Bullying Today Have you ever been bullied, or felt the substantial effects bullying has on its victims? Bullying is not only a problem for children and teenagers, but it affects people of all ages. Bullying is a major social dilemma in society today. Many people believe that bullying is simply part of growing up, and that it is a phase that some individuals go through. I personally believe that there should be zero tolerance for bullying. Despite all of the anti-bullying research, programs, and campaigns, bullying still exists and is not being addressed to the extent necessary to stop and prevent it. Bullying among American elementary, middle and high school students is a growing problem. Bullying can be defined as the use of aggression, force, abuse, and intimidation to impose power or status over another person. More children are becoming victims of this often tragic problem today than ever before. In fact, one in seven students in grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying (MBNBD). It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of an attack or intimidation by other students (MBNBD). Bullying can be the result of prejudice based on race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and appearance. Bullying is a problem because it affects a person’s self esteem and emotional health. Bullying can cause children or teens to feel tense, afraid, and can also affect an adolescent’s confidence. Bullying can be a repetitive and habit forming behavior. The oppression from bullying can take place in many forms. For instance, direct bullying includes physical behaviors such as hitting, shoving, restraining, slapping, kicking, and other acts of violence. Verbal bullying is another form. Yes, I agree children need to learn how to cope with life, in order to become stable adults. But the cruelty and violence in today’s bullying is not healthy, normal, nor necessary for children to learn lifelong lessons. Especially when in very extreme cases it is the cause of murder and or suicide amongst children and teens. One could say that bullying is not a problem, or that it’s just a phase children and teenagers go through while in school. One might even say they have never had a bullying problem, or they might say that bullying does not happen at my workplace. Bullying has been happening in society for a very long time. Totally eliminating it could prove to be extremely difficult, but nonetheless, possible.
Bullying is a serious issue in todays world. Research shows that bullying leads to failure in school, physical anguish, poor social/emotional development, and perhaps even death. Not only can bullying affect young in school, but also adults at the workplace. Without the courage of the witnesses to these acts, nothing can be done about bullying. Bullying cannot be ignored, and if it is, it will only lead to bigger problems and will cause more deaths. Have you ever bullied or been bullied? If you have bullied or been bullied then you should know how bullying feels like. Bullying is very negative and creates major problems for our society. Nothing good comes out of bullying. It could very well change or ruin a person’s life. In fact, it does ruin many people’s lives. Kids can be mentally scarred if they are teased often. Even worse, they could be killed or fatally injured if the bullying gets extreme. There are many causes for bullying which must be taken care of before bullying can be stopped. T.V. violence, families in poverty, and mis-teachings are just several of the many serious causes for bullying. Bullying must be stopped or prevented no matter how long it will take, it is a deeply concerning matter.

Bullying.. it has been around for who knows how long and it is becoming a big problem in the past couple of years. Professor Louise Arseneault, senior author, also from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's adds: "We need to move away from any perception that bullying is just an inevitable part of growing-up. Teachers, parents and policy-makers should be aware that what happens in the school playground can have long-term repercussions for children. Programmes to stop bullying are extremely important, but we also need to focus our efforts on early intervention to prevent potential problems persisting into adolescence and adulthood." I agree with this this statement 100% we need to stop looking at how this is all can be a learning process and they have to get through this. Bullying is becoming a world problem and needs to be put to a stop.
Bullying comes in many forms, from teasing to harassment to physical aspects. When people talk about bullying, it seems to get swept under the rug, like it’s not a big deal. However, bullying is an epidemic. I believe the number one reason a child, or adult, is bullied has to do with being different. I think bullying is starting entirely too young in children, these days. I feel there is a difference between harmless teasing and bullying, but harmless teasing can turn into bullying in the blink of an eye.

It only takes one bad experience to change your opinion on something. Imagine if you went through this same bad experience for months, or better yet years. Your whole personality, how you view yourself, and others changes drastically. This is what it feels like to be bullied. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.

Even though bullying has changed over the years from being physical abuse and harassment that happens on the playgrounds of schoolyards to tormenting over the Internet. Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools.
