I am studying at Auckland International College (AIC), whose students come from many countries in the world, such as New Zealand, South Africa, America, Russian, China, Korea, etc. In this aspect, I believe that this life is similar to life at university because I, as well, have to communicate with people who have different nationalities and speak different languages. Nationality and language are factors that usually prevent a student from assimilating into a new environment. However, I think the experience at AIC can help me overcome these obstacles; and I, in turn, will support other international students. This is the way that I will contribute to life at Rice.

College is a different experience than high school. A large difference between high school and college is the people you will meet while attending college. An interesting group you will meet in college are international students. These international students come from all over the world and have their own unique story to tell. For my project I interviewed Jholdi Brooks, a native of the Dominican Republic, who has spent half his life in the Dominican and the other half in the United States.
The first cultural immersion activity that I participated in was going to St. Charles Catholic Church on Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014). I had a friend who was catholic attend the church with me so I would have a better understanding of what to do and not stand out so much. In addition, I asked my friend to attend with me so I would not do anything in church that was disrespectful. Before going to the church, I thought that I would have to dress up in dress clothes but my friend told me that it is not necessary to dress up for a catholic church, which surprised me. When we first got there, my friend used the holy water and kneeled before entering the pew. I did not do these things because I felt like I would mess up and it would be disrespectful to the religion to mess up those things. Another thing I noticed was when everyone was entering after they have found their seats they would kneel and pray. Later I asked my friend what everyone was doing and she said it was praying to catch up and talk to God about things that has happened since the last time you talked to him.

In the last few years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice for higher education among international students (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). An average of 10% of students in universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world. (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student, there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the common problems faced by international students in the UK, offer solutions for handling the problems, and making the process of acclimating to a new environment easier for students.
Coming to the United States for college can introduce cultural differences that even the most prepared students might not anticipate. From campus life to classroom etiquette, US school can be quite a different experience from learning in other countries around the world. It is rather natural for students from other countries to join communities that somehow remind them of home and give them the opportunity to remain connected with their roots and at the same time bring the world a little closer to fellow classmates.
