Can you imagine meeting someone, falling in love with them immediately, and getting married to them all in a little over three days?! Well that’s exactly what happens in Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, and Gnomeo and Juliet written by Kelly Asbury, Andy Riley, Kevin Cecil, Rob Sprackling, Steve Hamilton Shaw, and John R. Smith. In these two stories there are big and small similarities, and differences between the characters, setting, and plot events. In these stories there are similarities between the characters, but there are a lot more differences between them. First off, in Romeo and Juliet there are eleven main characters and on the other hand, in Gnomeo and Juliet there are eight main characters. First, we learned that in Gnomeo and Juliet, most of the characters are gnomes, there is no Mercutio, the Nurse is a frog, and Lady Capulet and Montague have died before the story starts. Also in both stories Tybalt is an antagonist and Friar Lawrence gives Romeo/Gnomeo and Juliet advice on their love and how they can be together. Secondly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy in the 1600s and Gnomeo and Juliet takes place in modern day Britain. In both stories Romeo/Gnomeo talks to Juliet on the balcony. Lastly, we learned that Romeo and Juliet starts the story with a fight and Gnomeo and Juliet starts with a lawn mower race. Additionally, in both stories it ends with the feud being over, but in Romeo and Juliet they kill themselves and in Gnomeo and Juliet they are almost killed by the Terafirminator. Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a story of two young lovers. These two hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, belong to feuding families. The family feud causes them to keep their love a secret and therefore only Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence know of their love. Romeo and Juliet are able to look past the feud and let themselves fall in mad love with the other. They let themselves do almost anything for the other and at times it seems like too much to do, even for the one they love.

The differences are more abundant than the similarities. One of the big differences is that Romeo is very outgoing, daring and breaks a lot of rules for love, for example “'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague...Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye Than twenty of their swords: look thou but sweet, And I am proof against their enmity.” (Act 2 Scene 2). This shows that he is breaking many rules like the fact that their families are enemies and are not to talk also he is in her back lawn where he could be caught and killed. To conclude, the characters in “Romeo and Juliet” are all different in the text and film. Also the setting is different and there a main and minor points in both text and film. In my opinion, I prefer the Luhrman’s film as it is modern and simple to understand. This is because Luhrman’s film is modern which makes it more interesting because there are guns and cars which shows us the technology in the 21st century whereas in the text there are traditional settings, props etc. This doesn’t appeal to a wide range of audience in the 21st century because no one uses a sword and a horse for transport.

New aspects and changes needed to modernize the story are written in well, still leaving a mostly accurate retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The differences are what makes it unique from others-- the racism, the take on Tony-- all important. The similarities are what keep it true to the original-- Juliet and Maria, and the famous balcony scene. Everything the writers put in is what makes West Side Story a classic, just like Shakespeare would want it to be.

Although the families hate one another, Gnomeo/Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. However, they were forced to sneak around to meet each other because of the tension between both families. The movie Gnomeo and Juliet, presents a similar idea of the story of Romeo and Juliet. In brief, while there are some notable differences between both versions of Shakespeare’s classic, it is without a doubt, that the essence of the story line remains the same; the tale of two star-crossed lovers.

A similarity between the story and the play is the part where both Juliet’s say they wish that their Romeo’s was not from the rival family. In Gnomeo and Juliet, Juliet say, “why must you wear blue,”(Gnomeo and Juliet). In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name,”(Folger Digital Texts, n.d.). They both wish they were from the same house/garden because they believe they could be together easier that way. This similarity gave the mood sad and heartbreaking mood. A difference between the movie and play is the fact that Juliet from the movie confessed her love for Romeo to their families, but Juliet from the play didn’t. In Gnomeo and Juliet, Juliet tells everyone she loves him after they believe he got ran over by a truck in the middle of the street. Her confession had an impact on the ending of their story. Not only do you see the difference in the setting, but also how the actors dress and look. The biggest difference you notice of all, is the ending to their love story. Even though these movies seem so different, they are also very similar. Juliet, in both movies, loves with no end. Her love and affection for Romeo is consistent. What stuck out as being most different between the two versions of the movie were how the characters acted. In the classic version, Juliet is a much more timid girl and seems much less "experienced" than in the newer version. I feel that her shyness makes her more desireable. It makes their romance seem much more innocent and more meaningful at the same time. I feel that the new Romeo is much less shy in the newer version. This makes their love seem much more lustful, rather than meaningful. Another actor that seemes to change drastically is Tybalt. In the original version, he seems to be much more in control. Tybalt in the newer version is extremely bitter and much more controlled by his uncle.
In reality, there are a lot of remakes of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but none of them are quite like Kelly Asbury’s Gnomeo and Juliet. The name itself is pretty bizarre. Gnomeo and Juliet takes the audience on a rollercoaster of different emotions: hatred, hope, happiness, pity, and even anger.
