Amish lifestyle is a very strict and limited lifestyle in which the Amish people choose to live a life that is very sheltered from the outside world. They have very limited electronic access and do not drive typical cars that most Americans drive. They all live basically with the same goals and family values. The male works and brings home the supplies necessary for living while the female is tasked with raising the family and providing meals and household duties. Amish families are typically very large and in many ways, they do practice many of the same activities non-Amish people do. They go to church, they have schools at least for a period of the children’s lives, they hang out, they spend time with their families, and they even play sports. However, they are very more strict and serious with their values and try to limit, as much as possible, their communication with the outside world because it is said to be a bad influence and leads the Amish people to the devil.

Author Scott Zesch found out that one of his ancestors who is his great-uncle Adolph Korn had been captured by the Indians in the Texas Hill Country in 1870. Zesch became more interested and determined to find out more about his past ancestor Adolph Korn. Trying to understand more about the captive life as Zesch does further research into the topic. Along with the story of Korn, Zesch tells the tales of other child captives who became "Indianized" Herman Lehmann, Dot, Banc Babb, Clinton, and Jeff Smith. The children were captured by mostly Comanche and Apache Indians between the ages of about seven to fourteen, and held captive between months, years and most of the time forever.
Lives for Native Americans on reservations have never quite been easy. There are many struggles that most outsiders are completely oblivious about. In her book The Roundhouse, Louise Erdrich brings those problems to light. She gives her readers a feel of what it is like to be Native American by illustrating the struggles through the life of Joe, a 13-year-old Native American boy living on a North Dakota reservation. This book explores an avenue of advocacy against social injustices. The most observable plight Joe suffers is figuring out how to deal with the injustice acted against his mother, which has caused strife within his entire family and within himself.
Monday morning, Sally, a twelve-year-old American girl, is woken up by her father. As she gets ready to go to school, her mother hands her a backpack and lunch with a quick kiss goodbye. Meanwhile, Zarina, a twelve-year-old Sierra Leone girl, wakes herself up to get ready for work. Her aunt says good morning as they both head from their home to the cassava fields. Both of these girls have a traditional family setting. In America children in a traditional family grow up with both biological parents and any siblings they have. In Sierra Leone, the setting for both The Bite of the Mango and A Long Way Gone, children of traditional families live with aunts and uncles as well as many children from different parents. These different views of what is traditional create uniqe children in many ways. Children who grow up in Sierra Leone are more self-reliant than American children.
“Visualize Child Protective Services (CPS) walking up to your home to take your children away from you. Now picture this, picture what the children feel like escorted away from their parents left to wonder where they will end up.” Says Larry in the beginning of our interview. “Many children experience these thoughts as they walk out the front door of what they call home.” What can we do to ease the anxiety of these young children taken away from parents? Kinship care is one viable option that can ease the worry for children. However, kinship care is not the only placement for children who are taken away from their homes. Other out-of-home placements include group homes, residential treatments, private child welfare institutions, shelters, and even correctional facilities. “Children need a stable and healthy environment” says Larry the Vietnam Veteran. Kinship care is safe and can help many children by preparing them for a successful future. In this essay, I will have two main sections interviewing a Veteran friend of mine named Larry Pearson, whom served in the Vietnam War. The first section of this essay will be titled “Crabs”, which will discuss how all things came together in Larry’s life just as the critters all came together in the home in Mexico in the book “Tropic of Orange.” Many people made their way to the plot, just as many people were placed in Larry’s life, and this has played a major part in my life as well. On March 23, 1998, I carried out an interview and field observation to confirm a previous hypothesis on Amish social change and survival. I hypothesized, based on library research and personal experience, that Amish society was not static but dynamic and affected by many factors such as economics and cultural survival. In order to check the validity of my hypothesis I arranged to spend a full Sunday (March 23, 1998), with an Amish family. I attended church services at the Westhaven Amish-Mennonite Church in New Holland, Pennsylvania, and afterward spent the day observing and interviewing with an Amish dairy farmer named Aaron and his wife Anna. They have six children and live on a dairy farm in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, which is a large farming community. I met Aaron and his family roughly four years ago while in Lancaster County with my family and since then our families have remained in close contact. Thus, to do an ethnography on the Amish, my primary informant was Aaron, someone I was already comfortable speaking with.
Our spirits Don’t Speak English: Indian Boarding school is an 80 minute documentary that details the mental and physical abuse that the Native Americans endured during the Indian Boarding school experience from the mid 19th to the mid 20th century. In the beginning going to school for Indian children meant listening to stories told by tribal elders, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and storytellers. These tales past down from generation to generation were metaphors for the life experience and their relationships to plants and animals. Native children from birth were also taught that their appearance is a representation of pure thoughts and spiritual status of an individual.
Unequal Childhoods overall is a great book with many strengths and very few weaknesses. Lareau’s book has much depth because she was with these families morning, day, and night, and observed the each family’s daily routine firsthand. It is very impressive that she was able to conduct the study by observing these families so closely but never directly getting involved with what was going on. Lareau would sometimes interview the families’ and record their answers so accurately because it was crucial to the study to get every word they were

Around this time, New York nuns brought in 40 Irish orphans to one mining camp in Arizona to stay with Catholic families in the locality a move that was not kindly received by the rest of the Anglos. The underlying perception at the time in Arizona was that Anglos could not mingle freely with any immigrants as they were considered people of colour an understanding that raised racial discrimination to great heights in all operations within the community . The Great American Orphan Abduction is a compelling story that exploits economic, religious, racial, and gender issues in the early 20th century. It follows the story of forty Irish-Catholic orphans from New York being adopted by Mexicans in a small Arizona mining town. These children were considered ulcers to society in the city and were mostly children whose parents were too poor to care for them. The Foundling had visions of a better future for the children out in Arizona. Orphan trains transported the children West and were facilitated by their Catholic nun caretakers. Both racial and gender factors led to posses kidnapping the children from their new homes. The Anglo townspeople did not like the idea of white children being placed in non-white homes. The Arizona Territorial Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Anglos in the trial that followed. Their reasoning was that allowing white children to be adopted by Mexicans was equal to child abuse. Gordon’s analysis shows that women were not as passive in public affairs as some would assume. Mexican women adopted the children, and Anglo women had a hand in the kidnapping and mob activity. There are kids hesitant to watch the fireworks because of fear. They fear the darkness at night, loud noises, and large crowds with people they don’t know. For some kids, fear has a negative impression and long term effect psychologically. They try hard to avoid and escape from the situation. Not every kid is lucky enough to escape from their fears. Much worse than the holiday trauma, there are many children in the African Ivory Coast, who suffer from diseases, hunger, poverty, and rape. In that environment, many kids had to go through fear and violence. When children cannot escape from their fear, they can be easily brainwashed by other people. The book, A Long Way Gone (2007) the story is about how Ishmael goes through the civil war and finally heals his psychological trauma at a UNICEF relief station.
The story begins with a young boy, who we come to find named, Reza, remembering that just a few days before he had overheard his mother and father arguing. But they weren’t arguing about your everyday things, they were arguing about sending one of their children to an orphanage, so that they would have “one less mouth to feed” (295). According to the parents, Reza was the most misbehaved of all of their children, so it made most sense to send him away. Once Reza realized that his parents were planning on sending him away, he went back to bed, crying.

They do not believe in modern conveniences such as automobiles, electricity, and any other modern technology. “The Amish are also known as the “plain people” because they tend to separate themselves from the modern world” (Rearick, 2003).
