The Airline Transport License Challenge

“This license is required to act as pilot-in-command of an airliner and reflects your skill and knowledge as a pilot. The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) License is the pinnacle of the pilot license structure.” ("Airline Transport Pilot License."). This is basically the same as going to school for years in order to gain the doctorate. Both of my parents have flown planes in their lives. My father making a living out of flying and my mother haven taken the courses needed to get an Airline Transport License. It is a long and arduous process; it takes a lot of time and preparation in order to obtain one along with long flight hours, tests, and knowing the tools of the plane.

In order to obtain an ATP you must first meet the minimal requirements. You must go to a flight school in order to take and prepare for the aeronautical and practical tests ("Entry Requirements" p. LA/SA-I,Virgin Islands-1). North Carolina has many flight training schools. The most prominent of which is named, oddly enough, ATP in Raleigh and Charlotte NC ("North Carolina Flight Schools."). ATP requires a basic fee of $44,995 to upwards of $60,990. There is also an age limitation of twenty-three in order for one to be apart of the program ("Airline Transport Pilot License.’’) There are two programs that one can apply for in ATP as well as two sub-programs within them. The two main programs are the “Private and 85 Hours” and “From Zero Time”. Private to 85 Hours allows for a private pilot to become a commercial pilot that flies multi engine aircraft and is the standard for pilots.
