In the poem “A Story”, Li-Young Lee shows the complicated relationship between the father and the son by using point of view and structure. Italicized lines distinguish who is talking to draw on point of view to indicate the complex relationship. The poem’s structure also identifies the complex relationship by increasing the lines in each stanza by one-until the sixth stanza which goes down to four lines, and then in the seventh stanza which goes back to five lines. Lee italicized the text when either the father or the son spoke. In lines 11-14 and lines 16-18, the father speaks, and in lines 4 and 19, the son speaks. If the conversion is italicized the title could possibly be considered a stanza of the poem because it is being spoken by the
Lee was able to depict such an arduous relationship between a father and son… a relationship that Lee says shall one day fail, but for now, it is pure and full of emotion. The love the father has for the child, for wanting to keep him by his side is one of true compassion. The complexity between the child being so delighted and displaying such admiration, of wanting his father to read him another bedtime story; to one of which, is screaming at his father for wanting to keep him as a child. This sort of relationship was able to be composed by the use of imagery between the father ageing and the scratching of his ear; to the use of the poems structure layout and point of view all played massive roles in the understanding and perception of this literary art work. The layers and complications of a relationship can be told through many types of literary devices. In the poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, the poet conveys a complex relationship between father and son using point of view and also structure. While the point of view is a third person, the narrator is speaking the father’s thoughts. There is a story in his thoughts that when analyzed show the conflict between the father and the son. The last two lines of the last stanza explain that conflict through the narrator’s eyes which in this case could also be the reader’s eyes since the reader would have come to the same conclusion or reasoning.
Hazel is a young girl who loves running. She has a big track meet coming up and her competitor is this other girl named Gretchen and her pose this girl named Rosie that’s in Gretchen’s pose and she tries to make fun of hazel’s older but little brother at the same time but Hazel doesn’t let that slide and she says that she looks like an elephant once she said that they all left. Later that day She has her track meet and she entered her brother Raymond also. They line up at the starting line Hazel is super nervous but Gretchen keeps acting like she’s the best when she has never beat Hazel. The race starts and Raymond’s running as fast a cheetah and Gretchen and Hazel were like snails on the take off but Raymond was too far ahead for them to catch

The feeling is similar when you love someone very much but they don’t return the feeling. The band, 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS), in their song, If You Don’t Know, sings about how a singer is in love with a person. The person seems to not be sure if they are in love with the singer, and the the singer wishes for the person to let them go. The couple that 5SOS wrote about was in love at one time, but the person is slowly falling out of love with the singer.

He looks at all the other people around him and how they’re doing it, and from that he learns what he believes he should do. It’s a poem that made me think about my past and how that affects my present and future, connecting to different aspects of my life and making me really think.

Much of Li-Young Lee’s Poetry revolves around his memory and circles back to the present. He contemplates, and through focusing on one particular incident touches upon the insecurities he felt as an immigrant in the United States, his love for his mother, his reverence for the man his father is and his grief over the imminent loss of his father’s faculties and eventually his life. Though the text is rather simple and is written in prose, this poem is extremely raw and full of emotion, and this can be seen in the literary devices Lee uses. Even the simplicity of Lee’s language contributes to the poem’s sense of passion, heartache, and inspection of the universal. For example, in line nine, Lee uses a personification, “While loudspeakers declared a new era.” Lee might have added this personification in the poem to paint a picture in the audiences mind. This image of how the child might have interpret the soldiers, that were marching down the streets shouting out the laws of communism to the Chinese people. Not only is it a personification, but a emotional imagery of chaos that was taken place. Another example of literary elements is “Death from childhood, and both of them from dreaming.” This is a metaphor but it does not mean that the child died from dreaming, but in a sense from the situation that the child was in and what they saw. This ended up causing him to become mature quicker and had to stop being a child. In reality the effect of the Chinese Cultural Revolution on the child was that the innocence and faith was gone. In the poem “White Lies” the language of the poem creates an image of a young girl who is ashamed of her background.The language used in some parts of the poem point to the girl being biracial as well as a very light skinned biracial who appears to be white “light-bright” “near-white” “high-yellow”, and about how she tends to lie to the white people in order to not feel judged. She says she lives in uptown but she actually lives in a roughly built part of town “not in that pink and green shanty-fied shotgun section along the tracks.”. As she describes how easy it is for her to tell about where she lives “I could easily tell the white folks…” the image created is that people truly think she is white and their acceptance of her lies only makes her feel more apart of them so she keeps doing it.
Nonetheless, this really is a tale of compelling love between the boy and his father. The actions of the boy throughout the story indicate that he really does love his father and seems very torn between his mother expectations and his father’s light heartedness. Many adults and children know this family circumstance so well that one can easily see the characters’ identities without the author even giving the boy and his father a name. Even without other surrounding verification of their lives, the plot, characters, and narrative have meshed together quite well.
The Poem Annabel Lee, written by Edgar Allan Poe, told a tale of love. In this romantic poem the narrator emanates feelings of passion, and overwhelming joy when he speaks of his beloved, Annabel Lee. Although the poem expresses the sorrow of Annabel’s demise, it accentuates the bond between the two characters, so much so that death could not break their eternal love for one another (Poe, 494; 495). One of which being Rhythm, Poe creates reading that flows, one that is constantly reusing similar sounds to interpret the beauty of the love between the two characters. Another literary element that was found in this poem was imagery. By composing a poem that uses words to describe the location and characters, Poe was able to implement imagery in his writing. The final literary element Poe conveyed in the poem was mood. Poe was able to express the element of mood by the words he used.
