AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION Nursing is a developing field that comprise of nurses with various individual and political needs and concerns. As such, the nursing field needs association and affiliation that backers these needs and promotes excellence in nursing. One of such association is the American Nurses Association (A.N.A). The American Nurses Association (ANA) is a professional nursing organization that was formerly known as the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United Stated and Canada in 1896, and received its current name in 1911. Its first president was Isabel Hampton Robb, who advocated for nursing reforms that supported the ideas of emerging nursing profession (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2012, p. 13). The organization was established to carter for the needs and welfare of nurses and its mission is deeply implanted in advocacy and patient safety. ANA also advocates for the health and safety of nurses and patients on optimal staffing and adequate rest to prevent medication errors among other important issues. The ANA also supports patient safety and the need for better policies to prevent medication errors by urging nurses and employers to “collaborate to reduce the risks of nurse fatigue and sleepiness associated with long working hours” (American Nurses Association, 2015). These factors have been known to be the fundamental causes that often leads to medication errors. And the need for better error avoidance strategies or medication management practice and administration system is becoming crystal clear as the number of medication errors are increasing daily in the health care

Provision 8 states, “The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs.” (Nursing World, 2001). Provision 8 taught me that ANA’s goals are not limited to the health and welfare of individuals, but their goals also encompass the welfare of the community through promotion of collaborative work of nurses with other health professionals and the members of the community.
The modern nurse has much to be thankful for because of some of the early pioneers of nursing, such as Florence Nightingale and Jensey Snow. However, the scope and influence of professional nursing, as well as the individual nurse, has seen more exponential growth and change in North America since the establishment of the first professional organization for nursing, the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada, which in 1911 came to be known as the American Nurses Association.
Furthermore, short staffing affects the quality direct care each patient receives. The National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (2012) states an estimated 98,000 individuals die every year from medical errors in the United States. One out of many significant tasks nurses do within their scope of practice is medication administration. Research shows a relationship between short staffing on medication errors: the longer the hours nurses work, the higher the chances of medication errors (Garnett, 2008). (include definition of medication error) Administering medications requires knowledge of patient rights, pharmacological information on the drug, adverse effects, proper dosage calculations, and hospital protocols. When nurses are assigned more patients, they are pressured to give due medications on time. Sometimes due to hunger or fatigue, nurses give the wrong medication to the wrong patient (Frith, Anderson, Tseng, & Fong, 2012).
If I were already a nursing professional and wanted to join an organization, but could only afford to join one I would need to consider many factors before making a decision. Today there are many different organizations to choose from such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA), specialty practice organizations, and ethnic organizations. All of these organizations will have fees, affiliation with other organizations, publications, and benefits, but it is important to become educated on all of them to ensure that I pick the right one for me.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. Medication errors are among the biggest issues in health care settings today. The effect of managed care is one of the causative factors. The need to contain costs has invariably doubled the nurses' workload making them less efficient as caregivers. Example of problem is the high incidence of medication errors. A medication error is any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in control of the health care professional, patient or consumer (NCCMERP, 2008). Medication errors result in high financial costs for health care institutions and adversely affect the patient’s quality of life (Choo, 2010).
