Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. Social workers serve an essential role to the functioning of our society, as they are committed and dedicated to increasing the quality of life for underprivileged community members. I fully intend on actively contributing to this endeavor, as I believe social workers have the responsibility to ensure that all community members have their needs met and the opportunity to

Social Workers main objectives are to work for Social Justice, and invoke positive changes for future generations. Social work as I have come to know it is a helping profession on many levels. Social work is not concentrated on only one specific area of need, but targets many areas on a larger scale with vast opportunities in the field. As Hick (2006) states
To better understand countertransference, it is crucial to address transference first. The term transference was coined by Sigmund Freud to denominate the way clients “transfer” feeling from important persons in their early lives, onto the therapist. Greenson (1965) defined transference as “the experiencing of feelings, drives, attitudes, fantasies, and defenses toward a person in the present, which are inappropriate to the person and are a repetition, a displacement of reactions originating in regard to significant persons of early childhood” (p. 156). Assumptions from the clients’ are based on the client’s experiences with, assumptions regarding and other important relationships, such as childhood relations with parents.
Perhaps the most famous social worker from the United States, Jane Addams once said,” This guy is a bastard. He took advantage of my daughter.” Social work allows you to experience many different sides of life; it gives you the opportunity to embrace life to the fullest, and the chance to influence people’s lives for the better. Becoming a Social worker will allow me to get involved with the community and to make a difference. It will shape you into a person that can do anything, and will make a permanent mark on your heart because of the experiences and people you come into contact with. I have faced many challenges throughout my life, but have always been able to manage somehow and rise above them, on the basis of strength and has made me a stronger person. The importance is that I feel I have become self-insured, and can be an asset to the social work profession. As a social worker I will be able to help make other lives better by relating to some of their personal situations, helping kids cope with physical and mental abuse, by providing child protection services.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
A social worker assists in decision making but does not make the decision. Help the client examine realistic options for solving the problem. Assess client’s ability to cope with issues by focusing on their strengths and weakness to form a realistic plan with client and to reframe the problem into a solvable issue and a potential growth situation.
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
