The founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was once quoted saying “No child should die in the dawn of life” and it has been the mission of St. Jude to make their founder’s dream a reality through a series of charitable donations, advertisements, celebrity endorsements, and campaigns. Named after the Patron Saint of hope and lost causes, St. Jude Children’s Hospital was founded in 1960, in Memphis Tennessee and is now named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Blackwell). After speaking with Cardinal Samuel Stritch, Danny Thomas, a famous entertainer, planned to build a hospital where children from all over could receive health care at no cost to their families. As an influential professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Lemuel Diggs stepped in to advise Thomas. Jude Children’s Research Hospital continued to grow, costing more and more for day to day operations in the medical sense and otherwise. With an increase in cost, the need for advertising increased as well. The goal of advertising for a hospital/charity like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to attract generous donors. With a daily operating cost of 2.2 million dollars per day, these donors are vital for the survival of the hospital (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). With an average cost 485,000 dollars for two to three years, treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL for short is not cheap. On top of the cost of research and care for patients and their families, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is also legally required to maintain reserve funds to accommodate for a shifting economy (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). The reserve funds are also to accommodate future patients as well since the reserve can maintain the hospitals operating costs for around 1.5
