The Crips, as we learned in module 3 are one of the most notorious black or predominately African American gang founded in Southern Los Angeles, California in 1969. This gang was co-found by 16-year-old Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III. Even before the Crips however, there was a gang known as the Hoover Groovers. The Hoover Groovers would later form an alliance with the Crips and change their name to Hoover Crips. The 52 Hoover Groovers were started in the 1960s, way before the formation of Crips. They were originated in the area of 52nd Street and Hoover Street, (hence the name) which is between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Avenue. It was not until the mid 1970s that the Hoover Groovers formed an alliance with the West Side Crips and changed their names to Hoover Crips. The 52 Hoover Crips are one sub set of many in the Hoover set. However, they are the only Hoover gang in the set to still identify themselves as Crips. 52 Hoover Crips can be spotted wearing the color blue like all other Crip gangs since they are the last Hoover set to still be a Crip and not Criminal. Also since they are a Hoover gang, they can also be spotted wearing the color orange. One particular item of clothing that is not unusual to see members of the 52 Hoover Gang wearing is clothing with the Houston Astros logo on it. The Houston Astros Logo is an orange 5 pointed star with a large “H” in the middle of it. The surrounding color is blue.
