After reading Trailblazing by Eric Anderson I was blown away by the story told in the book. It is a story of self-realization, persecution, and perseverance. At first it was hard to believe that this was the same person I see in lecture twice a week. It shows the fears and terrors that closeted homosexuals go through to keep their secret, then the oppression they face after coming out. It has truly opened my eyes to the hardships gay people face when wanting to do no more than be themselves but can't for fear of being abandoned by loved ones and ridiculed by others. Not only must the author deal with discrimination, but his team of high school track runners face being taunted, threatened, and even physically assaulted by their peers. They have to put up with just as much harassment as Anderson himself. Even though none of the athletes claim to be gay they are endlessly hazed for being a "fag team." Through all the conflicts the team remains loyal and stands by their coach. They not only compete as a team but also deal with oppression as a team. Trailblazing is a very moving piece about heroism and is inspiring for people of all sexualities.
In the beginning of the story Anderson describes going through most of his childhood knowing he is gay, though at the time did not know exactly what that meant. Many points brought up in class are evident in the story. How he was forced to act like all the other boys because of how society felt about gays. Forcing himself to act "straight" and pretending to be attracted to women he becomes sucked into this highly hegemonic society. Guys have to be big, bad, and tough, and if they aren't they are
labeled "faggots" or "fairy boys." You can feel the awkwardness of Anderson as he talks about how he acted compared to what he actually felt.
In the beginning of his career as a track coach Anderson continues to keep his secret from everyone. Constantly making excuses for not dating girls, that where socially acceptable. Filling his time with work and studies at first as a smokescreen for his sexuality. He then aspires to become more educated and to become a health teacher.
A gay person in sports is still a big issue in this country, especially when the person is a coach of younger kids.
Andrews begins his narrative by comparing the outlooks upon being transgender to a more normal stance or as his girlfriend (who is bisexual) put it “‘Why can’t you just be gay?’” “‘Why can’t you be normal?’” Being transgender was still a fairly new concept at the time whereas being gay or bisexual was more widely accepted. He affirms the outlook upon being transgender by means of a quote from his current girlfriend “‘Why do you have to mess with this whole transgender thing?’” He

Frank Wheeler yearns to appear mysterious, intelligent, and manly, causing him to gloss over his true identity and lose touch with himself. In his youth, he dreams of riding the railroad, going so far as to plan different routes for his trip on a railroad map. He rehearses how he will act, talk, and interact with other people and buys outfits from an Army and Navy Store that perfectly convey a rugged image. Frank conceals the signs of his true self—Boy Scout emblems and the immaturity of adolescence—in exchange for this foreign identity. Others knock him down because they doubt he will play the role well, but from that point onward, Frank aims to become a man. His life in New York City reflects this goal: Frank, a war veteran, shares a one-room apartment with his friends which he uses with the girls he brings home. With increasi...
In the sports world, homosexual athletes are often forced to hide their sexual orientation and to keep it as a private matter. This is mainly due to the hegemonic masculinity associated with playing sports. Homosexuality is considered the direct opposite of this and therefore is not associated with sports. Also the way athletes talk to each other in the locker room makes it more difficult for gay athletes to come out. Guys jokingly call each other homophobic slurs or pump their chest by talking about women to express their masculinity. Female athletes, unlike their male counterparts, are considered to be more free to talk about their sexual orientation. But, there still exists the misconception that women who participate in sports are assumed to be gay. In college and professional men’s sports it is beginning to become more common for athletes to be more open to talking publically about their sexual orientation. This brings up the question as to whether or not things are changing in our society so that the acceptance of gay athletes will be more common. More acceptance by our overall society as a whole will lead to more gay athletes – both male and female – feeling free to step forward and be open about their sexual orientation.
In this lifetime, society has very pragmatic views. This makes it difficult to feel normal if you are considered different. You may be viewed as an outcast, which can make growing up harder than it already is. The idea of self-concealment is a sexual lesson that ones’ survival depends on.(Sullivan) Sullivan speaks of his own experience as a child, opening up with a story of an un-willful desire for a boy unchanging in front of him in the locker room. Sullivan states, “ He learns that that which would most give him meaning is most likely to destroy him in the eyes of others; that the condition of his friendships in the subjugation of himself”. This demonstrates why a homosexual may be deceitful and contained. Being young is a time to explore, understand ones’ self, and be open about your true personality. I believe the authors’ views because I see it daily .With these conflicts, a child may miss out on the carelessness of youth which is natural to experience before ...

A clack of Tiny Sparks Remembrance of a Gay Boyhood by Bernard cooper is about a man, who talks about his childhood. He talks about how everyone thought he was gay, and how he noticed boys differently then girls. He explained growing up, trying to figure out his identity and knowing he was different. In the story he talks about both a boy and girl in his class and how they are both amazing, but he sees the boy differently then the girl. He mentions aspects of how the girl is so perfect, and how she always has a book in her hand but when he talks about the boy, it’s when he takes off his shirt. He also talks about how he brought up the derogatory word for gay to his mom and asked her what it meant because someone had called him that. She got upset and asked if someone called him that and he lies telling her that they called another young boy the name. At the end of the article he talks about he came out and he now has lived with another man for seven years. He mentions the only thing he regrets
The topic of homosexuality has become a constant issue throughout our society for many years. Many people believe that being gay is not acceptable for both religious and moral reasons. Because being gay is not accepted, many homosexuals may feel shame or guilt because of the way they live their everyday lives. This in turn can affect how the person chooses to live their life and it can also affect who the person would like to become. Growing up, David Sedaris struggled to find the common ground between being gay as well as being a normal teenager. He often resorted to the conclusion that you could not be both. Sedaris allows us to see things through his young eyes with his personable short story "I Like Guys". Throughout his short story, Sedaris illustrates to the reader what it was like growing up being gay as well as how the complexities of being gay, and the topic of sexuality controlled his lifestyle daily. He emphasizes the shame he once felt for being gay and how that shame has framed him into the person he has become.
I’ve been sitting here thinking about the question if this story can be compared to other stories I’ve read. But to tell you the truth the last story I’ve read is The Fault in our Stars. Otherwise I’m reading autobiography’s, such as Binge. This book was amazing because he came out of the closet, after being bullied. I can relate to that book because I too was bullied and it hurts a lot.
Her ideas challenged my previous opinion in that I believed that in order for a transgender athlete to play for their non-biological sex was solely to undergo a complete sex. Prior to researching this topic, I was unaware of other methods such as hormone therapy that were available to transgender athletes. Through Castillo’s informative article, I was able to understand that other options are available in order to maintain the fairness and equality throughout athletics. While Castillo argues that transgender athletes must complete at least one year of hormone therapy, Canadian Blogger, Keph Senett, argues otherwise. In her essay, “Where Do Transgender Athletes Fit Into Sports?” which was published in newsletter Matador Network, Senett argues that transgender athletes must complete a full sex change before even considering competing for the opposite sex. Senett’s article did not add much more to my original opinion, nor did it challenge it in any
During my time as a student at Case Western, I assisted and helped start a group known as Athletes and Allies. This group focused on promoting inclusiveness and understanding throughout the athletic community, as well as programs to assist any athlete having difficulty coming out or discussing issues faced in the Case community. The volleyball program is the only team trained in understanding and inclusivity, or “safe zone” trained. In the future, we hope to provide more safe zone training to all teams, as well as more programs and opportunities to the LGBT athlete community. As a physician, I yearn to advocate for the LGBT community just as I did at Case, and provide a source of relief and understanding for LGBT
There are many repercussions that are projected upon both men and women when they enter into a sport that typically isn’t thought of as gender appropriate. Some of those cultural and social stigmatisms may be abandonment by your peers, and friends questions regarding your sexuality, and even in some cases criticism as to how you are living your life. In some cases, it may lead to you not being accepted by either group, theone whose norems you are not following, of as well as the one with whom you are trying to get involved. This paper will address all of these issues and how these seemingly negative situations can, will, and are, leading to growth. It will also discuss how this is a situation where repercussions are not just in the sports arena, but is prevalent in everyday life, in areas far beyond that of sport.
An amazing accomplishment happened on June 26, 2015 when marriage equality was legalized across the nation. Hearing this exciting news, I quickly celebrated, for I have urged for equal rights for all queer bodies (LGBT plus communities, minority races, and female bodies), which is my sole passion. I had first developed a strong opinion and passion about queer theory when I joined the debate team in 2012 and started debating over the topic; however, last year was the year I intensely debate this topic. It is amazing how far we’ve come to making progress in the queer movement: the movement that encompasses all minority bodies to end the depravity in society. Yet, it is also amazing how far we have to go to ensure true equality.
In this paper, the writer will evaluate the planning function of management within Arthur Andersen. Specifically, the paper will discuss at least one legal, ethical, and social responsibility issue that impacts Arthur Andersen. Additionally, this paper will analyze the impact these factors have on Arthur Andersen’s management planning. Finally, this paper will analyze at least three factors that influence Arthur Andersen’s strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning.
During football and middle school he became best friends with Austin. By this time Andy recognizes his interest in boys and believes the ideal relationship would be with your best friend. The more they became closer as friends, the intimate relationship between them grew. Although Andy enjoyed this relationship, Austin denied the intimacy be stating that he would visualize a female. When Austin began to sleep with his girlfriend Andy felt betrayed and knew then that he was indeed gay. Andy stated “The guy I fell for let me down; he switched over to the straight side and tried to drag me over with him” (Garrod, 2012, p. 197). At this moment in Andy’s life, he began to piece together his identity. The rejection of Austin realized he was not into women and would not change himself like
