Since the occurrence and rise of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter in the past decade, there has been much debate on their benefits. While social networking sites are a useful tool in our increasingly connected world, they can also adversely affect our development and the nature of our social interactions. Therefore, it is important to first identify their advantages and disadvantages to effectively use them.
Social networking sites offer a medium for people to keep in touch with their acquaintances and maintain constant contact with their friends. This increased connectivity opens new paths for relationships to be built and bonds to be strengthened. In this way, social networking sites help to complement and enhance a person’s social experience. Sites such as Facebook and Tumblr allow people to find out more about their friends’ interests, as well as their personal lives, which can lead to more productive conversations and discussions, leading to better and stronger relationships.
Additionally, social networki...
Social networking has changed the way individuals interact with each other on a daily basis. The social network Facebook has had a huge impact on this. Social networking has both benefits and downsides. Social networking on Facebook has drastically changed the number of people one can interact with regularly, an individual communicated with the people who were part of their daily lives. In the past, a person interacted and communicated with others from work, school, or in the neighborhood. Nowadays, one can interact with people all over the world. Some people have hundreds, or thousands of online friends. Never in the past would a person be able to have that much interaction with others. Another benefit to networki...
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Online social networking sites, like Facebook, are simultaneously good and bad for its users. Facebook is both a useful tool and a waste of time depending on the view of the user. The positives of Facebook’s tools provide and maintain the ties and nodes from face-to-face interactions. Through posting comments, photos, and personal updates, whether likes or status updates, the user gains more social capital. In counter to these positives, Facebook promotes the notion of normalizing stalking, a continuous cycle of envy and the fixation upon oneself. To conclude the negatives of Facebook far out-weigh the positives, suggesting that people need to understand their virtual privacy, and that Facebook should be used as a service rather than convenient way to communicate between friends. Facebook is a facade of the user’s identity that provides a false sense of empowerment and ownership of their life.
This research is unique because it will give light to the individuals who are against social networking that will not take to consideration that it has any positive outcomes at all and to those who believe that social networking has no downfalls and are too blinded by the social networking to even notice the affects it has on their own lives.
Social media is all about staying together and communicating with each other. After all, without being able to communicate, how could we ever get anything done? This brings us to the most common use of social media, social networking. Social networking has made a very big contribution to society, especially over the last few years. There different kinds of social networks, and so many different websites and smart phone apps, but they can be broken down into 7 categories. Those 7 categories are: personal social connections, multimedia sharing, professional soci...
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
In recent years, social networking sites have rapidly gained popularity among people at all ages. A large number of people have registered and become members of some social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Wechat. Also, people spend a lot of time on these sites chatting, playing games, and making friends. Social networking sites have become a part of people’s life. However, what accounts for the popularity of these sites? As far as I’m concerned, this phenomenon, which social networking sites are very popular nowadays, is caused by three important reasons.
Today social media has become a big influence on society. There are many different social media sites that allow people to interact with others. Such social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There are many more different sites, but these are the popular networks that are being used today. These sites allow you to connect with anybody you want to. Social media sites can make you feel connected with others and seem like the best thing, but at the same time it can be a weakness that many of us have.
I chose to quote Kahleed on this because he successfully pointed out the negative effects that technology and social media have on the way we communicate with each other and that he believes it is causing people to forget how to relate face to face. Specific forms of social media change the way we interact with one another in a multitude of ways. Other benefits come with social media relationships and personal interactions as social media is used as an advantage to make it less complex to find your old friends and also discover new people to network with or introduce you to new matches. Starting with Facebook, I know a lot of users usually use this social network to stay connected with family and friends.
Recently there was a very big revolution in the field of modern technology, It has become popular everywhere. Social websites nowadays became a new trends for all people in the world, they affect our lives wildly. daily People depend on these sites strongly for different purposes. Lately we became dependent on Facebook and twitter completely and other sites.
Supporters of social networking sites say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials. Social networks are now widespread in our world with existing social networks expanding, social networking sites are being created for educators, medical professionals all accessible 24 hours a day via computer, tablet, smart phone, and Internet-enabled devices. Challengers of social networking say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication, waste time on frivolous activity and spread false and potentially dangerous information.
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram? Or how many retweets did you get on your totally relatable and borderline inspirational tweet? As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (Rainie). Also more than 9 out of 10 American teenagers use social media(Blaszczak). Because of social networking we are becoming more connected than ever before. Important information can spread faster than wildfire, and we now have the ability to have friends and relationships all over the world. With the ability to communicate and interact with anyone at our fingertips what could go wrong? Well...lots of things.
The use of social networking has both its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is “an Internet social network can help you connect with other people who share your interest, and find resources to ga...
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
Social networking sites like Facebook can have both negative and positive effects. Facebook can leave us feeling like we are not good enough if we don’t have enough likes on our pictures or if we do not have a certain amount of friends. While on the other hand it can make us feel empowered and worthy when we have a significant amount of likes on our picture and thousands of friends on Facebook. The following two articles argue whether or not social networking sites like Facebook, have a negative or positive effect on one’s overall well-being. As the old saying goes, there are always two sides to everything.
