Jimi Hendricks, an extraordinary guitarist who was born November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington. Hendrix was one of the most influential musicians in the music world. He took music places that no one could. Jimi Hendrix was one of the most exciting and creative guitar players ever. He mixed Blues and Rock & Roll together to create some of the utmost unique music ever played. While Hendricks was only famous for four years, the impact he left on the music industry would last a lifetime. Hendricks style was like no other musicians; he had shocking guitar techniques, such as playing with his teeth, behind his back, and without touching the strings, all were talents that surprised his audiences, and contributed to his reputation as an artist. Amazingly, he also played his Fender Stratocaster upside down to accommodate his left-hand.
Hendricks love for playing a guitar started early as a child, growing up he used a broom to show his interest in playing the guitar. It was not long after his father recognized his love for playing and so he went out and bought Hendricks a guitar. After going to see Elvis in concert he was even more motivated, Hendricks career actually started off by touring with Blues, Rhythm and Blues bands in the South long before becoming famous. He also enrolled in the military and struggled to find himself. Due to an injury, that Hendricks sustained while in the military he was medically discharged which allowed him to work on his music career even more. Hiram “Hank” Williams, third child of Lon and Lillie Williams, was born on September 17, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama near Georgiana. Hank was raised by his mother because his father was in a veteran’s hospital most of his childhood. Hank’s childhood was shaped by a spinal condition called spina bifida so he could not play sports or do regular activities with the other children. Perhaps his inability to do normal activities sparked his interest in music. Hank got his first guitar at eight years old (Harden).
Jerry Garcia’s life was filled with wonderful things, many of which he never expected in the first place. After an almost fatal heroin overdose in 1986, “ Garcia philosophically stated, ‘ I’m 45 years old, I’m ready for anything, I didn’t even plan on living this long so all this shit is just add-on stuff.’ ” (“Garcia”) This attitude shows why Garcia did all of the things he did and even how some of them came about. Garcia, who “functioned as the preeminent pied piper of the rock era,” led a life of great artistic ability which he used in many ways(“Grateful Dead_ Rockhall”).
After leaving the army, Hendrix began working as a session guitarist under the persona “Jimmy James.” Hendrix landed multiple gigs with big acts, such as Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, and the Isley Brothers just to name a few. Hendrix thereafter formed his own band, “Jimmy James and the Blues Flames”, changing his role from backup guitarist to the spotlight of lead guitar. Throughout 1965 and 1966, his band played at different venues in Greenwich Village, at one point, meeting and conversing with “Animals’” bassist Chas Chandler, who later signed Hendrix to an agreement to form a new band in London. First changing Hendrix’s persona to “Jimi,” Chandler assembled Hendrix, drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding to form the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which quickly became the talk of London in the fall of 1966. The first single released by The Experience, “Hey Joe,” sat in the UK charts for ten weeks, capping out at No. 6. “Hey Joe” was quickly followed by the release of their first full-length album, “Are You Experienced,” an artistic, psychedelic compilation of music fueled by voices of a generation. “Are You Experienced” remains one of the best-selling albums of all time, featuring hits like “Purple Haze,” and “Foxy Lady”.
