Macbeth An Analysis of the Three Major Themes of Macbeth Throughout history there have been several people that could have been known as being “evil.” For example, Hitler attempted a genocide of the Jews in Europe, Joseph Stalin murdered millions of his own people, as well as Osama Bin Laden was the leader of the once prominent terrorist group Al Qaeda. In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is truly an evil character. Macbeth throughout the play killed countless amount of people. Macbeth is easily seen as being evil. While Macbeth was the main bad guy in the play, underneath the main plot, theme, Macbeth’s story, there were several underlying messages that the audience may have missed. During the play, there would be parts of the play in which there were characters that have gone insane, or have committed crazy actions. The characters that go insane are most prominently Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Although, more than likely, Macbeths insanity was triggered by Lady Macbeth persuading Macbeth to kill Duncan. Later in the play, Lady Macbeth truly goes crazy, “The Thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that, my lord, no more o’ that! You mar all with this starting,” page 403. Lady Macbeth in the act V, displays in the play that she is saying things that normal people wouldn’t say aloud. Lady Macbeth says that the blood cannot be washed off of her hands, which was Duncan’s blood. Also, Lady Macbeth says that Banquo cannot come out of the ground, and she also starts to hear and see things that aren’t actually there. Later in act V, Lady Macbeth simply cannot take it anymore and she therefore, commits suicide. Macbeth also goes insane, most likely due to being power hungry and wanting to keep the power. Since Macbeth is power hungry, Macbeth starts to kill people. It is unclear how many people Macbeth killed, but easily the most disturbing murder that Macbeth pulled off was the murder of Macduff’s family. Macbeth is by far best known for the tragic story of a young man becoming power hungry, and then losing everything he had, including his life. The play is famous more notably for the story, however, the readers who pay more attention, and understand the secondary meaning in the story appreciate it more than some. The play should be famous not only for just its plot, but for the themes and secondary meanings that are all over the play. Not only with Macbeth were there secondary meanings in many of the parts, but all of Shakespeare’s work as well. It takes a special person to realize the secondary meanings in Shakespeare’s work, but when one appreciates what Shakespeare wrote specifically for those people, people tend to appreciate Shakespeare’s plays even more. I, for one, never did understand any of the secondary meanings in Shakespeare’s plays, however, in my senior year, I have begun to essentially look past the lines. Because of this, I have developed a greater enjoyment of Shakespeare’s plays. The messages that Shakespeare writes are enjoyable for me because I could apply most of the messages in my daily

By comparing Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Peter Moffat’s adaptation film Macbeth Retold we can definitely see the emphasis on universal themes of loyalty and guilt. Both texts emphasise the importance of loyalty as the integral trigger for guilt, allowing greater insight into universal themes. While Shakespeare employs literary techniques to express various forms of devotion and culpability, Moffat manipulates motifs and various characters to convey undermining themes. From differing perspectives, both composers simultaneously demonstrate the timelessness of universal themes despite being comprised in different contexts.
Macbeth, a tragedy, starts with a dying, bloody Captain talking about the valor with which Macbeth fought. How does this brave, devoted, valiant soldier become an insane, cold-blooded murderer, killing men, women, and children alike? The story of his downfall begins with his new-found ambition to become king after three witches tell him of his “imperial theme.” After fighting so courageously in battle, Macbeth, Thane of Glamis a title inherited from his late father, and fellow nobleman Banquo, encounter three witches. They greet Macbeth by his current title, by a title soon to be bestowed upon him, and last by the title of king. Macbeth rejects conformation to traditional gender roles in its portrayal of Lady Macbeth’s relationship with her husband, her morals and their effect on her actions, and her hunger for power. Her regard for Macbeth is one of low respect and beratement, an uncommon and most likely socially unacceptable attitude for a wife to have towards her spouse at the time. She often ignores morality and acts for the benefit of her husband, and subsequently herself. She is also very power-hungry and lets nothing stand in the way of her success. Lady Macbeth was a character which challenged expectations of women and feminism when it was written in the seventeenth century.
`Act 1- The three weird witches meet and they are planning on when they are going to meet again to talk to Macbeth. In the next scene King Duncan talks to the injured captain about the battle against the invaders, who are under the command of Macdonwald. The captain tell King Duncan how he saved Malcolm and Macbeth was very violent and fought with great force. Then the Captain is taken away by the servants then Ross enters and he tells Duncan that Cawdor has been beaten and the Norway army retreated. Then King Duncan comes to the decision to kill Cawdor and then Macbeth will "become Cawdor". Then Duncan sends out Ross to go tell Macbeth about what had happened at this time. In scene three the witches approach Banquo and Macbeth when they were on their way to Forres. The witches inform Macbeth and Banquo about what had happened in the kings court and they tell him he is the Thane of Cawdor and Glamis and that Macbeth will eventually become king. Then Banquo is told riddles that his children will be royal and he will not. After the witches disappear then Ross and Angus come up to them and Ross informs Macbeth the news which he just heard. Then Macbeth contemplates whether he will have to spill blood to become king, then when he is done they all continue to Forres. Then Duncan finds out that Cawdor dies because his son killed him. Then Ross, Angus, Banquo and Macbeth arrive. Then Malcolm becomes the heir to Duncans throne and Macbeth has Duncan dine at his castle that night so he rides to tell his wife. In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the protagonist, Macbeth, murders the king of Scotland and eventually murders several other people. In the end, Macbeth meets his tragic fate of being killed by the nobleman Macduff. Throughout the play, Macbeth makes decisions that affect his fate, but other characters manipulate his choices and his actions. Early in the play Macbeth, Macbeth has control over his actions, but due to the influence of other characters and his subsequent insanity, by the end of the play, Macbeth has no control over his fate.
The one who is at fault in the play of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare is not all who presume it is. Some say the blame is on the Witches, some say Lady Macbeth, but Macbeth is the real man at fault. He was at choice of his decisions, only slightly pressured by his wife, Lady Macbeth. Macbeth dug himself into a hole he was not able to climb out of. There was no return to the light side for him as he had no regrets, he was inhumane, and cold-blooded. There are many examples that show his inhumanity towards others throughout the play, one cold-blooded act to another with no turning back. It was a painful ending for Macbeth since no one showed sympathy for him as his head ended up on a sword. Macbeth is at fault for all the critical events within the play as he is the one that killed Banquo, King Duncan, and Macduff’s family.
MacBeth’s villainy is shown when he kills his king, friend, and innocent people and usurps the throne but he is not totally evil. His bravery loyalty and honour are qualities to be admired. He’s a man of action and remorse not just an evil villain.

Macbeth was not evil he was just a man struggling with his identity and trying to be something he was not. He new nothing other than how to be a soldier and he was good at it. In the end he realised it was the only way he could win his battle. “I’ll fight till from me bones me flesh be hacked. Give me my armour.” 5:3:33. Even though Macbeth had become hated and thought of as a tyrant to others he had won his own battle. This becomes clear when at the end of the play Macbeth feels proud to say “My name’s Macbeth.” 5:8:6.

One of the most important themes in Macbeth involves the witches' statement in Act 1, Scene1 that "fair is foul and foul is fair." (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 10) This phrase aptly describes the macabre status quo within the character Macbeth and without. When Macbeth and Banquo first see the weird sisters, Banquo is horrified by their hideous appearances. Conversely, Macbeth immediately began to converse with these universally known evil creatures. After hearing their prophecies, one can say that Macbeth considered the witches to be "fair" when in reality their intentions were quite "foul." Macbeth's possession of the titles of Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland came by foul means. Macbeth became the Thane of Glamis by his father Sinel's death; he became Thane of Cawdor when the former namesake was executed for treason; and he was ordained King of Scotland after murdering the venerable Duncan. Thus, Macbeth has a rather ghastly way of advancing in life.
