American Citizens Should Learn English On February 2009, The English Language Unity Act was introduced. This act would make english the official language of the U.S. What does that mean? It means that every service given by the government will only be given in english. So what's going to happen to all the people that don't know how to speak English? How are they going to understand? Well the only way is to force them to learn english. How can we do that? We can do this by showing them the benefits of knowing how to speak english. First, one benefit of knowing english can be financial success. For example, knowing how to speak english can help increase the changes of getting a good paying job says, Havovi Copper from “Immigrants Should Learn English”. Evidence given by U.S English, Inc that supports this, is a studied done by the Census that shows that income of the people that learned English increased about 30%. Another example is that people that know english have higher possibilities of saving money. How? They can get their citizenship and stop paying ever 10 years for their Permanent residency card. They can also understand when the government gives financial help, for example, with health care and food stamps. Another benefit can be socially/politically. For example, knowing english can help communicate with other people. Being able to speak english would help feel more comfortable around other people. Giving the opportunity of making new friends. Also B. Miller from “What Are the Benefits of Learning English?”says that many websites are mainly available in only English, and anyone that doesn't know to read english would have a problem in understanding it. In “Immigrants Should Learn English” Havovi Cooper says, “Immigrants are also particularly vulnerable in a new environment, so it’s even more important for them to know english before choosing the U.S. as their homeland so they can be well-versed in their rights and the laws protecting them.” A third benefit can be entertainment. You might be asking yourself why entertainment? Well many movies and TV programs produced in Hollywood are in english; to be able to understand what the movie is about it is necessary to know english. Also some movies and T.V programs produce in other countries are sold to the U.S and have subtitles that can be easily read in english. Another benefit can be cultural. Understanding english can help people from other countries understand the U.
Exposing children to different cultures is necessary, and our culture needs to face that soon. It is proven that foreign language study can create more positive attitudes and less prejudice toward different cultures, which shows just how important foreign language really is (Latimer). Additionally, international travel is made a lot simpler (Latimer). Not to mention, speaking a foreign language can help to save money and improve a person's overall experience during their travels. Plus, foreign language can lead to appreciation of cultural diversity, which is much needed in
Language is part of the few benefits that immigrants bring with their culture. United States benefits from cultures of the many immigrants that migrate to the U.S. the variation of different languages brings great benefit to the U.
What is the official language or the United States? 90% of the people would answer English, but guess again. The United States doesn’t have an official language. The subject of English as the official language of the United States has been covered intensively by the world press over the past decade. Declaring it the official language of United States can make an improvement in many areas, and is very relevant for future generations. Even though English-only movement has close connections to restrictionist and anti-immigration organizations. Which suggests that the movement has a wider, more far-reaching, and more negative agenda than simply advocating an official English language policy. English should be the official language of United States because making it the official language of the United States refers solely to the language of the government, not of the people, private business, classrooms, etc., and in 1990 US census reported that 97.1% of the US population speak English.
English as the official language of the United States could benefit the U.S. Government and America as a whole. America has long since been a multicultural nation and has been an English speaking nation since it was founded. The constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which furthers the American people, believing English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, for English has always provided a much needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since it was founded.
These people will not be able to rise in their employment level and will be stuck working only with their fellow immigrants. They will have to find a person who can translate their language to others and get the services, such as medical assistance, they need, very much complicating all they do. Immigrants who have learned the English language have more respect in society. They get higher positions in jobs quickly, depending on their knowledge and also they can work as language translators for other immigrants who don’t speak English. This could actually be a job category with growth. Knowing English helps immigrants feel less isolated from their new community of English-speakers. They are able to socialize, make purchases, and function daily with their neighbors, their teachers, and their colleagues at
The government implementing English as the official legal language of America is imperative because a conformity of communication within our borders is needed to unify the vast diversity. Our mighty country was founded on providing all citizens with equality including inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The United States is a progressive nation that welcomes people from far and wide to come and savor the God-given freedoms enjoyed by all. With all of the diversity from the countless immigrants coming in to our port cities, looking for a more prosperous future, a necessary tie is needed to bring the people of the nation together. Interaction with others --communicating-- is what gets everyone through their days and is essential to living. Without communication between people daily, the lack of communication would bring consequences throughout the world. Transactions among businesses would not be completed, sharing a story with a friend would never happen, the difficulty of understanding a problem of a neighbor, all of these and other necessities in daily life would never happen. The country, which we as citizens have created, needs to implement conformity among ethnicities to lessen the large variances of society to unite the entire nation.
Overall, learning a foreign language is unnecessary in today’s world. With English dominating the business industry and translators available, learning one is a waste of time and resources. Also, other countries can learn English since such a large amount of our population already knows it. Even though there may be multiple people around the world who disagree, they cannot deny the facts. Foreign languages in today’s world are practically useless, let alone a complete waste of
Foreign language skills could have a positive impact on race relations in America. The number of minorities in America is rapidly increasing. In fact, "minority" groups will soon form a collective "majority" of the citizens in America. Considering the facts that many minority groups speak English as a second language and America has no official language, compulsory foreign language classes are viable options. Of course, opponents of mandatory foreign language courses will say that immigrants and naturalized citizens should learn and speak the "de facto" official language of the United States--English. It is a valid point, but misses the bigger picture. People who speak English as a second language are already bilingual, while American-born students typically are not. Language is the most fundamental aspect of a culture. Students who learn the not-so-foreign language of the predominant minority group in their region of the country will gain at least some insight into the different culture of their neighbors and perhaps have a better understanding of them at the personal level. If we take these bits of insight and understanding and couple them with compassion, fertile ground for multicultural harmony in America will be sown. While foreign language skills can improve domestic affairs, the same can be said of foreign affairs.
Firstly, having opportunities to learn new languages are one of many benefits from relationships between people from different countries. Most countries have their own language, so it is essential to learn another language in order to build relationships with people from other countries. For example, I only know how to speak Vietnamese before coming to United States. However knowing that I need to establish new relationships when I come to United States, I must learn English. Knowing English has benefited me greatly because I am able to communicate with other people at school. More importantly, I have more advantages and opportunities when applying for jobs by knowing more than one language.
To start off, learning foreign languages is an advantage to the children’s future career path. Being able to speak in foreign languages will definitely be a handy skill for children when they grow up. The worlds does not only consist of English speakers, we often need to communicate with people who do not speak the same languages as we do. Companies, especially international enterprises, will more likely employ candidates who speak many languages fluently. It will be an advantage for children if they start learning foreign languages at their childhood. It is also unrealistic for people to use their laptops or
As a final point, some may say “So what if you understand English? It just proves that you understand two language, it does not just automatically generate money just because you understand two languages”. It may be true that just by knowing two different languages will not automatically generate money, but by knowing two different language it will definitely increase the chance of finding a better job than those who can only speak one. Lets just say one knows only one language, that mean he/she can only expand their career in one place, but if you understand a useful language such as English, than it will expand your chances and opportunities into seventy five other countries besides America. At last, learning English will only bring benefits into one’s life and minimize the cons of knowing two languages.
Knowing English constitutes an advantage in the contemporary world. Modern Age made communities and nations come closer through advanced communication channels, and today world communities are largely integrated. English had become a part of daily lives of many people through media and globalization. Bilingualism could be good for people who speak English as a second language. Since English is widely used in the international business, one who speaks English will have competitive advantage over others when seeking an international job.
English is, almost certainly, the most important subject that a child can learn in school. Without knowing proper English, a child will not be able to communicate effectively with the English speaking nation. They would be shut off from education and other people in this country. A person who does not poses proper English limits his or her ability to achieve their highest potential. Knowledge of the English language is important to learn to be able to communicate with others, in the teaching of immigrant students, and in finding and maintaining a job.
First group is personal benefits. Learning foreign language, people develop their brain`s capabilities, in particular your memory. The researchers from University College London has shown that learning other languages altered grey matter – the area of the brain which processes information – in the same way exercise builds muscles.() Moreover, people who are learning foreign languages develop self-confidence. Multilingual people tend to attract people because of their skills. You can overcome your fears and doubts, become more intelligent, meet new interesting people and travel to places you would have never dared to visit before.
Also English is the language that consociate the whole World (Pike, 2013). It is important to learn English for being a global citizen - a person that can live anywhere, thrive anywhere, and speak to anyone (Pike, 2013), the more people learn English, the more people can approach to the World. That means different countries can exchange their idea, knowledge and technology by using English. English lead our country to be more developed and wealthy.
