The Impact of the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club on the City of Montreal
A sports team is vital to a large city such as Montreal. A sports team may have
positive or negative impacts on a city. The team that will be focused on is the Montreal
Canadiens. Despite the poor seasons that the team has recently endured, the Montreal
Canadiens are still one of the most winningest franchises in all of sports. The team’s long
history as a winning organization has made the city of Montreal reputable. For my
research, the three disciplines that will be focused on are sociology, geography, and
economics. These disciplines are very much evident and important to my research topic,
that being, the importance the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club for the City of Montreal.
With the use of sources related to my topic, one will be able to grasp the overall context
of my research. The direct question that my research intends to answer is; how has the
Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club impacted the City of Montreal as a whole?
Literature Review
The discipline of sociology studies groups of people in a specific area. In this
case, the people we will focus on are the players playing for the Montreal Canadiens
hockey team and the fans that support the team. After viewing a video on the Montreal
Canadiens during the 1988-1989 season (Fisher 1989), the discipline of sociology is very
much evident in this video. The video takes an in depth viewing of the team during the
1988-1989 season. It looks at the ups and downs the team faced during this particular
season and how the Montreal Canadiens have over come obstacles.
During the 1988-1989 season, the Canadiens advanced to the Stanley Cup final
where they lost to the Calgary Flames in six games. A few years earlier, in 1986, the
Canadiens beat those same Calgary Flames to win their twenty-third Stanley Cup. The
player that led the Canadiens during the 1988-1989 season was none other than
goaltender Patrick Roy. The pressures that were placed on the shoulders’ of Roy were
unbelievable. This pressure came from fans and media alike. The fact he was a French-
Canadian that grew up cheering for the Canadiens, did not help either. As Patrick said in
the video, “Hockey in Montreal is not a sport, it’s a religion.” Also interviewed was

... I composed my questionnaire around my research question. The
results of my fieldwork take into account the three disciplines that my literature review is
based on, that being, sociology, geography, and economics. From the answer(s) that was
derived from my fieldwork, the impact the Montreal Canadiens has on the city of
Montreal as a whole is positive.
Conclusion
To explain the importance a sports team has on a city, a new avenue for future
research would be the traveling to a city that lost a professional sports team and research
the impact it had on places such as Winnipeg and Quebec, where the Winnipeg Jets and
the Quebec Nordiques used to play respectfully. Economically, jobs are created within
and around the team and city, which geographically is the reason why businesses are set
up where they are, and sociologically, people come together in the supporting of their
team. These three disciplines are lost with losing of a professional sports team. A sports
team is vital to a large city such as Montreal. To conclude this report, the Montreal
Canadiens Hockey Club has a positive impact on the city of Montreal as a whole.

The most memorable moment in hockey history came thirty-four years ago with the 1980 Miracle on Ice. The Americans defeating the dominant Soviet team at the Olympics was not only an important triumph for USA Hockey, but for the entire nation. Contrary to popular belief, the underdog win was not only the result of a miracle; it was also the result of a hard-working team led by Coach Herb Brooks. With increasingly negative views on the position of the United States in the Cold War, the Miracle on Ice and the gold medal win lifted the spirits of the nation and brought hockey into the American spotlight.

Ice hockey is a sport that is played and loved all around the world. The hockey culture is like no other. I have firsthand experience with this culture and it’s different from many things. Hockey gets the reputation as a brutal sport with a bunch of goons trying to kill each other, but most people don’t get to see on the other side. Hockey brings people together whether you are a different race, have different beliefs, or a different gender it’s like one big happy family. Terrence and Jordin Tootoo grew up in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, in Canada’s arctic region. They were like other Inuit children in Rankin Inlet in many respects: They were brought up to respect the customs of their people and they enjoyed the resources the land around them provided- they learned to hunt and fish for food like the others. However, the brothers were also different from their peers in one main respect- they were blessed with a love for the game of hockey, and also with extraordinary amounts of talent which would enable them to leave their native community to pursue the dream of professional hockey. While the brothers were growing up they were inseparable; however, after leaving Rankin Inlet to pursue the professional game their respective careers took strikingly different paths. Jordin’s journey took him to the top- he was drafted into the National Hockey League and signed a lucrative contract with the Nashville Predators. However, Terrence’s road to the professional ranks was filled with hardship and tragedy, ultimately resulting in his suicide in August of 2002. The contrasting paths taken by the brothers is an illustration of how professional sporting careers can have varying impacts on the lives of Native American and Canadian athletes and their communities. In the following few paragraphs I will outline the history of Native Americans and Canadians in sports. I will examine how successful Native athletes are able to help their communities, both financially and by serving as role models for younger Natives. Also, I will argue that their still exist barriers and challenges to Native athletes that do not confront other athletes. For example, Native athletes are often placed under increased scrutiny because of their positions as role models. I will conclude by commenting on how Native athletes fit into pro sports today, and speculate on what can be done to increase the amount of success enjoyed by Natives.

According to the Food Marketing Institute’s website, in the year 2012 there were thirty-seven thousand and fifty-three companies in this trade which puts Publix very high on shopper’s lists. Being employee owned is one of the characteristics current workers contribute to the firm’s success. Focusing on the well-being and progress of their team members has given them a sought after job pool.
Hockey, by nature, is known as a tough and dangerous sport. It is a game that places grown men on thin pieces of steel chasing a rubber puck across frozen water. As such, the game of hockey is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports in the world. Hockey is also the only team sport that allows opposing teammates to square off in a physical fighting match within the game. In recent years, however, the allowance of fighting has become a controversial issue. Those who oppose fighting point out that there has been injury and even deaths to hockey players as a result of fights. People who oppose the allowance of fighting within the game also point out that fighting may send messages to young fans
In 1980, there were 10,490 hockey teams in the United States. In 1990, the total was 14,969. The game really took off after this. By 1997, U.S.A Hockey had registered 29,479 teams and 449,168 players. Players are still inspired to this day by the feat. Herb Brooks was what held the team together. He is the reason the Americans won against the “unbeatable” Soviets.

Injuries impact the school life, profession, and the approach to society of a player. It slows down the natural ability of one to obtain and accomplish their aspirations in life, such as academics achievements or relationship goals (Dr. Echlin, 2014). Physicality and toughness are important factors in sports, especially in hockey. In a sport that is nearing a century old, who dare prohibit the originality of it? But with prolific past injuries on players caused by malicious hits, such as Todd Bertuzzi’s infamous check on Steve Moore in ’04 or superstar Sidney Crosby’s year-long concussion in ’10-11, speculation has started to gather regarding the complete exertion of violence in the NHL. When taking steps to analyze and apply intervention strategies for falls, we must examine the factors that cause these occurrences. There are numerous reasons that falls occur, such as intrinsic and or extrinsic risk factors. Intrinsic risk factors for falls may be due to changes that are part of the normal aging process and acute or chronic conditions. According to Zheng, Pan and Hua et al. (2013), about 35-45 percent of individuals who are usually older than 65 years and other 50 percent of the elderly individuals report cases of fall every year. Extrinsic factors are those related to physical environment such as lack of grab bars, poor condition of floor surfaces, inadequate or improper use of assistive devices (Currie).
