For me personally, music appreciation is defined as looking at different pieces of music and musical forms, and learning to find appreciation for them. This appreciation is formed not only by listening to several pieces of music, but by learning to understand what you may be listening too. This involves introducing yourself to many pieces of music and learning to interpret, what makes each piece different and unique. Understanding the historical background and societal changes that have taken place during the creation of the musical piece, is also an important factor to consider. Music is not only creative, but it also makes up part of a societies history. Music is an art form that connects different societies and cultures together, it possess the amazing ability to make us into one. When I first started this class, I was not sure what to expect in terms of the overall content. Would I be listening to various pieces of music and then have to identify them? My dad was the kind of man, who also loved music and he always searched for musical pieces in all forms to love and appreciate. I remember one day he had found this new band and wanted me to hear some of their musical pieces. I remember his excitement as he made me listen to a few of their songs. Starting with the classical era, documentation and musical education became an important topic. The term of musical appreciation started in the Classical period. Patrons from the time wanted to learn more about the music they were listening to. Patrons also started becoming more involved with the music and their composers. Composers became more of a public icon, and people wanted to see the people behind the music.
I decided to take Music Appreciation online because I like taking time to read more about music and its history without being rushed. By taking this class, I would like to know more about music and find more inspiration as well as motivation to complete piano courses. Besides, I would love to know more about pieces of music, especially classical, blues and jazz.
At the start of this class, I did not think that I would learn as much as I did. Just last night my wife and I were watching “The Voice” and someone was singing “I’ll Be There.” I told her that was a song by The Jackson 5. She disagreed with me and told me that Mariah Carey had sung that song. I looked it up and we were both right. I went onto tell her that I was more right because The Jackson 5 sang it first. It got me thinking about this class and how I catch myself thinking about the history of songs whenever I hear them on the radio or in a movie.

Few would argue against the idea that we educate ourselves and our society so that we have adequate means with which to understand and interact with elements of the world around us. Subjects such as mathematics, language, history, and the hard sciences are granted immediate and unquestioned legitimacy in our schools, and with good reason. We encounter each of these elements of our lives on a daily basis. We need to have an understanding of these disciplines in order to interact with them, otherwise they are meaningless to us. I submit that the same can be said for the fundamental concepts of music. Music is something that we encounter in our society every day. It surrounds us. Indeed it would be practically impossible to escape. Like so many other naturally occurring phenomena, a discipline has been developed over centuries to help us interact with music, and that discipline is what I and those of my profession are charged with teaching.

When I scheduled the class Persuasive Communications, I had no particular interest in the subject matter; I just needed to finish the general education requirement for a second writing course. It fit my schedule and sounded reasonably interesting, but I did not think I would gain much from it. It was a general education class after all, and would not be very high on my priority list. Now that the semester is almost over and the class work is complete (albeit after this paper), I feel as if I gained a lot from this class. The class’s main objective was to expand our skills as writers, but it served in teaching us many other things that hold value in our education and future careers.
Music is a basic part of everyday life. What makes music unique is its ability to create an emotional response in a person. A music education program should develop the aesthetic experience of every student to its highest potential. Aesthetics is the study of the relationship of art to the human senses. Intelligence exists in several areas, which includes music. The concept of aesthetics allows us to see into ourselves, which in turn helps the development of the intelligences. Not only are these intelligences brought up greatly in music education, but they can be transferred to other areas as well, allowing students to grow more through their other subjects.
Primarily, I listened to music because I enjoyed the melody, the rhythm and the way it made me feel. The way music can change the mood and what it teaches. Everyone can agree on how music can teach us a lesson. Well, not all music does the same on teaching us a lesson but there is music out there that helps us feel better. Music moved me on how I feel and what I wanted to listen to depending on the mood I am. Whenever I feel down I listen to Brand New, La Dispute, Nirvana, or Blue Foundation. When I fee ecstatic and eager I usually listen to my 60’s, 70’s or 80’s band. Music follows the way I feel. I am pretty shoddy at several subjects. Year after year, math continues to utterly baffle me, and forget staying focused long enough to read a few chapters in most books. But no matter how many characters in a novel I mix up, or the countless times I get the order of operations in math wrong, there remains one ability that I can always fall back on, and that is writing music.

Music is the most powerful of all the arts because it stimulates, manipulates and dissipates our moods through the emotions. Music, in our culture, functions in many ways; it can make work more enjoyable, create a fraternity among men, encourage a spirit of worship, and be an expression of emotion.
Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.
No human culture has ever been identified as not being associate to music, and for majority of the people, music is simply the source of the most powerful as well as the most significant experiences of their lives. In over 100 years or so since the first ever recorded music was widely available, our lives have become fully suffused by it; we are thus born and die to the music, we eat, sleep, shop, travel and simply make love to music, we also work, play and enjoy to music (Clarke, 2012). As most of our powerful memories are linked to music, or are usually accompanied by music – and maybe even as listeners, we almost become just like the music which we hear. As TS Eliot wrote; “Music heard so deeply that it is not heard at all, but you are the music while the music lasts.”
