In 1994 the first GMO product, which was a tomato at the time arrived at its first ever grocery store. The delayed ripening of this tomato on shelves was a lot more profitable than the local organic tomato’s that they originally had. In 1996 in Australia the first ever GMO herbicide was used and sprayed amongst crops which started the first stage of pollution and argumentative controversy that will last until the day it stops. By 2011 negative toxins in a pregnant women were found and said to have passed to the fetus. GM products have been running the food industry ever since it became the newest way to farm and mass produce crops. Although harming someone’s personal health, environment, and way of living isn’t the answer to creating sustainable foods on a mass level and it must be stopped now. The production of GM materials could be the beginning of a new era of cheap sustainable foods, however it can also be the beginning of an era of fatal, and life threating diseases and illnesses that will not just stop but spread until something is done about the production of GMO goods. The claim of saying GMO’s are not bad for you or the environment can be made since there is no plausible evidence to show that GMO’s are bad. Companies are actually extremely benefiting from GM made products and the mass-production of these materials can make prices much lower in grocery stores across the Untied States. Although these are not reasons to continue the manufacturing of GM foods simply cause the risk of continuing to make these can spell disaster for the environment, personal health, and plants. GM materials can also potentially decrease the nutritional value of plants, and foods when new bacteria is put into them and is not labeled because th... ... middle of paper ... ...s is crucial for the future of the Untied States, and can only be stopped by the concerned public at this point. The pollution that comes from these products doesn’t just help keep the GM plants alive but they also kill off insects, birds, and any other animal that comes in contact with enough GM material to kill them. The pollution of these herbicides can easily spread to another farm that doesn’t use GM materials in their crops as well and kill off anything in its midst. While GM products are being sold in our local grocery stores as well the FDA wont even let out the results of what they exactly have in them and what effect (GM products) can potentially have on an individuals health. All in all GM products are effecting the environment and foods we eat in a negative way and if something isn’t done very soon there is no limit on how big the consequences can be.
Why we should ban GMO’s? In GMOs 101 Stephen H. Howell, director the Plant Sciences Institute at Iowa State University, stated “Other GM plants, such as Roundup Ready corn, were created to survive the spraying of the herbicide Roundup, which kills weeds and would normally kill the plant, too”. It tells how some crops were made to survive herbicide sprays that would normally kill the plant, like Roundup. Think about that for a minute, the plant can withstand round up, which is deadly to humans, should anyone really be consuming
Stop and think about your food before letting it enter your body. Is it safe? Is it good for me? Well, if you find yourself stuck in one of those situations where you can’t decide whether GM foods are good for you or bad, you’ve come to the right place. GM crops can be dangerous for you because the allergies it can give you. These GM crops are organisms that have been inserted with genes to make them look better for you, but remember, you can’t judge a book by its cover. These “delicious” looking crops can look like the best crops you ever laid eyes on, but on the inside it can cause you to get allergies that can cause you to rethink, is this really good for me? Research shows in the article, “GMOs and Genetically Modified Foods Risks and Dangers of GMOs”, that, “This can create an overproduction of allergens, toxins, carcinogens, or antinutrients.” This disseminates with clarity that GM crops can create many different allergens a...
To begin with, there is too much Gmo in our food. We should make less foods with GMO and grow more foods on farms. Also a lot of people prefer non GMO foods over GMO foods. If we also make more of our food on farms we can get more people to get jobs. “ GM critics also worry that transgenic crops could harm wildlife and cause lasting damage to fragile food chains. GM crops harm wildlife. Since some birds and small mammals feed on these crops they will soon disappear. They will disappear because they are making the crops
The growing controversy over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have left many Americans and people all around the world with various questions and concerns as to what they are really putting into their bodies. The issue at hand is one that, although is very dominant in the world today, many are still uneducated on the problem and have not been informed with the facts. GMOs have been placed in the world without much question or second thought and it is time that America hear what should have been told many years ago. Although over ninety percent of the food eaten everyday has been genetically modified in the United States, many today believe the food they eat everyday is perfectly healthy, safe, and beneficiary for them. On the contrary, however, others will argue that the food has become poisoned, unsanitary, and detrimental to the health of themselves and others due to the ongoing issue of genetically engineered foods. As food production grows, and more suspicions rise to the surface, many people are left with the begging question, “Are GMOs really bad for us?” Everyone one is entitled to his or her own opinion and there are many out there who would like to believe one side or another. Regardless of who believes what, after the research is conducted, in hopes of accumulating a better understanding of the issue, it will be known what genetically modified organisms really are, where genetically mutated crops originate from and whether genetically modifying crops are harming or benefiting the world.
While GMO (genetically modified organism) crops are quickly taking over landscapes across the world, there are also countries that have banned the use of GMO crops. Currently, 28 nations have grown genetically modified crops around the world, while nearly three dozen nations prohibit or ban their cultivation. GMOs have been proven to be unhealthy, harmful towards the environment, and creates dangerous side effects in several studies done by the Center of Food Safety. There are positive outcomes of genetically modified organisms, however, they are still harmful to consume. Due to the effects of GMO products, GMOs contaminated food products should not only be banned in certain places
GMO 's provide us with the increased amounts of food that we need to feed an constantly growing population. As Nobel Prize laureate, Dr Norman E. Borlaug puts it: "There is no evidence to indicate that biotechnology is dangerous. After all, mother nature has been doing this kind of thing for God knows how long,". (Tervil Okoko, AgBioWorld) GMO 's have been around for far longer than people give them credit for – and in fact many of the foods we 've grown to love today like apples, bananas, grapes, and potatoes have all been modified for ease of human consumption. GMO 's reduce the amount of land needed in order to plant crops, as they produce crops of the same size with more yield than non-genetically engineered food. GMO 's allow for more nutritious, resilient, and better tasting food. There are currently no credible studies proving that the use of rDNA can lead to health defects in humans, and genetically engineered foods go through more rigorous testing than non-GMO 's. Contrary to the statistics, GMO 's are currently being developed to reduce pesticide use through intrinsic pest resistance – and a German study that was published on PLOS even concluded that “On average, GM technology adoption has reduced chemical pesticide use by 37%, increased crop yields by 22%, and increased farmer profits by 68%” (Wilhelm Klümper & Matin Qaim, PLOS). GMO 's can even help us fight back against climate change, as it allows the creation of crops resistant to severe weather – like droughts, which California (one of the best sources for crops in the nation) is currently experiencing with no particular end date in sight. Additionally, because of the aforementioned factors, GMO 's can be used to fight back against world hunger. They 're produced in mass quality, are cheaper, and more durable than non-genetically modified foods – in short, they 're an incredibly
Recently, MIT Technology Review’s editor published an article about the future of GMO. To provide some context, GMOs are genetically modified organisms that are artificially altered using a process known as recombinant DNA technology. GMOs have faced a lot of controversy, mainly regarding the health implications of GMOs. Currently, plant scientists and startups have avoided creating new genetically modified crops, due to the large costs and long approval times for new crop modifications. As a result, large agricultural and chemical producers, such as Monsanto control basically the entire GMO market and turn it into a very lucrative business. The outcome of this situation is a scary amount of dependency on a handful of profit-oriented companies that genetically modify seeds to maximize profits, rather than to improve the well-being of the consumer.
People say gmos are good for your body health, gmos stop people from starving,a good for hungry people. Gmo’s are not useful.Gmos is a disaster waiting to happen. I don’t agree with them.It can cause dangerous health risk and lead to death.Gmo’s are very deadly.
Thirty years ago an average person could walk into any grocery store and purchase their desired food product without many fears. They could confidently purchase a stalk of corn or a bag of potato chips knowing that consuming them will not put their health at risk . They could happily purchase fresh fruits and vegetables knowing that they have been grown naturally in an environmentally friendly, chemical free and safe environment. Thirty years later, this is not the case. Today, consumers are kept in the dark and are part of an uncontrolled, unregulated mass human experiment known as genetic engineering . The result of this experiment are genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are a large group of organisms
Even though many do not know information about GMOs, some are being misinformed about the truth of GMOs. Since the creation of Genetically Modified Organisms in the 1930s, many have been told that GMOs are safe and do not have negative effects upon consumption, which is misleading and not fully trustworthy(Miller1). As a result, many who have been misleaded have been tricked into believing false information and are now affected with various risks. With various surveys being conducted in order to see the viewpoints of people on the use of GMOs in food, the number of people who are pro-GMO is only increasing. Whenever ⅓ of 1,000 people surveyed are in favor for chemicals that have a possibility of hurting them, then there must be a resolution to this ongoing problem(Philips1). The government should reduce these numbers and provide the truth to the public. We need to realize ourselves that the reality of food production is not being provided to us, and if we want to end the false ideas from affecting us anymore. Instead having 23% of 1000 people knowing about GMOs, everyone must know the truth and reality of the food production in the U.S(Non Gmo1). If so were to happen, consequently the future of the nation will become increasing in
“Genetically modified foods are a "Pandora's box" of known and unknown risks to humans and the environment. They have been forced onto the American public by multinational biotech and agribusiness corporations without adequate oversight and regulation by the United States government (Driscoll, SallyMorley, David C).”Genetically Modified Food is food which has been chemically altered by scientists during the production process to give the food more nutrients, better appearance, and a longer shelf-life (Rich, Alex K.Warhol, Tom). The importance of this issue is that these GMO’s can actually have a negative effect in our society in general. It could mutate in a negative way and cause cancer or other diseases. Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
The labeling of food made with genetically modified plants and produced from animals fed with genially modified food is completely voluntary. So basically the American consumer has no way to make informed choices. If by any chance any of these products cause adverse side effects in the future Americans are completely at the mercy of the retailers. The public has no way to make informed decisions of whether they want to eat genetically modified food or not. Upon further research I found out that there are over 40 plants varieties that have completed the federal requirement for commercialization. These approvals include foods with drugs in them, fish, fruits and nuts that mature faster, and plants that produce plastics. (NERC 2005)
According to anti-GMO activists (known as “Frankenfoods”), “GMO’s can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers” (Text 2, lines 1-2). This is harmful because our environment is important, and if we decide to ignore it, and not take care of it, the environment will be destroyed, but more importantly we will be because we depend on the environment for survival. Health problems also play a big role when talking about GMO’s because we are dependent on being healthy. If we use GMO’s then we will have more health problems, not benefiting anyone in any way, just making things worse. Some people beg to differ. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) said that “the science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe” (Text 2, lines 10-12). While some people think that this is safe, they are wrong because there are two sides two every story, themselves only focused on the upsides of GMO’s, without even considering the downsides to them. Also, according to them, “the science is quite clear”, while if you look earlier in the text it shows how unclear the science actually is, listing some downsides to GMO’s. The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the British Royal Society also agree that GMO’s are safe. They say that, “Consuming foods containing ingredients derived from GM [genetically
...M crops will escalate the cost of farming, causing many small farmers to potentially loose their businesses. As GMOs continue to affect human life and the environment, it should be mandatory for products to be labeled if they are genetically modified, thus giving consumers the right to make their own decision. With the list of health risks and environmental issues rising, the use of GMOs should be banned as a method to increase food supply and continue a natural approach to eliminate all risks.
Let’s start by saying if anyone has snacked on anything today or recently, chances are more than likely you’ve consumed a genetically modified food (GM food). Many would ask different questions about GM foods? For example, a person may ask so what, I’ve been eating the same foods my entire life and I’m still healthy. Also some may ask does it hurt the environment? This is where I would inform someone on how it can be harmful and is best to stay away from GM foods. But first, I should start off by giving a definition of what a GM food actually is. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) genetically modified organisms can be defined as organisms such as plants, animals, and microorganisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that doesn’t occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. This same process is also known as genetic engineering. Surprisingly, some of the genes that are inserted in soy, if consumed, can transfer into DNA of bacteria living inside us and the toxic insecticide produced by GM corn was found in the blood of a pregnant women and her unborn fetus (American Academy of Environmental Medicine). In addition after the discovery of GM foods in 1996, the number of health problems increased substantially. The percentage of Americans with three or more health illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in the time of 9 years; food allergies increased as well as disorders such as autism and digestive problems (Institute for Responsible
