An advanced practice nurse is thought to be intimately linked to advanced knowledge and skill. In defining the advanced practice nurse and giving insight on the principal foundation of advanced practice, the International Council of Nurses states that an advanced practice nurse is a registered nurse who has developed the skilled knowledge base, multifaceted decision making skills, and clinical proficiencies for extended practice. Completing an advanced nursing degree increases and develops advanced nursing knowledge. Using this knowledge can help spur change in the healthcare field by offering healthcare organizations with skilled nursing professionals and ultimately stimulate optimal patient care. As a graduate student it is essential be able to integrate advanced knowledge and theories from nursing into healthcare practice. Advanced practice nursing students must also combine leadership and developing standards and principles of quality expansion into their healthcare setting (Christensen, 2011).
As an advanced practice student I have found that nursing theories provide the framework on which to base healthcare practices. For example, Benner’s Novice to Expert model attempted to define the basis and growth of nursing knowledge. Having advanced nursing knowledge and being able to apply it into appropriate healthcare settings is key when caring for various patient populations (Christensen, 2011). Through my course of study I have been able to study past nursing theories and research in order to formulate a plan that is evidence based and best for my patient. In the clinical setting, patients should be educated on all topics that are related to their specific disease process or medical condition. Healthcare providers’ should also practice safety measures to prevent injury to themselves as well as the patients. When quality and safety initiatives are taken seriously by both patients and medical professionals, successful health outcomes is promising (Stievano, Jurado, Rocco & Sasso, 2009).
Preparing to enter the professional field as an advanced practice nurse is tedious and requires a lot of dedication to learning and developing advanced nursing knowledge and skills. With these skills, both patients and healthcare organizations as a whole can operate at full potential.
Nursing, as a crucial part of the health care system, keeps evolving while dealing with an increasingly complex clinical situation that involves quality of patient care. Therefore, to successfully handle these scenarios, nursing needs to become more advanced, clinically and academically. A DNP degree is needed in this situation because according to Dunbar- Jacob, Navito & Khalil (2013), a DNP degree is considered to have more impact on nursing than a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree due to the advanced clinical education a DNP provides (p. 425). Hence, the DNP degree has an enormous impact in nursing practice especially in terms of improving clinical care, promoting leadership roles, and improving educational status.
The role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in health care has been identified as a critical role in the goal to provide high-quality health care. APRNs have a bigger role to play in the health care system and it is important that students are provided with relevant and valuable knowledge as well as experience that improve their abilities. In 2011, Barbara Safriet published an article “Federal options for maximizing the value of Advanced Practice Nurses in providing quality, cost-effective health care” from a legal perspective. The article focused on the benefits of utilizing Advance Practice Nurses to the full extent of their abilities as well as the current barriers that APNs encounter in their practice. The aim of this paper is to discuss two regulatory provisions to full deployment of APNs in current health care system, as well as three principle causes of current barriers to removal of the restrictive provisions for the APN. Furthermore, I will discuss the critical knowledge presented in the article and how it relates the APN practice. This article was incorporated into a two-year initiative was launched Institute of Medicine (IOM) and by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in 2008 which addressed the urgency to assess and transform the nursing profession.
The model discusses the impact of new regulations on education for APRN, Licensure Accreditation, Certification & Education Document, certification and practice. The model is implemented to grasp the general understanding and definition of advance practice registered nurse APRN role, inconsistencies with state by state recognition of APRN roles, and determining eligibility for APRN licensure (Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, 2015). The consensus model definition of APRN is a nurse who is educationally rounded to assume the responsibility of assessing, diagnosis, treating, teaching health promotion and disease maintenance, acquired advanced clinical knowledge and skills to provide direct patient care, has passed a national certification examination, and licensed to practice in one of the four roles (Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, 2015).
The white paper entitled, The Doctor of Nursing Practice: Current Issues and Clarifying Recommendations was written and published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The AACN Board of Directors formed a task force to review and clarify the evolution of the doctorate in nursing practice as outlined in the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (DNP Essentials). This paper highlights the recommendations to describe and clarify the characteristics of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduate scholarship, the DNP project, efficient use of resources, program length, curriculum considerations, practice experiences, and guidelines for collaborative partnerships. In 2004, the AACN issued a Position Statement on the Practice Doctorate in Nursing that changed the trajectory of nursing education by recommending that advanced nursing practice education be moved to a doctoral level. DNP practice scholarships are validated when the principles of nursing scholarship are combined with the eight DNP Essentials to prepare a graduate capable of improving health and care outcomes.
Advanced practice registered nurses play a significant part in extending access to health care by providing primary care and specialty care services to clients. Advanced practices registered are mentors, educators, researchers, and administrators. According to Health Resources and Services Administration, “Ninety-six percent of the NP workforce reported being in clinical practice, providing direct patient care” (Health Resources and Services Administration 2016). Furthermore, “Nearly three percentages were in faculty positions and approximately one percent was in administrative positions”(Health Resources and Services Administration 2016).
