Gilbert Keith Chesterton, more often referred to as just G.K., was born the son, grandson, and great-grandson, of house agents, or men who sold homes for a living. He was born in London, 1874, and was raised in a healthy, Christian home, which led to his clear worldview. He was a very intimidating man, at 6' 4" and weighing 300 pounds. Three aspects are attributed to Chesterton: he was a journalist, an author, and a man of great influence. At first, Chesterton had aspired to become an artist, so never went to college, but instead attended Slade Art School. However, he quickly realized that he would not be able to sustain himself as an artist. Instead, he looked for another means of work that he could still find enjoyment in, and he found it in writing. “...he (Chesterton) attended lectures on English literature at University College. A fellow student whose family controlled the publishing firm of Hodder & Stoughton gave him some art books to review in the firm’s monthly, The Boohman (Gilbert).” After writing for his friend and a couple of other newspapers, Chesterton landed a job at the Liberal based The Speaker, beginning his work as a professional journalist. From his first article to his death, Chesterton was constantly at work writing articles, whether it be for the newspaper he worked for, or the one his brother later owned. According to Dale Ahlquist, president and cofounder of the American Chesterton Society, “... He considered himself primarily a journalist. He wrote over 4000 newspaper essays, including 30 years worth of weekly columns for the Illustrated London News, and 13 years of weekly columns for the Daily News.” This large portion of his work is what initially made him famous, because many came to respect... ... middle of paper ... ...dom of a man from the early 20th century can cross the span of time and and instill in me the same knowledge and wisdom, here in the early 21st century. T.S. Eliot, another one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century, once said of Chesterton, “He did more, I think, than any man of his time...to maintain the existence of the important minority in the modern world.” Chesterton’s heart was always with the minority, and to this day, his words are fighting for those who do not have a voice. Different types of literature have been part of America since the 1630’s and the varieties of literature still exist to this day. Frederick Douglass’s work and speeches during his lifetime caught the attention of many people in the United States, including slave owners themselves. Douglass has not only changed American literature, he has also inspired many other writers and speakers to seek freedom of expression for themselves. Even though he had a rough childhood because he was a slave, Douglass found ways to make the most of it. Fortunately it was because he had a nice and caring owner who taught him to read and write. Furthermore, because he had a warmhearted owner, he was able to express himself through his work to many different people of his time. Douglass’s works and speeches remain of great impact, and continue to influence and inspire many people in literature to this day. He influenced many people during his travels to Northern free states and overseas to England and Ireland where he explained and changed their mindset of the cruelty of slavery, which ultimately lead to the adjustment by the people to understand the reality of slavery.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was a philosopher and transcendentalist of the 19th century, composing controversial, philosophical and religious essays in order to inform people. Emerson was a strong influence on other personalities of his time, including American figures such as; “Henry Thoreau” and “Walt Whitman”. “Emerson’s father (William Emerson) influenced the good taste of Emerson’s essays due to he was a man of the church.” William died because of a stomach cancer just two weeks before Ralph Waldo fulfilled eight years old. This death leads the family to an edge of poverty and a life of limited luxuries. That’s the point when Emerson’s career began. “His mother managed so that all of her children could get accepted into Harvard University with scholarships.” There was Ralph's stop when he was only fourteen years old. In Harvard College he was an apprentice under the president of the constitution. The task was to accuse his colleagues in criminal activity letting the ‘faculty’ know. “Whenever my environment had failed to support or nourish me, I had clutched at books...” ― Richard Wright, Black Boy this is a quote from the famous Richard Wright an African American author. This quote means that no matter what was placed in his way or what he lacked that others had he hung on to what he had and did what he could. And the more he read about the world, the more he longed to see it and make a permanent break from the Jim Crow South. "I want my life to count for something," he told a friend. Richard Wright wanted to make a difference in the world and a difference he did make. Richard Wright was an important figure in American History because he stood astride the midsection of his time period as a battering ram, paving the way for many black writers who followed him, these writers were Ralph Ellison, Chester Himes, James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lorraine Hansberry, John Williams. In some ways he helped change the American society.

As every well-read person knows, the background in which you grow up plays a huge role in how you write and your opinions. Fuller grew up with a very strict education, learning multiple classic languages before she was eight years old. Fern grew up with writers all throughout her family and had a traditional education and saw first hand the iniquities of what hard-working had to contend with. Through close analysis of their work, a reader can quickly find the connections between their tone, style, content, and purpose and their history of their lives and their educational upbringing.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was one of the greatest English authors ever to live. He wrote many essays and novels. He had much time to do this because he was a large man and could not move around easily. In Gilbert's essay, "In Lying in Bed" his deep understanding of humanity clearly evident. He speaks informally and rambles like the common speaker does. In my analysis I will describe and explain the central themes of Chesterton's essay.
