America is changing, the country that once was based on religious ideas is slowly becoming history, to the point that we can lose all traces of the America that was founded in 1776. As the days continue there is a continuous battle over the public possessing guns. A large portion believes and supports laws preventing civilians from owning military style rifles. With the growing support, these supports are trying to get guns all together out of the hands of people. With the recent mass shootings, Sandy Hook, Aurora, Colorado, and Virginia Tech, causing big support of these laws, many people fear that losing guns to the government will allow for criminals to do anything they want because civilians wont have a way to protect themselves. If guns are removed, the crime will increase, and there is more potential for foreign attacks to be held on U.S. soil. When America was founded in 1776 there were a few reasons behind the Revolution that freed America from Britain. The British wanted to remain in control of this small country because they began to see the potential of business starting there. As the Americans started to see this they realized they were going to have to fight their way to freedom. With growing taxes, growing hostility from british solders, and others laws being enforced, America had enough. But what was the line that was crossed that started this? Gun control. As Britain realized it would be very difficult to enforce laws on a very well armed populous with small amounts of solders, they began to take all the gun powder. This being that all the guns in this time were made to fire with gun powder. This also would begin their attempt to take ammo and guns too. Angered by this, americans revolted, the Boston Tea Party, a... ... middle of paper ... ...he common denominator in many of these mass shooting is someone who is a loner, dysfunctional and had some type of outside influence to do this, not honest gun owners. If the government continues to make laws against guns, the results could be bad. People will revolt, then we could have a civil war on our hands. Many people believe that the guns can and should be in the hands of the people who want them for protection and sport. Criminals will go to any lengths to get their weapons needed to perform a crime, that’s why they are criminals they break laws, they don’t follow them. The government is hoping to take control of these assault style weapons and keep them from the common people, but these weapons aren’t what crimes are being committed with. If guns are removed, the crime will increase, and there is more potential for foreign attacks to be held on U.S. soil.
Many gun supporters will say that more guns bring down the crime rate. These same believers will give facts stating that the more guns in a state, the less likely gun owners will use them. “The chances of innocent people being the victims of violent crime, including murder, decrease—not increase—when access to guns is made easier” (Luik). Luik emphasizes that guns will not make any innocent people killers, it will make crime and death rates go down. They argue that the states with the lowest crime rates are the same states that have a higher gun ownership rate than any other state.
The Ethics of Gun Control The phrase "Gun Control" means different things to different people. One bumper sticker states that "Gun Control means hitting your target." However one defines gun control, the mere mention of it brings controversy.
Right now the government has limited firearm purchasing only to people who pass certain steps. Gun control has risen as a controversial subject in the United States today. Many say gun control or banning of all firearms will help protect and make our country a better place. Reasons many are wanting to ban firearms are that the 2nd amendment is out dated and unjustified in this date and time. Writer Eugene Robinson states that “farmers wrote of “arms,” thinking about muskets and single shot pistols. They could not have foreseen modern rifles or high-capacity magazines.” Many agree with Mr. Robinson saying that back when the constitution was written they couldn’t have understood what was going to come in the future. Citizens also believe people have no reason to fight against intruders that come in their home that’s what the authorities are for. If people what to defend themselves why waste the money and time on having police? In this day and age why have weapons why not cut out all firearms and just be one happy country, it’s that simple, but is it really that simple? (“Assault Weapons Must Be Banned in
There are gun control laws to try and reduce the number of violent shootings that occur. They are trying to put limits on weapons that Americans can own. The government is trying to take our guns away mainly because of people that are criminally insane. Most of the people who commit crimes don’t even have the weapons legally. If the government takes away the rights of people who are allowed to have firearms in their possession, it will most definitely cause an outrage. Most people believe that the people should be more capable of maintain proper use of the firearms instead of having them all taken away. Taking the firearms from Americans away would cause a lot more problems than there actually are. The people will be upset with the government taking firearms away because of the horrible people who harm innocent people using them. So they will do anything to their capabilities to keep them.
Gun control is an issue that is constantly being debated. There are people who are pro gun control and those who believe gun control is unconstitutional to the citizens. Many political leaders and organizations have strong opinions on gun control, which keeps the gun control debate publicized. Gun control is limiting or taking the right of citizens to carry or purchase a gun. Guns are used for protecting the citizens by police officers and the military, as well as for many personal reasons like hunting and self-defense. There are times that guns are used for the wrong reasons like murder, or put in the wrong hands which lead to accidental deaths. Choosing a stand on gun control can be hard, but hearing both sides can help a person make a decision.
The debate over the right to bear arms according to the Second Amendment has been a hotly contested issue for many years in American history. The matter has been one of the most controversial issues in the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first; disputed between politicians on the liberal and conservative side along with issues such as abortion, capital punishment, and gay marriage. The Supreme Court has officially defined the controversial Second Amendment by stating that states have the right to maintain a militia separate from a federally controlled army (Gale Encyclopedia, pg. 155-162). However, “Courts have consistently held that the state and federal governments may lawfully regulate the sale, transfer, receipt, possession, and use of certain categories of firearms, as well as mandate who may and may not own a gun (Gale Encyclopedia, pg. 155-162).” Therefore, the issue is one that is extremely hard to clarify. Which side is right?
Take a look at the history of our country and the role guns have played in it. According to the second amendment gun ownership is perfectly legal and guaranteed as a right. There were and are good reasons for this, luckily they are still practiced today. Back in the day guns used to be for hunting and, on the occasion self defense. But when the colonists of this country had enough of British rule, they picked up there own personal guns and went to war and the British saw first hand how powerful the rough band of average American gun owners were. Our forefathers knew that the general population if armed would be key in winning the war. And it was.
It seems to be all over the news these days. The next big mass shooting has occurred and the politicians are clambering for stronger regulations. Meanwhile, the American public goes into panic mode and flocks to the nearest gun store to buy anything and everything that soon might be ripped from the market. Time and time again, this same series of events occurs. Questions about how to fix this likely weigh heavily on people 's minds but, there seems to be no solution. Some argue that registration of firearms, bans of certain firearms, and background checks can curb the violence. However, none of these things seem to fix the issue. That is simply because these “solutions” don’t work.
The government wants to put restrictions on owning certain firearms, like rifles. It is said that if the United States lowers the amount of guns owned by civilians than the rate of firearm based crimes will be reduced. This cannot be any further from the truth, a study that was published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy proves that countries with very strict gun control laws have many more crimes than countries with little to no gun control regulations. (Little) Just to further support this theory; in the United States people are 80 times more likely to use a gun to prevent a crime than to commit one. (Little) If strict gun control laws are implemented than an increase in crime and murders will most likely be the consequence. One of the scariest views about gun control is that all nations who have slaughtered their own citizens first disarmed them. Adolf Hitler once said “To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.” (Quotes) In no way is that saying that the citizens of the United States will soon be killed by their own g...
Gun control laws are getting stricter and stricter as time goes on. The first gun control law was “passed by Congress in 1927 when it outlawed the mailing of firearms" (Thomas16). This law meant that all concealable firearms could not be shipped through the mail. The reason why was guns were able to be bought and traded through the post office. suddenly there was a consontration on gun control this was due to the fact that "after the assassination attempt on FDR’s life the major concern of gun control was brought up" (Thomas 15). Because many American’s didn’t want criminals to be allowed to purchase guns, gun laws got stricter. This led to the firearms act of 1934. "The firearms act of 1934 imposed a $200 tax on full autos and sawed-off shotguns. These laws also made people go through FBI background checks to obtain these weapons" (Thomas 16). Full autos are firearms that will continue to fire as long as the trigger is held down. Sawed-off shot guns are shot guns that have extremely short barrels allowing them to be concealed.
No matter if the government enacts more gun control laws or not, guns will always find their way in to the wrong hands. If the government takes away all guns then who 's not to say it won 't lead to a tyrannical government that turns on the masses. You also have a right to protect yourself and property with any weapon you chose especially if own your guns legally. Gun control will decide on what type of firearms a person can have. If a person obtains their firearms legally then why should they have to suffer because of a couple bad people 's actions? With gun control, how will people then be able to form a militia and stop foreign troops from invading and taking over the country God forbid the day ever comes. We 'll need heavy weaponry to fight back.
Supporters on this side say that without guns in our system, less homicides will happen and shooters will have a harder time finding weapons to use. This perspective does deliver a thought-provoking fight; according to chicagotribune.com, from January 1st, 2015- October 8, 2015, over 2,360 people were victims of shooting in Chicago and in an article from CNN.com, in Australia, a country where guns are banned, the risk of being killed by a gunshot has dropped over 50% since a tight gun control laws were established. Although a ban on guns seems like a great decision, there are many downfalls that will come with this policy. On Washingtonpost.com, a Gallop Poll was done and showed that 51% of people felt safer in homes with a gun. If guns became banned, the percentage would drop, and criminals, like rapists or burglars would have more motivation to commit crimes. In Australia, a country with extremely tight gun control, the rate of sexual assaults is 28.6% and in America, a country with loose gun control, the rate is 27.3%, so it is obvious that if America were to ban guns, the rate would increase. Another repercussion that results in taking away guns is actually more violence happening. According to politifact.com, in 1976, Washington DC required for all new handguns at home to be stored unloaded and disassembled at home. This led criminals into committing more crimes because they knew that the
To many guns are big and bad scary thing, but they are a constitutional right and nobody can fear a right. We as a society do not teach the common public about Gun safety and use and I feel we should incorporate gun safety classes in school to teach children at a young age about them. We can never not have guns so might as well teach people how to deal with them and not to fear them. We have ------ million guns in just the united states owned by citizens. I know that many want to ban the use and sale of firearms but it just cannot be done. Firearms were given a right to us by the government to protect our own family, if the they ever were to go corrupt. Nearly have of potential shootings are stopped by someone with a firearm for self defense
Firearms are a big thing in America. It is estimated that there are 270 million firearms in America, that is about 89 firearms per 100 citizens. If this is compared to a country like Switzerland, that only has around 49 firearms per 100 citizens, America has nearly double the amount per 100 citizens. A firearm is a portable gun that launches one or more projectiles, so in short a gun. In America, there are firearm laws that are usually different in each separate state but, there are general firearm control laws in America. These firearm control laws have been brought to light in the past few years after a sudden rise in firearm-related terrorist attacks. It raises questions like if firearms were reduced or even banned would this have happened and even would firearm crime as a whole be reduced?
Guns help save more lives than they take and help prevent more injuries than they inflict. Gun Owners of America presents an interesting statistic in which it shows that guns are used two and a half million times every year. That means that by the time you finish reading this paper approximately 25 people will have used guns to help defend themselves, and two of those people will have been women protecting themselves from sexual assault (Gun Owners of America, NA)! Therefore, taking away our constitutional right to carry guns will consequently take away our means of protecting
