My essay is about the speech given by Shakespeare’s lady Macbeth, the speech has a mysterious feel about and therefore reflects Lady Macbeths personality perfectly. I imagine that Shakespeare was trying to show Lady Macbeths dark personality through her speaking rather than acting and that is why the speech has a sinister feel about it. Her speech is about the arrival of her victim, Duncan whom she is planning to kill so that she can get what she wants. Shakespeare was a very talented writer who managed to tell us that Lady Macbeth was drunk with power just by using words.
One of the main features of Lady Macbeths soliloquy is Anthropomorphosis. This is demonstrated in’ The raven himself is hoarse’ which is the first line of her soliloquy. Anthropomorphosis is used to try and help us picture the scene in our mind. Anthropomorphosis is where an animal takes on the quality of a human for example the raven is taking on the human quality of breathlessness. Macbeth's Actions in William Shakespeare's Macbeth As soon as we start to read the play, we learn that Macbeth has earned. himself an honourable reputation, and is described by King Duncan as a valiant cousin. Worthy gentleman. His loyalty and bravery are portrayed through his defeat of the Norwegian army and Scottish rebels, and he returns from battle, a gallant and reputable soldier. The extent of his courage is shown as he is interminably praised by his noblemen, has become a hero of Scotland, and the thane of Cawdor.
Shakespeare’s social commentating is conveyed through the theme of power. This theme is clearly demonstrated through the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. For example, Lady Macbeth’s lust for power can be seen after she reads Macbeth’s letter and says, “Unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top full of direst cruelty; make thick my blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse.” In this quote she is asking to be stripped of her womanhood so that she can perform the deed herself. This quote not only reflects Lady Macbeth’s ambition and her desire to step out of her role to attain power, but also effectively links back to gender in the Jacobean era where woman were restricted to the role of a housewife. After being named Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth is wonders if he can believe the rest of the witches' prophecies, saying “Glamis and Thane of Cawdor/ The greatest is behind,” (1.3.125-126) in other words it’s just what they said, and the best part of what they predicted is coming! To that, Banquo remarks, "oftentimes, to win us to our harm, / the instruments of darkness tell us truths, / Win us with honest trifles, to betrays / In deepest consequence" (1.3.123-126). Banquo is much more cautious, and warns Macbeth to be calmer; that the witches are just trying to trick him. “To win us our harm” is achieved by manipulating Macbeth into doing small things that will all add up to dire consequences- in this case, equivocation.
Shakespeare's Use of Language To Show Macbeth’s State Of Mind In Three Speeches This speech shows Macbeth is living in fear, the snake refers to Macbeth’s state in life, he feels that he has wounded the snake by killing Duncan, but cannot be completely happy until the snake has been killed and Banquo is dead. “Weak Malice” refers to the shameful deeds they have committed to get to the state they are in, which is killing the king whilst he was sleeping. The speech also goes on to Macbeth saying, “Eat our meal in fear”, this is an ironic prediction, as Baquo does return to the meal as a ghost. The phrase, “Let the frame of things disjoint”, means let the universe shatter, and portrays the situation of turmoil he is in.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth tells the story of a general who commits regicide in order to become king. Early in the play, Macbeth is conflicted as to weather or not he wants to kill his kinsman the king. In the first two acts Macbeth is not portrayed as a ruthless killer; he is a sympathetic character who succumbs to the provocation of his wife and a prophecy foretold by three mysterious witches. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative, immoral woman. Her ambition is so strong that she is willing to do anything to see her husband succeed. However, in the third act things begin to change. The death of the king and lord and lady Macbeth’s rise to power catalyze profound transformation in their personalities.
The scene I chose was act 2 scene 2 of Macbeth written by Shakespeare. It was between two characters, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. I played the role of Macbeth. In the scene, Lady Macbeth celebrates her plan being a success. Lady Macbeth waits for Macbeth to come with news that he has killed Duncan. Macbeth announces that he has committed the murder but he is so afraid that he brings the bloody daggers with him and Lady Macbeth takes them from him, to place them with the sleeping guards. Macbeth hears knocking sounds which frightens him so his wife comes to lead him away, they then wash the blood from their hands before they get caught. My character was challenging because I had to understand his emotions and find ways of interpreting that on stage. I chose to perform this act because Shakespeare was able to create tension, build the right atmosphere to show them Macbeth’s reaction to Duncan’s murder but also show the relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. Shakespeare’s use of imagery, dramatic irony, rhetorical questions helped emphasise the guilt Macbeth felt after the murder.

Lady Macbeth's conscience, which seems to have never appeared or mattered to her before, suddenly becomes an uncontrollable part of her psychological state of being.

Lady Macbeth is a vicious and overly ambitious woman, her desire of having something over rules all the moral behaviors that one should follow. On the beginning of the novel, Macbeth receives the news that if Duncan, the current king, passed away he would be the next one to the throne. So, Lady Macbeth induces Macbeth into killing Duncan by filling his mind with ambition and planting cruel seeds into his head. After accomplishing his deed of killing the king, he brings out the daggers that were used during the murder, and says, “I’ll go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done; look on’t again I dare not.” This is his first crime and Macbeth is already filled with guilt and regret. He shows the reader to be the weak one of the duo. Lady Macbeth as the cruel partner still has some sentiment and somewhat a weakness in her heart and mind. When talking about Duncan she says, “Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done’t.” Weakness is still present and will always be there throughout the novel but this one change the fact that Lady Macbeth is still the stronger and cruel one.
