'Romeo and Juliet' is a play written by William Shakespeare. The play is about Romeo, a member of the Montague household, falls in love with Juliet, a member of the Capulet household. As the two houses are involved in a feud, they were not allowed to be together, but their deaths finally bring their family’s quarrel to an end. The personal weaknesses of the central characters are somewhat responsible for the tragic outcome of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. These are weaknesses shown by the main characters of Romeo and Juliet, mainly their emotions and love towards each other, which contributes to the tragic outcome. However, the personal weaknesses of Capulet and Montague are more responsible for the tragic outcome, because they have hated each other deeply for centuries, and would never have allowed Romeo and Juliet to marry no matter what. In this essay, the personal weaknesses of the central characters who are somewhat responsible for the tragic outcome: Romeo, Juliet, and Mercutio, will be explored. Romeo is characterised as a person who is impulsive which is a major weakness of this central character. He hides away from his friends in the orchard to declare his love for Juliet, even though he knows how dangerous it is. He also promises to marry her, which happened too quickly. He is also impulsive when he revenges Mercutio’s death and kills Tybalt, which led to banishment from Verona. Romeo is also characterised as a person who loves Juliet dearly and that is another weakness shown by this central character. Romeo stands in the darkness of the garden below Juliet, and shows his love for her “It is my lady. O, it is my love!” (II, ii, 11). This quote evidently and quiet straightforwardly shows Romeo’s love for Juliet. But t... ... middle of paper ... ...for the tragic outcome. After reading the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ I have decided that the fatal flaws of Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio are partly responsible for their own deaths. Even though they did not intentionally cause their death, they did intentionally cause the factors which led to their deaths for example opposing their parents’ decision, marrying each other, getting into fights, and loving each other too much. But I do not think that they are greatly responsible when their families are more responsible. The families Capulet and Montague had the biggest impact on the lives and deaths of Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio. If these two families did not hate each other and kill their children with their love for one another, the outcome of the play would be different and William Shakespeare's tragedy of Romeo and Juliet would not be the great story that it is today.
