The strangers who you encounter in your life come in many shapes and sizes. The unexpected will always happen at times least expected. Pearls are life’s treasures that remind you what life is all about.
I spent two years of my life in a drunken state. Unsure, where I was at in my life at during a point in time when my daughter Emerald needed her mother the most. The bottle with its silver and blue shimmery colors on the label became my twin. That is until I met a man who gave me one of a few pearls in my life.
Jeremiah is a man who has a free spirit. He threw me a lifeline that neither of us knew was happening. He steps to the sound of his own drumbeat. Jeremiah is an A typical man that blends into the crowds until he speaks. I can still remember the day we met ever so clearly.
January was a tad bit cold it was a dreary day with a gray haze in the sky. Perched on my stool promptly at 5:15. I just completed a phone call to Emerald’s Grandpa that I needed him to pick her up. This was becoming a regular thing in these last few months. I had to work late at the office, some big report needed to be completed. This big report was my love affair with a tumbler of Vodka.
The tabletop was smooth and recently had a new glaze of polish applied. The four leaf clovers scribed into the bar top and table was a nice touch. The bar was kept poorly lit for good reason. The seductive smell of a narcotic was filling the room. It felt somewhat like home as I hid from the reality of the outside world.
The usual crowd could be found here. When a stranger walks-in you can see they are out of their element. To many tall stiff drinks into the early evening a man walked in to the bar. His hair was a mess he looked a little bewildered. He gr...

...rities. I saw the way my childhood was and could not believe I was providing the same sad story and wrong doings to my precious child. I asked Emerald what she was digging for her reply was amongst a whole bunch of gibberish a pearl for mommy.
This particular day I was given two pearls. These pearls were of wisdom. My daughter well taken care of dressed and fed needed a loving mother. Jeremiah showed me where and how to use the shovel and get myself out of this pit of despair. He became a lifeline when I was drowning in a bottle of booze at a high rate of speed.
Pearls can be defined as grits of sand found in a clam that can turn it in to something precious. A pearl can also be somebody or something of much value. Although a pearl can be wisdom or a pearl disguised as a friend that comes in to your life with a life preserver and helps you in a time of need.
As I entered the pub, I noticed business was usual, that is, both the dinner side and bar side were at capacity. I quickly walked pass the waitresses and entered the bar area, which was completely packed. There were people eating dinner, watching sports, playing on the billiard table, and of course, sitting at and around the bar drinking and laughing. I walked around the bar trying to locate a table for myself, but they were all occupied. I stood there for a minute or so regretting my decision to conduct observations at the Pub at the beginning of a weekend. Finally, after a short awkward wait, a table opened up in the corner of the bar, so I rushed over and got a seat.
Story: “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck ( a story about the hardships of two diverse men and their friendship)
To give an illustration of what is meant in the book, Soar, Jeremiah is characterized as bold, showing his ability to take risks; confident and courageous. For example, Jeremiah is a heart transplant patient, and although his surgery went well, there are still things he cannot do. Dealing with his weak heart, it has given him a strong hearted spirit and to be positive about things than being negative. “Those people had strong hearts and vision. My heart's not strong, but my vision makes up for it” (27).
Throughout history there has been a common connection between dogs and humans. Whether you use your dog for work, to help make a living, or just for pure enjoyment dogs have been by our side. Dogs are used by police departments to help track down criminals or illegal substances. In cold places such as Alaska dogs are used to pull sleds as a means of transportation. The common theme with all of these is dogs bring people happiness by being playful, comforting, and give their owners a sense of responsibility.
A pearl is conventionally associated with wealth and prosperity. Like a philosopher’s stone, the pearl is believed to convert sorrows into happiness. Kino, a decent pearl diver and his wife, Juana, along with their son, Coyotito, are a poverty-stricken family until they discover “the greatest pearl in the world.” (p19) With hopes and dreams for themselves and their son’s future, Kino and Juana perceive this pearl to be a resolution for all of their troubles. After finding “the Pearl of the World,” (p22) Kino is plagued with vexation. His greed soon overcomes his benevolence and good intentions. The joint rapacity of Kino and other people precipitates misfortune and violence around him and eventually leads to Coyotito's death. The Pearl highlights
The implications of Pearl’s name are clear from the beginning. The image of a literal pearl invokes thoughts of purity, virginity, and innocence. The character
A fascinating and intriguing novel, The Pearl shares the story of a man named Kino, and how greed can affect his life forever. When Kino finds the “Pearl of the World”, it affects everyone, not just him. John Steinbeck, the author of this novel, uses intricate literary devices in order to give the reader the sense of greed that engulfed Kino and his surroundings. Literary devices such as foreshadowing, symbolism, and characterization all help this story come to life. Kino’s family, his personality, and his town, all changed when one pearl landed in Kino’s hands.
it very well from Kino's point of view, but I would like to know what the pearl
She doesn’t know this, but she changed my life. She was there for me when it seemed like no one else was. When most of my friends were dissolving around me and I just didn’t feel like I could do anything right, she was there, and she made everything seem okay. It didn’t matter that I was inevitably going to graduate with a GPA a tenth of a point lower than I wanted, or that my director told me that he was disappointed in me because I just didn’t seem focused lately, or that my other friends just weren’t talking to me anymore. It didn’t matter because she was there and she made me feel safe. She’s my best friend, and I love her and admire her for so many different reasons.
If you were given a million dollars, what would you do? Spend it in a short amount of time? Or save it responsibly for the future? Many would say the latter, confident that they will accomplish that. But for a few, it doesn’t turn out that way. In the book, The Pearl, a family, Kino, Juana and their child, Coyotito, go through various hardships after they have found a pearl, eventually losing everything they had loved. With three examples from the novel, I will explain what the pearl in the book symbolizes.
Standing on the balcony, I gazed at the darkened and starry sky above. Silence surrounded me as I took a glimpse at the deserted park before me. Memories bombarded my mind. As a young girl, the park was my favourite place to go. One cold winter’s night just like tonight as I looked upon the dark sky, I had decided to go for a walk. Wrapped up in my elegant scarlet red winter coat with gleaming black buttons descending down the front keeping away the winter chill. Wearing thick leggings as black as coal, leather boots lined with fur which kept my feet cozy.
captive by a sheath of frost, as were the glacial branches that scraped at my windows, begging to get in. It is indeed the coldest year I can remember, with winds like barbs that caught and pulled at my skin. People ceaselessly searched for warmth, but my family found that this year, the warmth was searching for us.
In The Pearl, I learned many lessons that will be able to help me throughout my life.. The theme of this book is that no matter how or rich you are, you should always have respect for others and most important yourself.
I brush my eyes awake, feeling the cold seeping in from my window. It’s 9 AM and it’s winter in Minnesota. Feeling sleepy, I stand up and go outside. I love the winter air. It always refreshes my mind and there’s just a cold bite to it that I enjoy. Coming back inside, I boot up my computer, hoping to enjoy it a little before heading out. The winter days swim together, phasing throughout my mind, and I fall asleep again, or I have woken up.
Friendships are one of the most important things you can get out of life. It’s something that everyone has to have because without it we would all go insane. Just think if no one talked to each other and we never made friends, this world would be a ticking time bomb. Studies say human need friendships and love to survive. So friendship is a big part of your life.
