Mohammad Alsediqi English ESL 1020 Project 2: Comparison and Contrast April 13th, 2014 Being Rich and Being Famous Many people wish that they can be rich or famous; some of them wish they can be both. Being rich is not the same as being famous; they each have a different meaning in many aspects. The society refers to a person with money as a rich person, and to a person who is widely known as a famous person. Some people get confused between the two terms, because nowadays, most people get famous because they are rich, but that should not be the case. Being rich refers to a person who has a lot of money, but being famous refers to a person who is well known. Being rich doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is famous; a lot of rich people don’t like to go public and become famous because being rich sometimes comes with some disadvantages. A rich person’s life does not always sound as easy as it is thought to be; rich people do experience difficulties as well. People prefer to be rich than poor, of course, but that does not guarantee they will have the perfect life. Being rich comes with few drawbacks: becoming materialistic, being threatened by kidnappers in order to get money, being asked for money all the time, accounting problems, paying a lot of taxes and many more. One disadvantage that many rich people suffer from is becoming so materialistic and selfish to the point that they forget about the less unfortunate people, including their own families and friends. A lot of rich people are not in contact with their families because of such issues, which is a very bad consequence of becoming rich. Losing one’s own family members and loved ones for money is such a shame. Advantages of being rich are far more than its disadvantag... ... middle of paper ... ...e those fantasies in depth and live either the rich or the famous life style with both its positives and negatives, some people might change their minds about being rich or famous or even both. They would rather choose to have a normal lifestyle but be in touch with their loved ones and live a less stressful life where they don’t have to put media and the public’s interest before their own. As discussed previously, there are many differences in the defining a rich person and a famous person. The main difference would be that being rich is having lots of money, and being famous is being well known to the public. Being famous comes with many rewards and minuses which do cause a stressful lifestyle as a result. Being rich also comes with many advantages that makes living life a lot easier and nicer in many ways, but does come with many disadvantages in a lot of cases.
If one is deemed rich, they are usually labeled as a snob or arrogant. Not every rich person is mean, selfish or cruel; it’s just the way they are portrayed nowadays. Just because one is rich does not mean that one does not care for
He further shows us that the people of today are richer than their grandparents but are not happier in their lives (from National Statistics of social pathology). Even with these facts, people in the United States still believe if they had more money all of their problems would be solved, but once they reach that next income bracket they are not satisfied and try to reach the next one. Myers et al tells us, "even if being rich and famous is rewarding, no one ever claimed material success alone makes us happy. Other conditions like - family- friends- free time - have been shown to increase happiness" (Csikszentmihaly 145). therefore we must find balance in our own lives, and not just focus on making money. Instead we need friends, family and even free time, as aforementioned doing an activity you enjoy such as listening to music or
Not all people can be rich. According to the article “The Treadmill of Consumption”, Robert says that “Life is a game. Money is how we keep score”. That is what some people think about real life, and that is wrong, because real life isn’t a game. It is a world where you need to work and earn your money to buy things you need. Not everyone can have a big house and many cars. Everyone is different and have different jobs and salaries. Somebody is born rich, and they easily get money from their parents, but others work hard to get the place where they are now and the money that they are earning. People never know who works hard and get it easy, but in any way they want to be like them. Moreover, people forget what they have, and they just want more. In the article “All That Glitters Is Not Gold”, it says that everyone should be equal. It is true that being equal would be an easy solution for people. Most of the people earn enough money to live good and simple lives, but that is not enough for them. They look at rich people and forget about themselves. Maybe, the money that they have is plenty for them, and they don’t need to be
celebrity may be found in the words of one of America’s Founding Fathers, John Adams, who wrote, ‘‘The rewards . . . in this life are steem and admiration of others—the punishments are neglect and contempt. The desire of the esteem of others is as real a want of nature as hunger—and the neglect and contempt of the world as severe as a pain.” (Price, 463). The author suggests that fame is not at all w...
Money is the driving force behind our society, and the severe materialism that we are experiencing is taking a toll in our persona, relationships and quality of life. People work extremely hard to have bigger houses, the newest car models, and the latest technologies. At the end, none of these things make individuals happy because they barely have time left to enjoy them. However, society keeps reminding us that we are what we own, and if we don’t have much, we are nobody. The author Carolyn Gregoire explains that “…there is no direct correlation between income and happiness. Once our basic needs are met, wealth makes very little difference to one 's overall well-being and happiness. And in fact, extremely wealthy people actually suffer from higher rates of depression.” Another interesting point relates to relationships; according to a study published in the Journal Of Couple & Marriage Therapy, materialism is actually correlated with unhappiness in marriages. Finally, materialism and consumerism affect deeply the attitude of the individual toward others. The individual becomes more self- absorbed, exhibit narcissistic traits, and is more likely to behave unethically. The article Wealthy Selfies by Maia Szalavitz argues that “…in five different experiments involving several hundred undergraduates and 100 adults recruited from online communities, the researchers found higher levels of both narcissism and
Those who are rich are happier and feel superior. Those who have less money get discouraged and unhappy. In ways as the game continues, players emotions mirror real life. Those in the upper class have a lot of money and an easier time full of joy. Those in the middle class will own a little property but they won't ever earn enough to move up in social status. Those in poverty sink lower and lower into debt and struggle to stay afloat.
To their surprise, the dreams of being rich and famous which were offered to them on
For some, simply having infinite wealth and popularity is enough for them to be happy. For others, they need something that money can’t buy. Two books that express these qualities are: The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both of these books describe the life of a wealthy man but each of them have different ideas of the American dream. Examples from these books will show how the American dream differs from person to person.
They do not wear expensive suits or live in a big house. Those who had a lot of money but spent it all on big, luxury items are called UAWs. A UAW is an “under accumulator of wealth” (Stanley and Danko 14). A good example of a UAW is the Great Gatsby. Gatsby owned a big house with a big pool. He invited hundreds of people over for parties every weekend. He drove a Rolls-Royce type of fancy car. Gatsby had hundreds of shirts, most of which probably had never been worn that cost thousands of dollars. On the other hand, a millionaire is a PAW, which is an “accumulator of wealth” (Stanley and Danko
People say the root of all evil is money, but yet you hear parents tell their children “don’t pick that major, it doesn’t make much money” and yet it is also collected at churches. Many individuals emigrate their native country in hope to make a better living in the States. That through hard work and dedication you can become “rich”. Unfortunately, it is easier said than done. Ironically, many people dream of being rich so they do not have to work, yet ridicule the poor for being “lazy”.
The fame that comes from being a celebrity or entrepreneur does not render them immune from ridicule, speculations, loneliness, or exploit. Those chasing the American Dream may see this end goal of becoming wealthy enough for all of their problems to disappear, but this ...
Who does not wish to be rich? The first thing that might come to mind when thinking about having a lot of money is owning luxurious cars, living in a prodigious residency, having expensive items to wear, or anything of that nature. A rich person has the ability to buy anything to please his or her desires, and he or she can visit any place at any time without having to think about it twice. Many people perceive that happiness comes from how much money they have. People confuse being wealthy with being happy.
Different people hold different views about whether celebrities deserve the money they obtained. Most people just see the performers’ perfect shows on the stage, or the musicians’ excellent performances in the concert hall; however they did not see the hard works that celebrities need to do behind the stage and spotlights. The people who do not know how hard that they prepare for a show, a TV show, a movie or a concert, think all celebrities do not deserve the incomes that they get and earn money easily and highly, but they use their efforts to get money as normal people. As the old saying states, “no gain without pain.” The famous and professional celebrities who have high reputations may need to stay up late to practice his performance again and again before going on the stage. People always believe a person’s efforts determines the applause that he deserves. All the efforts
We are well aware that there are wealthy people, and poorer people in today’s world. People strive to be wealthy, but what separates the wealthy from the poor? There are two mindsets between the two groups that holds the key to their failure or success. If notice closely, you will see exactly why the wealthy, and successful people are capable of living up to their full potential, and why the poverty are living in a poorer environment. In order to be wealthy and succeed in life, you don’t need a miracle, nor do you need a lot of money to get there. What Is essential, is having a positive attitude, and the right mindset. As a result, the right positive mind set will bring in exactly what you’re thinking and wanting. Wheatear that be good or bad thoughts. Here are 3 main differences in the mindsets between the wealthier groups, and the poverty groups.
Napoleon Hill once said, “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” This quote should be frequently used in society’s everyday lives. Celebrities influence people’s lives on a day-to-day basis and they do not even realize it. People use reality T.V. and commercials to figure out what they are supposed to wear or how they are supposed to live, but what they do not realize, is that the majority of media is fake. As a whole, we need to figure out how to tell if what the media is portraying is realistic. Adults and children cannot be comparing their lives to millionaires.
