Gun Control is when you keep firearms plus guns away from people. Many people think that gun control is right because they think keeping people away from guns will reduce the amount of deaths each year. They also think that guns cause many of the deaths that had been committed each year. Also when ever people hear the word gun, the thoughts are of violence and negativity. Many people, myself included think gun control is wrong because we know that it is not necessary, since we know that guns were not involved in many of the deaths caused each year. While many other people disagree and think it is good because of the safety for people. In this essay I will tell you why gun control is unnecessary and why there shouldn?t be any gun control at all. There have been many gun control laws established throughout the U.S., but they vary from state to state. For example, in Colorado you can purchase any type of gun: handgun, machine gun, shotgun, rifle, automatic rifle, etc. at the age of 18, while in other places you would need a hunting license.1 I think this is unfair because when I?m at the age of 18 I would want to buy a gun, but I can?t because I?m living in California and another 18 year old could in Colorado. Also, another example is that in some states, they allow citizens to carry concealed weapons, while in other states citizens can?t. I don?t think this is fair at all because I think they should make laws that suits the whole U.S., and not make different laws in different states. Another reason that makes me think that they shouldn?t have different gun control laws in different places is because I knew a person that buys guns in New York, and some how got them over here and sells them to people by tripling the price. I have asked him how he got them over here, but he never told me how he did it. He told me that he has done this for many years until one time he got caught when he was selling them and was jailed for 6 or 7 months. If gun control laws were applied the same in every place he could of never have gotten the guns. This also means that criminals could have done the same thing that my friend had done, but not sell the guns but use them to do bad things.
America is the most well armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Hence, gun control is a frequently discussed controversial topic in American politics.
The issues of gun control are the subject of much controversy. In the article “The Killer Who Supports Gun Control” by Nicholas D. Kristof (2013), he argues that a strong gun control will yield fewer deaths. Kristof summarizes how the gun itself and the person are responsible for deaths, in order to show how dangerous the combination of the two is.
People against gun control feel that it is a violation of the Constitution to control the sale and distribution and the registration of guns and gun owners (Band, The Editorial 2) . But it is necessary for there to be certain limits on the way that firearms are handled in this country because of the homicide rate involving guns, and because of the violence created by criminals using guns. If gun control legislation were to go through; there would be a significant decline in gun related crimes and fatalities (Sowell 2). Gun control should be control in this society, and laws should be enforced. Gun violence, protection, and safety and fall into this category. The laws should protect people’s safety and also people’s self-defense. I do believe that gun control has a big impact on society because of: gun violence, gun laws, and people’s protection (Sowell
While many people believe there should be more gun control and the possibility of banning guns all together, I believe the gun control laws should not be changed. Although there are many reasons that may persuade people to choose to ban guns, I believe that there are several other reasons that lead to all the tragedies with guns in America. Banning guns is not an answer the gun problem in America, there are a few other things that could be done to stop gun violence. In this essay I will tell about why I believe gun control laws should not be changed.
Gun control is a problem that is ever growing. It occurs all over the world knowing no limits or boundaries. As of today, the United States of America is experiencing lots of problems with gun control. The definition of gun control is any law or policy that is based upon restricting or limiting anything involving firearms. This includes, but is not limited to possession of firearms, production, shipment, sale and even use of firearms. Currently there are quite a few gun control laws in place. Each country has its own around the world, with the United Kingdom being the strictest of anybody in regards to the possession of guns. The United States of America on the other had is one of the countries with the most lenient gun control laws. However, in the past 10 years gun control laws have changed drastically in the United States. It has also become one of the most talked about, and controversial topics, in today’s society. It is my belief that gun control will hurt us more than help.
Gun control is an issue that has been debated by Americans since the 1960’s (Dolan 1). The debate questions the right of Americans to bear arms, this including, handguns, shotguns, and rifles. Some say a simple restriction of these arms is in order while some think they should be banned altogether (Dolan 1). Both sides hold strong opinions often causing conflict in the matter and confusion among the citizens of the United States.
Some people believe that guns should be heavily regulated. In fact, According to Handgun Control ¨laws such as the Brady Act, which requires background checks on gun buyers, have prevented four hundred thousand felons and other prohibited purchasers from buying handguns.” These laws have done their job. This system still has its flaws. They are trying to fix a system that is not broken and usually when someone tries to fix something that is not broken they break it. Also, when there are new laws for gun
Gun control laws should be abolished. Gun control laws are almost useless. “It will not be the local police who will be out making sure that federal regulations are enforced” (Obama). So, almost no one will be enforcing this law. As one state trooper says “Congress is good at making pointless laws” (Obama). There are guns in about 1/3 of every American household, and 240 million guns in circulation (Lee).
Gun laws can be a bad thing. I believe that gun control laws do not prevent crime, gun ownership does. What I mean by this is that
Car crashes kill over 32,885 people, guns kill 31,672 people. The issue is that the
The fact of the matter is that it is already illegal to own an assault rifle; an assault rifle is defined as a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use, which is not what an AR-15 is. The AR-15 rifle is a semi-automatic rifle meant for the common citizen to use in sport shooting, hunting, and to keep unwanted things off of one’s property, such as coyotes and other animals. Semi-automatic firearms are not fully-automatic military machine guns. Gun control supporters say that semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 are “military-style assault weapons” designed for war on battlefields. The military uses fully-automatic rifles, which are regulated as machine guns by the National Firearms Act of 1934. A fully-automatic firearm
5 decades ago when we were able to buy guns, the number of suicides committed were less than 2,000. The people that usually kill themselves are not particularly happy with the way they live. These citizens look for the easy way out. Unless it is an accident that either got out of proportion. Back in the mid-1900’s there wasn’t a lot of killing them with their own gun. You would kill or get killed for your rights to be free and many more arguments you could make along with this passage.
Today, I picked a local news for What’s in the news II from The Washington Post. There was not a single day that I watch the news without any report of gun-related news. Conversely, this is relevant to what we’ve been covering because it deals with domestic (government) policy, (gun law: licenses, criminal and civil penalties) This is important because some schools are disrupting their classes to walk outside in protest against gun violence. Although I’m not against these protests, we too, shouldn’t disregard other facts behind this gun violence.
Some people think that owning a gun is unconstitutional, but if your life was on the line then would you think its constitutional? My grandmother lives in a city where being robbed is something everyone should be used to by now, but while some citizens were being robbed their lives were also taken. Her 2 story house was robbed 4 years ago and her life was threatened , she lives alone and is physically weak. The man who attempted to rob her pointed a gun 6 feet away from her head and told her to give him all of her valuables. If she didn't take her licensed gun and shot him in the arm, her life would have been taken. I believe that private gun ownership is constitutional and helps save lives.
On the topic of gun ownership in the United States of America, I propose that carrying guns must be encouraged for civilian use after sufficient background checks and training. After reading five articles by the Conservative columnist Kevin McCullagh, it is evident that he also backs my claim, as he frequently discusses the impacts of guns in current events and wishes to protect the United States from gun violence with the principle of “mutually assured destruction. The fundamental issues with gun ownership are that forms of violence differ across countries and that gun violence is not exclusively caused by one issue. Countries such as Japan have no gun ownership opportunities and yet a high rate of violence while Switzerland has a low rate of violence and prevalent gun ownership. I believe that this discrepancy is caused by differently regulated gun laws, violence exposure in media and culture, and mental health care. What McCullagh states in his
