In the past decades, there has been a heated debate concerning whether design aesthetic or functionality should be the core of industrial design. Some believe design should be purely aesthetic. while others believe design should be appealing and functional. An aesthetic design should be visually appealing. On the other hand, a functional design focuses towards to the practicability of the design. However as a designer, I strongly believe a well executed design should be functional while maintaining a high level of visual aesthetic.
Although some believe aesthetic and functional aspects can seemingly separated from each other, but both aspects are considered inseparable in these days because of the advent of technology and the rapid changes of consumer’s preferences and behaviour. According to Luchs suggested the unity of product design aesthetic and functionality plays a significant role when it comes to consumers’ product preferences when unity refers to the perception that design aesthetic and functionality share common associations (2008, p.6). Disunified products are less preferred and accepted by consumers compare to an unified product. Research suggested this behaviour was mediated by the perception that unified products make more sense than disunified product (2008 Luchs). This theory is proven by the different levels of success experienced by early entrants to the hybrid car segment. Consider the fact that Honda and Toyota are the early entrants to the hybrid car segment and introduced hybrid car that offers identical hybrid technology, fuel economy, driving dynamics and seat capacity and space but Toyota decided to launch the Prius with unique form that was widely accepted and associated with the hybrid technology. Mean...

...ly followed and praised by numerous world-renowned industrial designers and architects, for instance Victor Papanek, Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfuss (2010 Marshall). Although Sullivan’s phrase has evolved the design world drastically however this philosophy is now considered as outdated. Interdisciplinary collaboration has proven to create products that suit today’s needs.
In conclusion, aesthetic and function play a significant part when it comes to industrial design. Although some believe design should be purely focus on aesthetic meanwhile the others believe design should be functional while has an appealing appearance. The research material clearly support the idea that design being function while visually appealing. To achieve that which requires involvement in various stages of design process and requires enormous amount of design thinking processes as well.

One main item that could affect design is the concept of liability. In today’s day and age, organizations are quick to lay blame on an individual instead of looking at process improvement. For example, a manufacturing organization that identifies how to improve processes to avoid/correct seeing defects would strengthen the loyalty of its workers vs. one that identifies individuals to blame. Most new design is reviewed
In the early twentieth century the Modern movement of architecture and industrial design came about. This movement was a reaction to the change within society and the introduction of new technologies. The ever changing world and technology meant artists to evolve alongside the changing world and this kind of ‘industrial revolution’ that was happening. Modernists ideas have seeped into every form of design especially architecture and design. Although most modernists insisted they were not following any style in particular, their work is instantly

This explains why for ‘many directors, commercial and industrial architecture are just a necessary shell for their business processes’ (Susanne-Knittel Ammerschuber (2006) pg10). They consider dimensions for example surfaces, floor levels and converted space to be the stand out feature of this corporate architecture. Through doing this, the architectural ethos is overlooked during design. The architectural potential is therefore limited as it tends to overlook the surrounding context; the urban environment, local identity as well as the surrounding landscape design. Instead it...
The development of design in the trend of globalization is urging designer performing their works in the more standard and professional processes, but the variety of inspirations in the design world still playing their crucial roles. The globalization of design has created a more complicated situation for both domestic and international designer. The application of international design thinking also could help designer to trim their design method and design thinking to approach the more intricate market, to conquer the gaps of different cognizes that effected by different cultures or even the human nature.
A good design begins with a creation or plan for the making of an object or service. It is a strategic approach towards a person’s (usually a client or target audience) required unique expectations. A design generally defines the specifications and parameters in achieving its main objectives. Often there are no key attributes as to what would make a design successful and interesting. Products and peoples needs and wants or taste often change and revolve around time. This brings a definite change in the market and its emerging’s trends. This cycle of evolution will always exist, but finally it is the factor of emotional response with the customer that will determine whether a product is successful or not. Whether the design is an object or it is a concept, the design that we see is an accumulation of various concepts and decisions that have been brought together from a variety of disciplines. In order for a consumer to view the design as something that is good it takes a unique combination of aesthetics, quality and ergonomics to make a design successful. Often we recognize a bad design at its first glance and a bad design often forces one to take in many confusing and conflicted content. So what makes our design/ product fail?
Historically speaking, there have been many famous architects that have struggled with finding a ratio between aesthetics and functionalism. Le Corbusier is a good example ...
One of the key ideas of the modern era was to forge the designs of the future on the corpses of the past, disregarding everything from the last era and moving forward with new ideals and styles. Refining and discarding they shaped, molded and constricted the ideas of design until reaching the pinnacle of minimalism. Creating design with pure aesthetics and reducing an object down to its core fundamental elements. Using the ideas of “less is more” or even “using less for more”, the designs ended up simple and elegant with a focus not in quantit...
The elements of design were created by Arthur Wesley Dow to help people see, describe, and create visual qualities in a systematic way. It consists of 7 elements: line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space.

A new product on the market may look all shiny and new and be appealing to customers but what is the story behind the product and what is the underlying future for this product. Where were the original materials from? Is it all legalised? Where did the manufacturing take place? How was the product manufactured? These are all questions that are never properly addressed in the design industry and are just simply overlooked. They are the aspects of designing and producing a new product that need to be carefully looked at to make a good design, and to make sustainable products.
Design has major impact with concerns to environmental qualities. This field is a direct study of the relationship between behaviouristic actions of its inhabitants. Designers constantly interact with people and communicate to solve the needs of their clients regardless of large or small scale projects. Analysis is key in combining creativity with managerial design solutions. These outside-of-the-box designers have the ability to create beautiful, safe and functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces using common factors, designing for communities as well as,
...ressions make a huge difference in the business decisions it’s important for businesses to think about how their property looks. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small park or a big movie theatre it’s all about making the customer or business look good. When a person enters a place of entertainment they want to be welcomed and want to have memories of a good time and things to talk about to their friends which is why the importance of designs in everything needs to be well thought as it sets the moods for all occasions.
