In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students. After I changed my major, I discovered that biology students were, understandably, focused on getting into medical school. I managed to come across a classmate, named Adriana, who introduced me to optometry. To be honest, I was not thinking about optometry. Most students who plan to apply to medical school major in biology. Adriana, however, held a different view, and that caught my attention. In addition, she has been working at an optometry office for quite sometime. I began to show interest in the optometry field, and I started to consult her and pulling information from her about the field. Dr. Peterson showed me that it is important to understand how to deal with insurance companies, and how important it is to follow-up with paper works because there will be times one is required to run the front desk when the receptionist is not available. At Eye Maxx I also learned how to take the distance between the pupils using the pupilometer and how to manually measure it with the ruler. I was given the opportunity to take patients PD, which excited me as I felt that gratifying feeling that I was hoping to obtain in my career. I am aware of the challeneges and demands that the field of optometry holds, however, I am committed to becoming an optometrist. I am quite passionate about this field, and my desire in this field has only been strengthened through my experiences. It is for these reasons that I would like to pursure a D.O.
As a student who is both fascinated with science and desires a career that is dedicated to improving people’s lives, the profession of optometry is a natural fit for me. Wanting to learn more about the profession, I began shadowing several optometrists throughout my time in high school and college. I shadowed in various settings, including two retail chain stores, an ophthalmology office, and a private practice. My goal was to soak up everything about the experience, learning as much as I could from the optometrists as they interacted with patients and assessed their ocular health. I was amazed at how much I was able to learn just from observing other optometrists! One of the most memorable experiences I had while shadowing was when a patient came in with shingles, which the optometrist, Dr. Chelsey Clemens, confirmed was spreading onto her cornea. I know that I want to have a career in the medical field, so to prepare for that I have taken many high school science classes, including biology, chemistry 1 and 2, and physics. I’ve also taken many math classes, English 101 and 102 though Grand Rapids Community College and heath classes through Grand Valley State University. These classes have helped prepare me for a medical degree by exposing me to math, science, and college level classes; all of which are particularly important when it comes to trying to receive a medical degree.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.

My passion for optometry remains unfettered from negativity because I have seen the power of what it can do and the lives it can impact. I am highly aware of the prestigious reputation of your optometry program, and the work that your faculty is involved in. My fervor for optometry is unparalleled, and I want to affect change in the most positive way I can, which is changing the culture we live in. Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote, "The health of the eye seems to demand a horizon. We are never tired, so long as we can see far enough." From what I will accomplish in my life, I will see above the horizon, and give others the same vision. The career I chose to write about is nursing because since I was a little girl I have always felt antipathy taking care of people and learning about the human anatomy. I was on a mission everyday trying to decrypt what type of life I should lead, my mind was always adopting new identities but my options were limitless. I knew I was an individual and since we all do not look the same our purposes can not be either. Pursuing a nursing career was not a plan, throughout my developing years I fathomed the thought of being in the medical field because it is science based and it is persistently evolving which would give me constant interest. My strong passion for science granted me the opportunity of being placed in the STEP program (Science Training Education Program) at SUNY Old Westbury.
Dr. Anderson was successfully able to see a large number of patients per day, largely in part due to the help of staff members. Technicians perform pretesting on patients (including visual acuity testing and Optos imaging) and then direct patients to seats in the hall. This patient flow opens more chairs in the waiting room/dispensary and ensures that patients are ready to be seen by the doctor at the time of their appointment. Unfortunately, these chairs are immediately outside of the exam room, which necessitates exam room doors be completely shut for privacy. Overall, this process was a creative way of increasing the number of exams per day without increasing the number of exam lanes needed. Additional practice management advice gained was Dr. Anderson’s opinion on instrument importance and productivity. New optometry graduates must prioritize purchases due to large amounts of student debt and limited funding. Interestingly, Dr. Anderson advocated that the Optos retinal imaging instrument was his favorite and most profitable instrument. He explained that this technology provides a wow factor for patients, while also cutting down on exam time. For non-medical, routine exams, the retinal imaging allows for a complete exam without dilation (an added bonus for patients as well!). Furthermore I had the chance to sit in with the optometrist during his appointments and witness how he carried out a range of procedures including eye tests and contact lens fittings. During this time I figured out that communication skills are vital for this role to achieve a strong relationship with patients. This exceptionally beneficial experience further fuelled my interest in optometry. Currently I am employed and work at a large respected company that is Manchester United. I have gained several personal skills from working as a kiosk assistant in this job. My role requires the utmost professionalism and a positive attitude along with the ability to adapt to different working environments, as well as working successfully in a team. In my post secondary studies, many people are interested in what I want to do after I graduate and where I want to go in life. It is far rarer to have people ask the question of why. Why do I want to pursue a career in the medical field? Why do I want to spend my life helping people? Why do I want to attend the nursing program at Clarkson? My answer to the big question of why is not a simple one-faceted answer. I want to be a nurse for a myriad of reasons. In this reflection, I will touch on my long-lasting love for a career in medicine, my experience in school that solidified my desire to become a nurse, and the path that led me to apply to Clarkson College.
It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. Nursing is one of the highly demanding careers that bring new challenges every day and it comes with various rewards and a real sense of job satisfaction. As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school.
