Social networking is a concept that has been around for a long time than the Internet. People have always been able to work together in a team. Social networking has come to users using the internet to communicate in various different ways. This focuses on creating a ground for social networking and collaboration. Social networking is about everyone in the society where it has become self-sustaining and created further growth leading to human social interaction. A social networking site has allowed users to post their profiles and create personal details for exchanging information with other users (Weaver and Morrison, 2008) [1]. In early stages, social networks have become the most frequently used tools. “Facebook is currently the largest online social network. Its business model is based on the analysis of user data to display customized advertisements. However, the data collection induces possible privacy concerns which oppose perceived benefits. Information privacy concerns are important aspects for the intention not to use Facebook but it is outweighed by perceived usefulness”. (Becker and Pousttchi 2012, pg.187) [2].

Sports are always changing right before our eyes. There are more rules added to make sports safer for the athletes, and more people are watching sports than they did in the past. One thing is for certain: The role social media has played or is playing is influencing these changes and how sports teams (collegiate and professional) are now conducting most of their marketing online. As a part of a technologies such as customer relationship management (CRM) systems, social media can help sports teams reach a number of prospective fans and this is changing the way sports are being marketed. Many social media sites are taking over sports advertising and even broadcasting some sporting events. . All of this is influencing the way people gather at a stadium or an arena to watch their favorite team in person. This paper looks at these trends and their impact on sports marketing.
Social media allows people to keep up to date with their favourite elite athlete’s social media accounts. It allows others to keep up with the score, leader boards, and depending on the sport it allows people to keep up with other things. For example social media also allows people to view athletes Instagram, face book and titter pages. The topic is “is social media good for sport” and in this essay I will be discussing the disadvantages and the advantages of sport in social media.
In recent years, sports organizations and athletes are using social media more frequently as a tool to communicate with fans. Social media can be defined as the tools, platforms, and applications that enable consumers to connect, communicate, and collaborate with others (Williams & Chinn, 2010). Social media differs from other forms of communication such as radio, newspaper, and television because it supports user participation on a massive, collective scale. The contributions are also distributed among the participants to view, share, and improve (Williams & Chinn, 2010). For sports marketers, social media is the perfect tool to utilize when creating relationship-marketing campaigns. It’s also the perfect tool for athletes to use to brand themselves. There are several social media platforms that are available to these sports organizations and athletes. Facebook is used to provide information, post pictures and videos, and promote upcoming events. YouTube is an endless source of video highlights and bloopers. Twitter is a quicker source of information and requires less time and effort than the other social media options (Witkemper, Lim, & Waldburger, 2012). With positives also comes negatives, and social media unfortunately can have a negative effect among sports organizations and athletes. Because social media is still closing in on its beginning stages, professionals are still feeling out how social media works, economically and of course socially.
The use of social media in sports is a relatively new trend. Social media has enabled people to become more interactive with their favorite celebrities, athletes, and sports teams. Social media allows fan’s to keep up with their favorite teams with up to date news and it also helps the organization, specifically their marketing department. Sports teams have utilized Facebook and Twitter pages for their organizations in hopes of gaining revenue as well as the attention of their fans and casual fans. Social media is constantly evolving to keep up with the newest social trends and fads.
Today’s generation in America is widely affected by social media, but the real question that millions want the answer to is what is the real impact? “76% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as of July 2015, up from 26% in 2008. On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more. ” Social media has been the cause of countless problems, but also the solution to numerous issues which is why it is so hard to decide if it is more helpful than it is a burden or vise versa.
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
As mentioned above, the internet and social networking sites are critical in increasing connectivity, accessibility, and ultimately creating and enhancing social interaction. The internet and social networking sites have completely transformed and revolutionized how civilization socializes and communicates. In an instant, users can connect with old friends, make new connections, share photos and videos, among many other things. The internet has made it very quick and convenient to keep in touch with friends, family, and public figures. With the use of the internet and social networking sites, users stay well-informed of the latest news, markets, and events taking place locally and globally. The internet and social media sites give users the ability to enjoy activities that were very difficult if not impossible in the past. Internet use is the main catalyst in advancing today’s social interaction level.
