Bullying Today Have you ever been bullied, or felt the substantial effects bullying has on its victims? Bullying is not only a problem for children and teenagers, but it affects people of all ages. Bullying is a major social dilemma in society today. Many people believe that bullying is simply part of growing up, and that it is a phase that some individuals go through. I personally believe that there should be zero tolerance for bullying. Despite all of the anti-bullying research, programs, and campaigns, bullying still exists and is not being addressed to the extent necessary to stop and prevent it. Bullying among American elementary, middle and high school students is a growing problem. Bullying can be defined as the use of aggression, force, abuse, and intimidation to impose power or status over another person. More children are becoming victims of this often tragic problem today than ever before. In fact, one in seven students in grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying (MBNBD). It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of an attack or intimidation by other students (MBNBD). Bullying can be the result of prejudice based on race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and appearance. Bullying is a problem because it affects a person’s self esteem and emotional health. Bullying can cause children or teens to feel tense, afraid, and can also affect an adolescent’s confidence. Bullying can be a repetitive and habit forming behavior. The oppression from bullying can take place in many forms. For instance, direct bullying includes physical behaviors such as hitting, shoving, restraining, slapping, kicking, and other acts of violence. Verbal bullying is another form. Yes, I agree children need to learn how to cope with life, in order to become stable adults. But the cruelty and violence in today’s bullying is not healthy, normal, nor necessary for children to learn lifelong lessons. Especially when in very extreme cases it is the cause of murder and or suicide amongst children and teens. One could say that bullying is not a problem, or that it’s just a phase children and teenagers go through while in school. One might even say they have never had a bullying problem, or they might say that bullying does not happen at my workplace. Bullying has been happening in society for a very long time. Totally eliminating it could prove to be extremely difficult, but nonetheless, possible.
