When choosing a famous culinarian I probably should have chosen someone a bit more famous like Paula Deen, Gordon Ramsey, or Anthony Bourdain; (at least that way I would have a plethora of bios, summaries, and different multi medias to work with) who mind you are all amazing chefs and have made great names for themselves. But they are all “cookie cutter” chefs. They each have amazing talent and great TV personalities. But what have any of them done to enhance our industry? what have they done to revitalize a dieing breed? The only thing any of them have done is enhance their own bank accounts and pawn off basic knowledge that should have been passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately in our fast paced culture no one has time or energy to do anything more than watch people cook on TV and re-heat pre made dishes that have been so processed im not sure they are anything but flavored calories. Its a sad brave new world we live in, which brings me to the main topic of this essay: Alice Waters. I doubt many of you have ever heard of her. She is most famous for her restaurant in my home town of Berkeley California, called Chez Panisse. The restaurant menu changes daily based on whats in season and available. Unfortunately before I can get into all the juicy fun facts about Alice (like how drunk she and mom would get at the bar) Ill have to give you a quick dry briefing on who what where when and why our heroine exists. Alice Waters, born April 28th 1944, chef, author, and the proprietor of Chez Panisse, she is an American pioneer of a culinary philosophy that maintains that cooking should be based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainable and locally. She is an advocate for a food ec... ... middle of paper ... ...s so clinical and "normal" it really almost pushed me away from the culinary field completely. But Alice with her self sustaining restaurant, friends and family based meals. Taking what the community had to offer and giving right back tenfold! thats what being a chef is. Being a chef really has nothing to do with how efficiently you can butcher half a cow, how perfect your battonet slice is or how aromatic and golden your basic stock is. Being a chef is being a community leader/activist. Not raping your neighbors for profit or burning out the land to keep produce costs at a profitable margin. Alice waters may not have her own show on food network. she may not be renowned for inventing some new souffle. I also like how Alice Waters created the Edible Schoolyard Project because I think that it is great for children to have hands on experience with growing their own fruits and vegetables and then learning how to cook with what they have grown. I wish when I was in elementary school there was a program that allowed students to plant and grow our own fruits and vegetables because it would I have taught us about eating healthy at a young age. Even though they didn’t have a program like the Edible Schoolyard Program when I was in school I feel that I eat healthy because I was taught by my parents what was healthy for you and what was
... Nestle’s quote, Bittman makes his editorial plea to ethos, by proposing proof that a woman of reliable mental power of this issue come to an agreement with Bittman's thesis statement. Bittman also develops pathos in this article because he grabs a widely held matter that to many individuals is elaborate with: "...giving them the gift of appreciating the pleasures of nourishing one another and enjoying that nourishment together.” (Mark Bittman) Bittman gives the reader the actions to think about the last time they had a family dinner and further imposes how these family dinners are altogether important for family time. Therefore, Bittman did a magnificent job in pointing into the morals of his targeted audience and developing a critical point of view about fast food to his intended audience leaving them with a thought on less fast food and more home prepared meals.
“You know, nobody can ever cook as good as your mama.” These words were spoken by one of the most iconic Southern chefs of all time, Paula Deen. Not only has she formed a legacy with her countless cookbooks, magazines, and television programs, Deen also helps out by donating her wealth and continuing to fight poverty with foundations such as The Bag Lady Foundation. With Paula’s doll-blue eyes, down-to-earth cooking styles, strong love for her close-knit family, and recent controversies, Ms. Deen has undoubtedly become one of the best known chefs in this current generation.

Alice Walker, one of the best-known and most highly respected writers in the US, was born in Eatonton , Georgia, the eighth and last child of Willie Lee and Minnie Lou Grant Walker. Her parents were sharecroppers, and money was not always available as needed. At the tender age of eight, Walker lost sight of one eye when one of her older brothers shot her with a BB gun by accident. This left her in somewhat a depression, and she secluded herself from the other children. Walker felt like she was no longer a little girl because of the traumatic experience she had undergone, and she was filled with shame because she thought she was unpleasant to look at. During this seclusion from other kids her age, Walker began to write poems. Hence, her career as a writer began.

The day I figured out how to use the microwave and toaster oven was also the day I became host of my very own reality cooking show. With every second of my endeavor being captured by my personal camerawoman, my little sister, I was sure I would be joining the ranks of the top celebrity cooks on television. However, it wasn’t long until I realized I was not even close to becoming the Next Food Network Star, and I more rightfully belonged with the Worst Cooks in America.
According to, Natural News reports that 1980’s and 1990’s obesity doubled for adults and tripled for children. Unfortunately, Child faced a large amount of criticism due to her recipes having ingredients such as, butter and heavy cream. She believed ''Everybody is overreacting. If fear of food continues, it will be the death of gastronomy in the United States” (Lawson, Carol. Julia Child boiling, answers her critics). Julia believed that food was the most stress-free and most guiltless pleasure in life and that we should not dread food. Even though, she had these critics it did not affect the individuals who obtained enjoyment from her food
Realism is often portrayed by writers such as Alice Walker. Her poems, essays, short stories, and novels portray her views on feminism and civil rights while giving a realist approach that has provoked readers for many years. Her horrific and brutally honest writing style made the world see a different view of minority women and allowed her to receive the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Color Purple (“Alice Walker”). She lived a life of poverty and racial discrimination, which led her to become an opinionated feminist. Walker’s realistic writing style portrays her obscure upbringing and her feminist opinions; in her work The Color Purple, she shows the aspects of growing up as a minority woman and the frequency of racial discrimination.
Alice Walker is a well known poet, novelist, essayist, educator, biographer, and editor and her quote “Black women can survive only by recovering the rich heritage of their ancestors,” best characterizes her works and life as a black women in this world.
