Now so more than at any other time in human history people are living longer due to such things as advances in medicine to just healthy lifestyle choices. To some extent the reason why those of the older generation may be living longer is because of simply living simply. Quite often you will hear from the older generation that life moved at a slower pace or that if they wanted something they had to work hard and save for it. Attitude and acceptance played a big part and just being content with how life was seemed the to be the norm. The difference between what one generation previous has lived through in comparison to the generations following life experiences are often referred to as a generation gap. While some are dread to think about ageing even going so far as plastic surgery to ward ageing off, others deal with it when it happens but one fact will never change and that is ageing is inevitable. The odd pain here and the unexplained memory loss there many put down to ageing. The years pass by and unless something unfortunate befalls us we should make it to a fairly ripe old age. This essay is about life experiences as seen through the eyes of an elderly person who is over eighty years of age living independently in this case by themselves in the community.

The research participant now known as 'Ava' is an eighty six year old female non-smoker who lives alone (refer to Appendix A). First impressions were that Ava takes great care with personal hygiene and likes to look presentable when going out in public. Lots of hair that still has its' colour. Skin intact with some loss of elasticity. Nails appeared strong with good colour under the nails. Wears dentures but no sores around mouth (refer to Appendix A). Well sp...

Next three community initiatives were attended and mentioned to the research participant with the aim of getting the participant involved in the three initiatives. Then the research participants self health perception were compared to some current statistics for older people. Followed by factors that enable the research participant to live independently such as support from family, friends, community and financial. The research participant has at least one child living in close proximity who visits on a regular basis. Constantly in communication with two other children by way of phone. Has many friends both within and outside of the church. Participant on a benefit and cooks own meals but does have home help to clean and to get places.
