Air Pollution within Peru
Introduction
Pollutants and toxic wastes have been one of the major contributors to air pollution and other toxic smog. More recently, Peru has seen higher levels of air pollution than it has even seen before. These extremely high levels have been mainly due to the high emissions from automobiles that contain many harmful gases; to people and the environment. Despite many efforts that are being taken to improve the state in which Peru’s environment is currently in, not much change has actually been seen. The emergence of air pollution around Peru has been quite rapid as many older cars are producing more emissions than they use to and factories are increasing the amount they put out into the air. Lima the capital of Peru (seen in Figure 1)
suffers from the worst air pollution among all other Latin American capitals with many toxic chemicals such as nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, two which are very harmful to humans and the environment. Humans are not supposed to be exposed to such chemicals thus different negative effects have come from exposure. The degree of harm that Peru is currently is in very high and serious actions need to be taken in order to assure it can stabilize itself and return to average levels of pollution. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of toxic emissions within Peru and to recommend solutions to manage these impacts.
Description
Peru which has a population of roughly seven million people experiences some of the most frequent and worst concentrations of air pollution. Concentration levels taken between 2001 and 2005 averaged around 185 micrograms per cubic meter of air, which placed Lima in the top 10 percentile for the most exposure of pollutants amon...

“In 2008, 21,000 Canadians died from the effects of air pollution.”(Geduld) Although most of these deaths are from long term exposure to the pollutants there was still “2,682 deaths caused from short term exposure.”(Geduld).“5.5 percent of cardiopulmonary (heart and lung disease related) deaths can be attributed to ground-level ozone exposure, which has increased over the past decade.” (David Suzuki Foundation)
Air pollution is an ongoing and serious problem. From Mexico to Argentina, pollutants in the air have reached dangerous levels, with implications for both public health and the planet’s changing climate (Maxwell). There are many solutions that can be used; there are international standards that can be adopted in Latin America, clean transportation and energy generation technologies. If those who govern the countries within Latin America work to get their countries off of dirty fossil fuels, the skies will clear up and their people will breath freely. For example, “the Chilean Environmental Superintend has taken significant steps against big polluters, forty-nine sanction proceedings are underway this year, with only one acquittal. The firms in question are required to invest time and money in fo...
Mexico City adds an estimated one million new residents each year, resulting in one million new aggravates to the city’s already abominable air quality (Collins, 119). Over the span of a generation, Mexico City’s air has gone from being one of the world’s cleanest to one of the world’s most polluted, as well as the most polluted in its country. The average visibility in the city is down from almost 100 km in the 1940s to only 1.5 km today, removing the once beautiful landscape of the surrounding snow-capped volcanoes (Yip, 1). More significantly, however, Mexico City’s air problems have resulted in a notable decrease in the health of its residents, particularly its children. There are a variety of reasons for the decline in air quality, including factory emissions, suspended particles, vehicles, as well as problematic geographic hindrances. Fortunately, Mexico City is doing a lot in response to the problem, including vehicle control, mass transit improvements, required industry emission reductions, and an investing in research and education programs. Regardless of these actions, however, Mexico City’s air is still significantly affecting the quality of life for its residents, and the city must continue to make changes in order for real progress to occur.
Many cities are currently affected by air pollution and Hong Kong is one example. Hong Kong’s air pollution level often exceeds the recommended air pollution level put out by the World Health Organization, and Hong Kong’s pollution index was at “very high” meaning that it exceeded 101, for 34% of the time (Hunt, 2011). Another example, when Hong Kong excee...
Pollution is affecting many individuals and life, as we know it. We need to do something about how it’s affecting our world. That’s why I urge the issue that more people should realize that pollution is an issue that needs to be prevented because of its negative consequences. Which are health affects, the total destruction of environments, and the death of animals and plants. More awareness must be brought up amongst the people and they must realize the long-term benefits it has for the world.
The U.S. and global world are in the state of epidemic environmental issues where global warming and climate change is a threat to our biodiversity. Globalization is advancement to the global world in helping our economy; however, it also produces a threat to our environment. One of the threats to our world is pollution. Three of the major types of pollution that are hazardous to our environment are air pollution, land pollution, and water pollution. Air pollution is a result of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, arsenic, nitrogen dioxide, mercury dioxins, and leas being released into the air due to massive amounts of fuel combustion, industrial production, and amount of vehicles being used (Mooney, et al., 2015). The soaring levels of air pollution
In recent years, Asian air population has been considered a threat to health and the environment. According to research, World Health Organizations reported that Asian air pollution, “is responsible for an estimated 537,000 premature deaths annually with indoor air pollution being responsible for over double this number of deaths” (Schwela). These statistics have raised concern for civilians and surrounding countries as they look at the damage to society the pollution causes. On June 21, 2013, South East Asia experienced an immense amount of air pollution. This event was named the Haze Crisis, where it reached a record of 401, being the largest amount of hazardous pollution ever recorded (Ho et al.). The levels reached during this crisis called for civilians to stay inside where they were advised to wear masks both indoors and outdoors. There is a growing need for intervention as researchers look to identify the most effective measures to protect human health and the environment. To identify the most effective measures, scientists look at the causation of the pollution. Although there is no direct single cause for the air pollution, all factors combined contribute to this issue. Asian air pollution threatens the environment and public health; it is a direct result of industrial pollution, biomass pollution, and forest fire pollution.
Limiting car usage is a crucial factor to reduce pollution in our planet. This is due to the fact that automobiles are a “huge impediment to current efforts to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions” (source 1). Additionally, shortening the usage of cars may help the population to have a better health. In the capital of Colombia, Car-Free is an event during which “millions of Colombians hiked, biked, skated or took buses to work” (source 2). This helps the environment because fewer cars are being used, therefore, less pollution will happen as a result. This event also benefits the population because they will be exposed to a small amount of toxic air and will be more active during that
It is common knowledge that humans cause pollution. As the world’s population increases so does the amount of pollution entering into the atmosphere. More people are
One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. For my research, I have relied mostly on, the school’s database and library, as well as current events.
Air is arguably the most needed element to sustain life on Earth. Air quality is the degree of clean air that surrounds us and good air quality refers to clean, unpolluted air that is essential to maintaining the delicate balance of life on this planet (British Columbia Air Quality 101 2016). However, with the industrialization age and its heavy use of coal power machineries, to today’s age and our ever growing use of automobile air quality has gotten worst. In the US, for example, California has the worst air quality of all the major cities (CNN Air pollution report 2016). However, several efforts are taking place to address the problem.
There have been countless occurrences of disasters due to air pollution, especially in America. Not too long ago in Donora, Pennsylvania in October 1948, there was a smog “invasion” to the city causing 20 deaths and infecting thousands more. Smog is defined as “fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.” The contributor to this disaster was the city’s zinc and steel mill, which blew out constant toxic smoke.
Solving this problem requires a three-pronged approach, as different solutions are required to eliminate, or at least decrease, air pollution from electricity generation, transportation, and industry. All solutions demand cooperation between the government and the public—no solution will succeed without the dedicated effort of the population as a whole . The Clean Air Act, which was passed in 2008 but only went into effect in 2011 , is the government’s main attempt at managing this problem. It was created to improve air quality and reduce air pollution, thereby improving the health and quality of life for people of the region and protecting the environment for future generations . It details several different programs aimed at achieving this goal.
Air pollution is a type of pollution that can severely damage our environment as well as the earth’s atmosphere. Air pollution occurs all the time when the air contains many substances ...
To summarize everything that is stated above, Air pollution is the worst enemy of all countries in the world. It is one thing that the countries cannot avoid it but they can lessen/reduce it. Reducing the contamination in Air will take up loads of adjustment to the Filipinos. By adapting a new lifestyle and embracing the problem of what air pollution brings to the Philippines will have a better understanding on how to fix this economical problem. Being a knowledgably Filipino will go a long way to serve the Philippines. Preventing short and long term illness that brought upon by bad air will reduce if the Filipino people will cooperate to the suggested simple ways on how to lessen omitting air pollution in their surroundings. The Philippines is a country full of heavenly body of waters, with tall mountains, and healthy provinces which consist of full bloomed trees/plants. Having to just destroy it because of omitting numerous gas emissions from vehicles and factories that blasts smoke will destroy the environment of where the Filipino people are living. The fact that the Filipino people can do little things one step at a time will bring a huge impact to the Philippines such as recycling and commuting. Moreover, the faith of the environmental pollution lies on the hands of the Filipino people. Certain values must be adapted in order to change the mentality and behaviour of the Filipinos. In all together, it will bring awareness and Filipino people will act on the
