Whittier 135). This image relays a spirited, warm, mood full of security, which is expertly used by the author to show how fire, a natural phenomena, can provide such beneficial effects on humans.
