Chapter 4: What is the Toulman Model and how does it work?
The Toulmin model is an effective way of getting to the how and why levels of the arguments that we read. It allows us to dissect and break down the argument into different parts so that we can make judgments on how well the different parts work together, and it also allows us to thoroughly analyze what we are reading.
The Toulmin model has six parts; the first three parts are present in every argument and are as follows: the claim, support, sub-claims, warrants, and qualifiers.
The claim is the most important point to the argument because it is used to identify the main points of the argument or what the author is trying to prove. It is usually written at the very beginning of the argument, but it is based upon who the audience is, and how they are trying to influence that particular audience. Our young society is faced with challenges ahead of them from bullying, to peer pressures, to poor employment opportunities, higher educational costs. The American dream is drifting more and more away from our younger generation and the prospect for a good education is still in our current modern day society.
Gwendolyn Brooks poem can be represented even in today’s society when a lot of youths are still dropping out of high school and higher schools of education, some choosing to go the straight and narrow past, but some are choosing that path that will inevitably lead them down the path to the very words that were represented in this poem and eventually it will lead to their own destruction and their deaths.
