During my Professional Seminar II and Field Experience I observed in Mary Doe’s 4th grade classroom. During this observation I witnessed the effects of a learning environment that was designed by the students for the students.
I was exposed to a classroom that was very diverse and learned the importance of teaching for learner differences. Not are students are the same and when the needs of a classroom are not being met the students can quickly become frustrated and deterred from learning. When the student’s needs are being met they are able to interact with their peers without the frustration and with guidance can maintain a safe learning environment.
Students are social by nature and given the right instructional strategies and good classroom management teachers can promote a positive learning environment. While differentiating instruction and being able to design lessons geared towards the needs of diverse learners are currently highly prized skills for teachers, this has not always been the case. The history of education in the United States is a history of segregation. Even today, schools and curriculum are designed to meet the needs of a core group of students, which does not include students with disabilities (Hitchcock, Meyer, Rose, & Jackson, 2002). In the past, learners who were different, out of the mainstream, or did not fit into the mold to which teachers taught (were not part of the core) learned how or lost out on learning. This is not to say that teachers of the past did not care about their students, about being effective teachers, or about student learning. However, as schools are mirrors reflecting mainstream societal norms (Chartock, 2010; Delpit, 2006)—and, given that our society has not always valued diversity in people, be it due to disability, class, culture, or race—teachers in the past have largely focused their efforts where they could earn the largest return on their investment: the average student .

Although we may accept diversity others may have huge personal hang ups, which will prevent positive learning from taking place. As a teacher we need to identify and knock down these learning barriers to create a positive learning environment.

My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Therefore, I will focus my classroom on being goal driven and will help each student obtain their goals. Thus, helping my students have positive self efficacy. I can say I have not seen them in my classroom. I have called his mother, but was only able to get so far with her because she only speaks Spanish. I think he might have some literacy problems. After reading some of his work, I am assuming he has some self-efficacy issues with his ability to read and write.

De Jesus (2012) continues to say that everyone is distinct. Every learner varies in background knowledge, cultural, social, and cognitive development. Some are more visual learners, while others learn better by listening, yet others will remember and record data easier through hands on experience such as creating projects. Therefore, this information should alert instructors that change is inevitable. Necessary modifications in the classroom must be made in order to accommodate everyone’s needs and prevent repetitive scenarios such as the one depicted above.
Philosophical Statement and classroom management model I am committed to ensuring that I provide a classroom environment that is safe and supportive, as well as interesting and rewarding for my students by interpreting the curriculum in a way that meets the individual needs of the students, and is suited to their individual learning styles. The importance of having a curriculum that accommodates diverse learners, it allows the child to learn at their own level or ability. A child with emotional and intellectual challenges may not have the verbal or comprehension skills or the ability to control their body as their peers. With this in mind, classes with diverse learners can excel with an adjusted curriculum. An activity for example, using large Legos to teach the entire class their colors or numbers can help the intellectual challenge by asking to build a building by using on certain colors or amounts. In my classroom, there would be a few different expectations anticipated from students. They would be simple expectations that any teacher would have, since they are so simple that everyone already knows them. The expectations would be to always try your best, actively participate, follow the class rules, respect other, come prepared to class, and complete assignments by their due date. For my students’ expectations of me, that would be up to each class and I would discuss what they expect from me during the first week of school.
Classroom management is the way that a teacher keeps order and gets the student involved. It includes; physical organization, classroom routines, classroom climate, behavior management and the use of time for instruction. Each part is vital to a student’s learning experience and has to be created based off of the students. Physical organization is an important part of keeping the classroom in order and helping the students learn. With social and emotional skills, a high-quality learning environment that has high-quality classroom structure and rules, commitment to the academic success of all students and high performance expectations, student learning is optimized. Attitudes towards learning, behaviour in and out of the classroom and academic performance have shown improvement with development from quality social and emotional learning that is supported through parent involvement and integrated throughout the entire curriculum.
