EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Every company had its own way of doing business and mitigating risks. I am most intrigued by Siemens Diagnostics and GE Healthcare. Hence, I will analyze these two successful companies. Siemens Diagnostics operates in the healthcare industry and is located in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland. It provides equipment for immunoassay, hematology, molecular analysis and blood gas testing systems along with automation, informatics and other services. GE Healthcare specializes in medical imaging and information technologies, medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems, drug discovery, biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, performance improvement and performance solutions services that helps their customers to deliver better care to more people around the world at a lower cost. Siemens Diagnostics produces ADVIA Centaur XP( an immunoassay equipment to detect cancer and heart diseases and fertility testing) and ADVIA 2120i(Hematology system to count WBCs and RBCs). The type of industry it is in makes it prone to risks like Long Development Cycles, Long Product Lifecycles, Low Volumes of Production, and Lower Levels of Manufacturing Automation. Its products are complex with multiple interacting parts. Also the type of products that Siemens manufacturers need raw materials that have limited suppliers. GE Healthcare produces imaging agents like Omnipaque, Visipaque and Omniscan in glass and plastic containers of different sizes. The risks faced by them are Rise in IT budgets, limited raw materials and high lead time of a drug. Both the organizations need huge investments in R&D as the quality of their products can affect human safety. They have their own set of initiatives in place to manage risks. Irrespective of how well prepared and organized an organization is there are always chances of sudden issues. The healthcare organization will thus base its operations on the core competences and functions to improve its financial outlook and service delivery. These core competencies include; designing and implementing patient-centered, economic value, the patient experience, safety, and clinically integrated models of care that optimize quality. Intelligent management of laboratory information during the pre-analytic and post-analytic aspects of laboratory testing can help improve clinical care. For example, during the pre-analytic phase, a clinical decision support laboratory knowledge base could be interfaced so that at the time of test ordering, the expert system incorporates patient information, previous test results, and clinician input to suggest appropriate tests, test frequency, and interpretative criteria. At the time of test ordering, the system could also automatically display to the clinician previous test results, pending related orders, and recommended tests based on inputs, which may lead the clinician to either cancel a duplicative test or decide an alternative test is more appropriate (Sepulveda & Young, 2013). This is not what we found at UAB, as the lab staff voiced one of the most common issues they experienced was the fact that multiple authorized users are allowed to order the same lab test for a patient at around the same time. For example, a patient may have 4 CBCs ordered, one every hour from 1 AM to 4 AM. While there are certain medical conditions in which this type and frequency of testing would be clinically appropriate, those are few and far between, and most testing done this frequently is carried out

Point-of-care testing (POCT) can be defined as clinical laboratory testing that is carried out close to the site of patient care. POCT caters for the sector of users that require fast results from patient samples that would otherwise be sent to a dedicated remote laboratory (Willmott and Arrowsmith, 2010). According to Junker et al. (2010), a range of tests including blood glucose measurement, blood gases and electrolytes, urea, creatinine, troponin, bilirubin, and coagulation testing can be carried out by POCT. Junker et al. (2010), state that the main uses of POCT devices are in hospitals and medical practices, however, they are also used in other areas for example in operating theatres and intensive care wards, house visits, and the military. Although rapid, results obtained on POCT devices may differ from those obtained in a core laboratory, especially as POCT is typically performed by non-laboratory staff who may have limited technical knowledge and appreciation of quality issues. To ensure an accurate result, it is therefore important that a good quality system is in place to ensure the test is performed correctly and the equipment is adequately maintained. The diversity and evolution of technologies in the POCT field have improved dramatically over recent years and this change has been mirrored by user demands. The user will need to consider the service they can provide to the patient whilst also operating within financial constraints. POCT is known to be more expensive than laboratory testing.
