The two novels are Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Pearl, also by John Steinbeck. From start to finish, the novel emphasizes the importance of will power and determination. Will is unbreakable; you can put humans through hell and take everything from them, but as long as they make the consistent choice to remain determined and driven, the will power they possess will remain. Far too often do we make such miniscule problems in life seem unbearable; however, Unbroken allows us to answer the constant question of “compared to what?” In times where Louis is forced to do things like “crawl through the filth of a pig 's sty… to save himself from starving to death” (Hillenbrand 128), one often wonders how selfish and ungrateful we truly are. Surely we can wait a few more hours before eating our next meal. The daily trials we encounter are nothing compared to the daily torture Louis endured, and his story seemingly puts our lives back into perspective. Unbroken is a remarkably powerful book because it opens up the eyes of readers and allows them to take away messages that seemed so obvious before. From a very early age we are taught to never give up and to keep your hope alive; however, we never truly understand what that means. Many people show perseverance, including me. I showed perseverance when I failed a quiz and I knew to get my grade up I had to work harder and study more. I knew if my parents found out that I failed a quiz they would yell at me and would be disappointed on me for getting a bad grade on a quiz because I didn’t study. This factor contributes me to work harder, I learned that I need to work harder to succeed, like Salva, how he showed perseverance by looking for his family.

When Thomas just kept trying to find the clues, and backed up to look at the whole picture it was then easy for him to uncover the maze. Thomas definitely had to stay calm and logical for this to be achieved. When I feel most frustrated or defeated, I have to set my emotions aside in order to move forward, and think logically, otherwise my work gets the best of me, and I won’t do as well. I use these life lessons day to day with school and homework. If I just keep trying, and work extra hard, I can always get my grades up. It’s so easy to just want to give up when we get disappointed but if we force ourselves to persevere we will have success in the long run even if we don’t see it right away, such as Thomas did when he escaped the maze.

Santiago is a brave and defiant old man who is sad that he did not manage to complete his journey with his trophy beside him. If one was to look into this more and try and come to a conclusion as to why the old man constantly repeats that he went out to far, I think they would find that it is the old man's way of dealing with his loss. As much as he says it though, I do not think that if he had it to do over again, he would stop before he caught the fish. Santiago is a true fisherman and he would do whatever it took to prove that.
