This paper seeks to explain Information systems and Decision Support System (DSS). The following topics will be covered with regards to Information Systems and Decision Support System; background on what an Information system is, what a Decision Support Systems is, explain how the Decision Support System relates to users, discuss the types of Decision Support Systems, characteristics of a Decision Support System, explain the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the Decision Support Systems and lastly An information system is a “collection of software, hardware, procedures, data and computer networks used by people in organizations” (). The Passive Decision Support System, Active Decision Support System and Cooperative Decision Support System (2013). A Passive Decision Support System, is a system that assists in the process of decision making, however, it can’t bring out clear decisions (2013). An active Decision Support System, on the other hand, can bring out solutions and decision suggestions. The Cooperative Decision Support System allows the decision maker to change the decision suggestions provided by the system before the information is sent back to the system for validation (2013). While there are many ways computerized systems can be characterized, it is important to compare them in terms of what the user will be doing with the
In conclusion, clinical decision support systems provide a mechanism for improving the quality of care services when integrated with evidence-based practice and clinical guidelines. These systems would particularly improve health care quality when combined with evidence-based medicine. This process may also include the use of databases and condition-specific clinical guidelines to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.

Asemi observe that Management Information System (MIS) is one of the information systems that is computer based. Besides, Asemi defines MIS as “an organizational method of providing past, present and project information related to internal operations and external intelligences. It supports the planning, control and operation functions of an organization by furnishing uniform information in the proper time frame to assist the decision makers,” (2011). The aim of MIS is to satisfy the general information need of the entire manager in an organization. Before the advent of computers, the process of decision-making was one that was full of built-in advantages and ad hoc methods. Computers technologies have changed the landscape of the decision-making process completely by making the process less demanding and easy to undertake. The reason for this situation is that information technology has made access to information more automated, efficient, effective, timely, and less ambiguous. Consequently, the ordinary t...

Mesa’s Foundation Trust (MFT) is a medical provider that provides services to patients. MFT wants to reduce the amount of resources that were provider by several other facilities. During this consolidation MFT’s goal to continue to provide the same types of service and without impacting the amount of time. The need for a decision support system that can not only maintain the historical data, but also capture new data for analyzing. Based on the needs IT support must build the DSS to handle semi-structured problems. The decisions that are made based on given data are standard, but there will always be problems that fall outside the norm (Turban, Sharda, & Delen, 2011). There will be data that is known, but there will also be the unknown. The data should be gathered into a database that can provide management the ability to analyze. The system must be able to collect the given data and an process the information in a format that is understanding to the decision makers. “Decision making is concerned with evaluating and ranking possible alternatives of action” [9]. “It is a process that involves multiple steps depending on the number of viable options and scenarios” [1]. A person has to look into the pros and cons of each option and consider all the alternatives, decision maker also needs to be able to forecast the outcome of each option for the given situation and based on all these criteria can determine the best option suitable [5]. Nowadays technology is playing a vital role in helping humans take decisions in an effective way by processing the data, analyzing it and providing the alternatives to choose from. There are a lot of information systems that have emerged in the past few years which are also called “Decision support systems” (DSS), which help decision makers in identifying and solving problems by making right decisions utilizing the data and different models available[11].With the advent of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Information and Computing industry, have given rise to a new form of DSS called as “Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS)” , that can in some way imitate human cognitive abilities in decision making [10]. “An IDSS is a decision support system that makes extensive use of the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. Ideally, an intelligent decision support system should behave like a human consultant supporting decision makers by providing full control of”: 1) acquiring data 2) evaluating the data and 3) making the final decision [6].The aim of intelligent decision support system is therefore to emulate human decision-making capabilities as closely as possible.
To start out with what is an information system? I stated that information systems have been around for a long time, and found information systems defined as “(1) A set of people, procedures, and resources that collects, transforms, and disseminates information in an organization. (2) A system that accepts data resources as input and processes them into information products as output.” (Management Information Systems) Information systems therefore were originally people gathering information and processing it into useable data through a set of defined steps. For many companies, IS is the name of the department responsible for computers, networking ...
The most common purpose for (BI) systems is to aid in the decision making process. BI systems collect data, store the gathered information in data warehouses, analyze the data and then present the data in easy to understand applications for the decision making process. The following studies research the role that BI systems play in the decision making process.
An executive information system (EIS) is known as a decision support system (DSS) utilized to aid senior supervisors in the decision-making process. It is admitted that, it does this by providing easy admission to significant data. Executive information systems can be used in many various types of establishments to monitor initiative performance as well as to organize prospects and problems. What is more, it provides very rapid access to the appropriate information and also suggests the direct admittance to the different management reports. At the current time, EIS data is available company- or enterprise-wide, enabled by personal computers and workstations on local area networks (LANs). Employees can admit company data to assist decision-making in their individual workplaces and departments. This permits employees to provide relevant information and ideas.
Decision-making, in effect is a cognitive process in which human beings select the best course of action from various multiple choices/alternatives. Since it is a very tacit and subtle process , making is invisible, it is called a psychological construct1. The decision making leads to final action. Decision-making acts as an important part of the job in many professions wherein important and critical decisions are made by the specialists who possess requisite expertise in that given area. The areas can be related to as diverse as politics(as in Mr Obama, the US President making a decision to deploy forces in a war torn country), or scientific discovery or may be a typical business decision (Apple launching a new product next summer). As there are different considerations in decision-making, the decision support systems belong to a multidisciplinary environment which includes database research, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, simulation methods, and software engineering. In short , DSS are support systems which are expected to cut across huge data points , perhaps contradictory and give a reasonable...
