In the course of our lives, many of us, for the most part have committed some sort of mistake or wrong doing. These mistakes can be small, others not so much. Sometimes our mistakes have consequences that will come after them, leading to the conclusion of learning from our mistake. However, from a religious perspective, mistakes are either made up by repentance or a penance. The penance part is a sort of punishment in order to make up for the wrong doing you have committed. I, being Catholic, a form of penance have been familiar to me, since a very small age. The penance given to the man in “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is in fact credibly harsh. First there is the story of The Mariner and the wedding guest, then The Mariner telling his own tale to the wedding guest about his voyage. The reader has a limited amount of information regarding the thoughts of both characters and is only receiving information from The Mariner.

As the ancient Mariner described his adventures at sea to the Wedding-Guest, the Guest became saddened because he identified his own selfish ways with those of the Mariner. The mariner told the Guest that he and his ship-mates were lucky because at the beginning of their voyage they had good weather. The mariner only saw what was on the surface -- he did not see the good weather as evidence that Someone was guiding them. Also, when he shot the Albatross, the Mariner did not have any reason for doing so.
