Riordan Manufacturing Active Directory Proposal
Introduction
The following is a proposal for the implementation of Active Directory within the Riordan Manufacturing organization. The primary reference for this proposal is the Microsoft guide "Best Practice Active Directory Design for Managing Windows Networks." The contents below will provide a working definition of Microsoft Active Directory, the benefits it will provide to Riordan, a base diagram of Active Directory for Riordan, and a detail analysis of the Active Directory diagram.
Active Directory
Active Directory (AD) is different from specialized and often disconnected directories. AD is designed to play many different roles within an organization. The roles range from managing Windows networks to managing directory enabled applications. (1) The bottom line is that Active Directory empowers organizations to centralize their directory management in a more streamlined, powerful and flexible manner.
Active Directory Benefits
Active Directory brings a wide range of benefits to an organization. The primary benefits stem from the use of AD as a network operating system (NOS). This proposal focuses on utilizing AD as a NOS. The following are highlights of some of the advantages of AD:
Centralized management of very large Windows networks (Active Directory is designed to support millions of objects).
The ability to eliminate resource domains, including the hardware and administration they entail.
Policy-based desktop lockdown and software distribution.
The ability to delegate administrative control over resources where appropriate.
Simplified location and use of shared resources.

In conclusion AD provides very powerful and centralized NOS that can greatly benefit Riordan Manufacturing. Diagram 1 demonstrates the initial proposed implementation of AD. In the future it may become clear that modifications to this proposal may be necessary. For example, that fact that China is a joint venture and connects via satellite only, may require that China utilizes its own forest directory. Furthermore, department accounts OU's may be unnecessary in favor of simplified group assignments and permission setting within the default users containers for each site. These potential modifications only demonstrate the flexibility and power that AD offers Riordan now and in the future.

Active directory is the backbone of Windows Server 2012 and fundamental technology in almost every business / enterprise. ADDS is the server services for security and permission in Windows environment. As we’re planning to set up three sites, create user accounts and security policies for those computers, we will need to use Active Directory. Active Directory configuration will present the most optimized replication of traffic and data between each of the three sites and provide fundamental of failover and redundancy.
The following proposal has been submitted for review by Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. With the current international move to Hangzhou, China and five year strategic plan to expand operations to Shanghai an upgrade to the current information systems is imperative. Careful consideration has been given to the current systems in place and consensus amongst the Team is that Riordan will greatly benefit from an upgraded Management Information System. Upon review of your growing business and the multiple functional systems currently in place, it is vital that Riordan provide its management team with the tools they will need to be successful now and into the future.
The essential task of the manufacturing, planning and control system is to manage efficiently the flow of material, the use of people and equipment, and to respond to customer requirements by utilizing the capacity of the suppliers, that of internal facilities, and (in some cases) that of customers to meet customer demand. Important ancillary activities involve the acquisition of information from customers on product needs and providing customers with information on delivery dates and product status. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief synopsis of the challenges Riordan is currently experiencing with information technology and what steps should be taken for improvement. IT developments will be examined, also key improvements that could be made to increase company productivity, increased collaboration, focusing on fast and easy access to customer and supplier information. Research has shown that by further developing our IT infrastructure, Riordan can stay competitive with the most up to date technology available in the field.

The implementation phase of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is the most perplexing and crucial part of the project. Riordan Manufacturing has carefully chosen the stakeholders to ensure implementation of the Human Resources system. Going forward, a decision needs to be made in regards to what departments get the system installed first to last. The first group to use this new HR system will be the Information Technology department, followed by Human Resources. Going in this order will be the most strategic in gaining acceptance and will also train the IT folks how to use it so they can support it the end users. Lastly the remaining departments will have the software pushed to the workstations, one group at a time.

Subsequent to the Active Directory (AD) implementation discussion, this proposal addresses possible user accounts and group organizations for Riordan Manufacturing. This document discusses user and group accounts available through AD, and addresses possible implementation plans for the parent domain of riordanmanufacturing.com. These plans could also be implemented in the child domains for the four Riordan facilities, though addressing the actual implementations for those sites falls beyond the scope of this document.
