Every year millions of people die from cancer or cancer related complications. A career in oncology allows one the opportunity to specialize in the care, treatment, and research to help those with this devastating disease. Cancer is a complicated disease that causes severe illness. The complications from the disease process results in death around the world. Oncologists’ works together with other medical team members in helping patients through cancer treatment live with the disease or die with dignity.
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal blood cells rapidly multiply causing significant medical complications that often results in death (DeVita). When the initial cancer diagnosis is discussed with the patient and family, the news is devastating. The family has to do the best they can to get their loved ones mind off the fact that they could die. “I wanted to always be a doctor to help people with cancer deal with the disease and, if I can’t cure them, them help, I assist them to die with dignity” (Soni). Cancer research continues to expand and has a wealth of new technologies for cancer imaging and tumor treatment. This extensive ongoing research seeks a cure for this devastating disease. The research resulting in a cure for cancer would help reduce health care cost that is rising in the face of a struggling American economy (Healthcare Salaries). Another complex part of cancer treatment is the psychosocial support for cancer patients. This intervention requires a team approach in treating the physical and emotional needs of the patient (Devita). At this day in age we are constantly trying to improve the field of medicine in any way that we possibly can. We cherish every birthday and continually try to prolong life. Not only through every field of medicine, especially in terms of cancer. The American Cancer Society is “the official sponsor of birthdays” and is making leaps and bounds in the types of care that cancer patients receive. One of these many breakthroughs is the practice of Stereotactic (Body) Radiotherapy or S(B)RT. SBRT and other radiation therapies have the ability to greatly improve the way that we treat the issue of cancer and the variation of treatment options; however, they have raised the concerns of long term effects from radiation and cost-effectiveness. As research has begun to show, radiation therapies are having great success in curing cancer.

There are many benefits being a pediatric oncologists such as, getting to work with children all day. Also helping those children beat their cancer. The salary may also be a nice reward. There is also downfalls being pediatric oncologist. There is a longer process when becoming a pediatric oncologists. Also seeing the kids who are struggling fight against cancer. There are also student loans to pay off.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the diagnosis and staging of cancer, complications of cancer, the side effects of the cancer treatment, and methods to lessen the physical and psychological effects of cancer.
Cancer. The word by itself can conjure images of severely ill and frail people attached to IV medications and chemotherapy drugs as they cling to life in a hospital bed. Other illustrations and pictures depict unrecognizable, misshaped organs affected by abnormal cells that grow out of control, spread, and invade other parts of the body. Cancer studies show that close to one-half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer during their lives. Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer. As patients are newly diagnosed with their specific type of cancer, whether it be breast, lung, prostate, skin, or blood cancer, etc., each patient has to consider what will happen with their future health care plan and who will be involved in their long journey from treatment to recovery. Once diagnosed, cancer patients become the focal point and the center of all activity in terms of care but cancer not only physically invades the patient’s body and well-being, it goes beyond the patient and significantly affects the emotional stability and support from from their loved ones and caregivers. Based on the insidious nature of cancer and typically late detection of malignant diseases, family members (either spouses, children, parents, other relatives, and friends) often become the patient's main caregiver. These caregivers, also known as informal caregivers, provide the cancer patient with the majority of the support outside of the medical facility or hospital environment and become the primary person to provide various types of assistance. A cancer diagnosis can significantly change your life and the lives of your family in various ways. Hearing the news “you’ve been diagnosed with cancer” leave patients and their families in a whirlwind of emotions. The initial shock of this diagnosis leaves feelings of sadness, denial, frustration, confusion, fear, anger, and often times the “why me?” feeling. Thoughts start going through your head regarding how this affects yourself, your family, and your everyday life.
Isn’t it overwhelming to consider the fact that approximately one in eight deaths in the world are due to cancer? To make this more comprehensible, the number of deaths caused by cancer is greater than caused by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Along with the idea that this disease does not have a definite cure is a mind-staggering concept to grasp. If not caught in time, cancer means guaranteed death. These types of thoughts were floating around my head when my mother had told me that my father had mouth cancer.

There are numerous reasons as to why I want to pursue my dream of becoming a radiation therapist. The most important reason is because I love to help other people overcome any problem they are facing. However saving a patient’s life through radiation would be even more amazing. Not to mention, after obtaining the proper education, the salary I receive will be fairly high. Cancer has recently become a part of many families, including my own. I see what a few of my family members are going through and having to struggle with every single day in order to live to see another day, The struggles that they go through have opened my mind in many ways, I wish I was the one that they could come to for a chance of survival, but I can’t, so in order for me to help cancer patients fight for their lives, I will obtain the proper education, licenses, and possess the numerous skills needed by a radiation therapist..

In this paper we will be discussing cancer and how a holistic approach may be a more viable alternative to traditional therapies, in treating the whole patient.
